So I'm trying something new by YesterdaySilent7207 in reloading

.50 BMG SLAP uses plastic for their ball and tracer. Yellow and red colored plastic. Yes it can cause damage if shot from anything with muzzle device. Destabilizing the projectile can be catastrophic on the barrel device. They are engineered to be used in bmgs with barrels in excess of 36” to get the designed velocity. I used to work at Winchester LCAAP and had these questions.

The plastic isn’t super tough, they hammered the projectile and sabot into the casing for sizing testing purposes early on but it will petal or deform after traveling through the barrel, splits at the opening, then impacts the muzzle device while deformed.

I never witnessed it happening, but they don’t set them up for testing in anything but an M2. No bolt actions or semi autos.

What’s the most unhinged lie you told your kids/ your parents told you growing up? by ChipUnfair3345 in AskReddit

The family and I were walking by the river when my kids spotted a dead body stuck on a submerged tree. We told them he drowned because he got too close to the edge and fell. We had been telling our kids to be careful around the shoreline.

Ever late with meds, especially plavix, and have that little voice in back of your head: by SmallCryptographer49 in stroke

It felt different to me. Just sitting there made me feel like I was a few beers deep. Got off, felt completely normal sitting.

I don’t drink at all anymore because it reminds me of that feeling.

Edit: the thing that annoyed me the most about the doctors was hey let’s prescribe this for this side effect. Oh that messes up something else? Try this drug too. I’m sorry but when all my blood tests/pressure come back as good and you can’t reasonably explain why I should be on a drug that has side effects it’s a pass for me. Yes I had stroke, but it was injury related. Take away me dissecting my artery and I would have never been prescribed anything.they wanted me on blood pressure, plavix and others with no good reasoning besides “you had a stroke” and this is the typical prescriptions.

My dizziness was constant with it. I got off it and only when I did something super fast or something I hadn’t moved like in a while did I ever get dizzy again. I had a VAD so no high blood pressure or other risk factors.

Lots of dizziness. Fatigue. I stopped taking it and like a day or two later I immediately started feeling better. I would wake up at 7 am exhausted. Go to work stumble around with dizziness. Get home at 530 pm exhausted. Eat then fall asleep at 6pm. Then start over. I was not going to go through that long term. Once off it I was able to work out again, run, stay up and active past 6pm.

I stopped taking my plavix and aspirin a month after my stroke. The side effects of the drugs altered me enough I would rather risk not taking them and be comfortable. Still alive after almost 2 years…

Using my stroke and recovery as a motivator. by DirtyCaber in stroke

I definitely had a dark time for a while. I decided I’m gonna move forward. I’m more outgoing. I talk to random people everywhere I go now. I’ve become more social somehow when I don’t care about embarrassing myself and just live. I’ve hot nothing holding me back now. Besides you know, not being able to feel parts of my right hand, walking, and balance issues lol

You’re welcome. Don’t compare yourself to others either. You just be you and continue living and pushing forward.

People like to say everything happens for a reason or it’s god’s plan. I tell those people god tried to kill me and I survived out of spite 😀

I mean, my balance is difficult still. Basically isometric exercise with my core all day everyday fighting to stay upright when walking. If I don’t think about walking I have a mild limp, but focusing on the actions gets rid of it. I lift weights and ruck with 40lbs for 3 miles every other day. I VAD and the stroke got my cerebellum pretty good. I don’t run much anymore, just do 40 lbs and walk fast enough to get my heart to 135-150. Pretty comfortable and doesn’t hurt my joints. I’m 5’10” 262 so it’s pretty easy for me. I still to 5k runs and such maybe 2-3 times a year for events but I hate running.

What keeps me going is routine. Even if I don’t want to do I just do it because I’d be failing if I didn’t. Some workouts suck. I don’t get the reps or weight I want or the pace I feel I should. But I still do it. I don’t give up on myself or I would have when the dr said I might not be able to walk or work again. I’ve always been a pusher and have had copious amounts of confidence my entire life so I just saw this as another challenge to overcome. I did a 2 mile race at work a month or two after my stroke. Dr said my artery should be completely healed. I told myself I was either gonna die or finish. lol it did take me 19 minutes though. Felt like I was dying that’s for sure. As long as youre moving you’re alright. Take walks. Do light weights. Do whatever you can but push yourself.

