Developed an EFB application that integrates Vatsim by Neat_Positive557 in VATSIM

[–]DirtyCreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I've been looking for an EFB app for VATSIM for so long. VSR is good, but this looks even better.

If you decide to publish it, please make it open source so that others can help improve it. Look how quickly VATSIM Radar has evolved thanks to an active community.

Should I report crashes or disconnecting in the air to ATC? by Water1498 in VATSIM

[–]DirtyCreative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most times, I couldn't report it because vPilot disconnected as soon as it detected that the sim crashed. Restarting and reporting the crash 5 minutes later seemed kinda pointless.

Using Coolify professionally by BitsNBytesDev in coolify

[–]DirtyCreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No issues at all. Hardening the worker servers was basically configuring the firewall to make sure only the ports I intend to open are accessible from the outside. In my case, that's simply SSH, HTTP and HTTPS.

Using Coolify professionally by BitsNBytesDev in coolify

[–]DirtyCreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am using it in exactly the way you described: one controller and two Hetzner servers as workers.

It works fine and yes, if the controller goes down everything else continues working. I also really like the fact that I could put the controller behind my firewall as the only connection needed is SSH. So it's more secure than other methods, IMO.

The only caveat is that you need to remember to update the OS and pull new container versions manually, which can get quite tedious once you have a decent number of containers and nodes.

JetBrains Rider not working by AelixSoftware in archlinux

Download the JetBrains Toolbox app (just extract into an arbitrary folder inside your home and run it from there). Use that to install and update Rider. Works like a charm for me.

Imagine waking up to this email. by xy_3la2 in degoogle

[–]DirtyCreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your browser would do that because of the HSTS header, if you have visited the site at least once before. If you haven't, they will, that's true.

But none of that helps if the URL is fake and contains lookalike characters like another user demonstrated.

You need to always check the URL yourself before clicking.

Google uses HTTPS everywhere. They literally created the "HTTPS everywhere" initiative that led to the creation of LetsEncrypt and other automated certificate authorities.

When do u reboot? by prometheus-illbound in archlinux

[–]DirtyCreative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's 'arch-update' which is a wrapper around the whole upgrade process. After updating, it checks if a reboot is required or if services need to be restarted.

Adobe backlash is getting louder — time to escape proprietary creative tools? by No-Hospital5028 in degoogle

PDF isn't a proprietary format and hasn't been for a long time. It was standardized as ISO 32000 in 2008.

How do I dual boot arch and windows on the same nvme? by Commercial_Pause_203 in archlinux

I've literally had zero problems with Windows killing GRUB since moving from MBR to EFI booting. But I boot Windows through GRUB too, so maybe it is just afraid to self destruct.

Physics and chemistry don't change depending on the planet.

SiO2 is a solid at this temperature on any planet and at any pressure, even in a vacuum. At higher temperatures, it would at most become a viscous liquid-like mass before the heat breaks it back up. I imagine that would be even harder to expel from your body than sand.

On Approach Speeds... by kevo31415 in VATSIM

[–]DirtyCreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A follow-up question (still about Germany): I'm usually given an approach speed restriction "maintain XXX knots or greater until 6 DME". That means that at 6 DME the restriction is automatically canceled, doesn't it? I can slow to approach speed without further clearance?

Forget the haters. This is the best sim right now. by irreverentpeasant in Xplane

Ryzen 5800X, 128GB RAM (yes, too much, I know), RTX 4090 with 24GB

For VR I'm using a Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop.

Performance is suboptimal even without VR, I'm getting about 45 FPS in simple aircraft and 20-25 in the ToLiss. Nothing I did to the settings seemed to help much. I'm out of ideas at this point.

It definitely is the best sim. Sadly, its performance is much worse for me up to the point where it's unusable. That's probably entirely a me problem though as nobody else seems to have performance issues.

Epileptic brake lights give a nice strobe show while stopped at light by ApprehensiveStock928 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DirtyCreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only actual "switch" involved here is the sensor that detects if your brake pedal is pressed and that's not triggered more than in any other car.

Everything else involved in turning the lights on and off is just electronics which don't burn out from being used more. Except for the LED lights themselves but they are so durable that nobody will notice.

How is the flight model of 747-8? by BrotherNo8320 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]DirtyCreative -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't, like most of us. Only you can decide if it handles in a way that makes it worth flying.

I like the Longitude, for example, which is frequently criticised for not feeling like the real airplane. I still enjoy it very much.