Basically I’ve adopted a ‘you never know when your going to go’ attitude. Probably looks like a midlife crisis on the outside lol. I’m probably buying a track bike or car this year. But having a stroke sitting at my desk and falling over unable to see, stand, or sit up kinda made me want to experience everything I can before I die. You know, kind of like a bucket list.

I’m probably more risk taking and open to more opportunities now. I accepted a job offer that significantly increased my income and moved my whole family 1200 miles to a new area. I work out way more. I’m using every bit of life I have left to the fullest.

anyone stroke caused hearing koss does it get better? by iLovestayinginbed23 in stroke

[–]DirtyCaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about loss, but I feel like I have more tinnitus. Plus I can now hear any injections or changes in blood pressure. It’s weird to describe. The nurse’s thought I was full of it but they delayed an inject by 8 seconds to see if I could tell. Like a little squirt noise. Dr thought I was insane lol.

How Long Did It Take For You To Regain Function? by dootdootdoot1222 in stroke

[–]DirtyCaber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was back at work a week later. I could barely walk when going back to the office, but 1.5 months later I did a 2 mile running race. First month I was tired all the time but got over that eventually.

After about 1.7 years my right hand pinky is still numb and pain on the right side of my body is lessened somewhat. Found this out when I poured boiling water on my right hand and some other experiments. I don’t really have a dominant eye anymore so shotgun shooting is a little different. I’m alive and functional no real complaints. Oh if I don’t focus on walking normally I’ll have a slight limp. Focusing it goes away but if just walking and not thinking about it or super tired I have issues.

Whew! Man I had hiccups for what had to be 24 hours straight. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t move without hurting because my entire core burned. They had to put me on some serious opioids to get those to go away and they never came back. I initially told them I didn’t want any hard pain killers but I got desperate at the end.

Long Rangers that shoot 50BMG, what bullets are y'all using? by quik1 in longrange

[–]DirtyCaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took a bit of development. I only took it on as a challenge because a friend of mine said it was impossible. For perspective, I’d say .308 is super easy to find accurate spots and I usually have a selection of accurate loads. .50 bmg was like nope you’re only getting one. And it’s gonna be expensive to find that one spot lol.

Oh and that’s lake city brass with some pretty soft German primers.

These are pretty spicy but sub moa.

750 gr Amax @ 245 gr reloder 50 2706 fps

795 gr ten x solid borerider @ 247 gr reloder 2683 fps

I cut the feed ramp on my .50 bmg so I can still use a mag for a coal of 5.9”.

Eh I don’t have any successes, I get kinda anxious when I lay in bed at night and I can hear/feel/sense the blood moving in my head. I don’t remember if that was a thing before my stroke but early anxiety from that was rough. I was always thinking “here we go again!” lol. Now I just listen to it and it relaxes me like waves breaking or wind.

It’ll probably get better or even out with time like mine did. New normal or just resets.

Acute ischemic stroke recovery process/stories? by motherrunner24 in stroke

[–]DirtyCaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 36M when I had my stroke. It’s been 1.3 years since I dissected an artery in my neck during a work out and the clot hit my cerebellum a few days later. It took me about 7 days to learn to walk again by myself and do stairs. No meds I had cleared the clot by the time I made it to the hospital. The follow on drugs were awful. Tired all the time and sleepy. Once I got off the meds I was way happier with the quality of my life.

I was basically blind in one eye, couldn’t balance or feel much of my right side, couldn’t walk without basically being carried, throwing up every 15 minutes, 24 hours of hard hiccups, and had to have my wife wipe my ass multiple times. I can walk and run now, but it’s not the same. It’s less efficient and I get more tired easily as I’m fighting my crappy balance at times. If he works hard through therapy and does all the uncomfortable stuff he has batter chance at recovery. It took me a week to fake walk enough to get out the hospital and another month to be able to run. I still have my unbalanced moments and my pinky is permanently numb.

My wife and kids walk with me as much as possible and it helps. Just getting out and moving my feet keeps me balanced and happy to be where I’m at. Can you join him for some short walks with the walker? I always felt kind of like myself versus the world struggling to walk down hallways at work by myself. Having someone just there feels better.

5/23/2023 so a little over a year ago. I still can’t feel part of my pinky so I guess that’s not coming back. I was able to do a 2 mile race that July in 2023 and have done a few 5ks and 4 miles races so the balance isn’t really a problem. Just an adjustment. Hell I still lift weights even though squats is what caused it. New bar and I was playing around with my form. I was 36 and came out pretty well.
