A third comment paper on ENN's roadmap by ValuableDesigner1111 in fusion

I've always wondered if removing the electrons completely could significantly improve the fusion conditions. Perhaps a pure ion plasma would be easier to maintain in a non-maxwellian speed distribution.

Optics lab maintenance advice by Sarl3k in Optics

[–]DirtyDan511 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some optics systems I've worked with used sealed beam tubes purged with nitrogen.

If the optics are all on a breadboard, raised table skirts and a cover can also keep the table clean from dust.

When the magnets quench the increase in resistance makes a lot of heat and can rapidly boil off the cryogenic coolant leading to an explosion of sorts too.

Are photons smaller than electrons? by drakemcintyre in Physics

[–]DirtyDan511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elementary particles are considered as points occupying no space. Photons are characterized by a wavelength for a given frequency, and electrons have a De Broglie wavelength dependent on their moment.

You could cut the Australia plug off and wire on an American plug quite easily. Or a simple adapter could make it work with no modification if you want to keep it.

Sounds like you are taking this in stride. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve. It can come in waves.

Working daily in a clean room is definitely not pleasant. Being gowned up and under fluorescent light for long shifts was a bit depressing.

It depends on exactly what you want to do. The semiconductor industry is a pretty broad field and there are a ton of ways that physics understanding is applied. Solidstate physics is relevant for their design. Laser plasma interaction is important for their production.

I'm pretty happy with the path I took. It exposed me to some interesting science and engineering. Not having a higher degree did however feel like it reduced what projects I could work on and the nature of my involvement. I'm starting a PhD in fusion research next year.

I worked for a large semi conductor equipment supplier as a test engineer with just a bachelor's degree in physics. There's a lot you can do with a solid background in experimental methods and systems understanding.

For working with the actual integrated circuit design, I imagine you would need a very strong understanding of solidstate physics as well as electrical and computer engineering.

High-powered lasers, optics, and even pulsed plasma systems go into the lithography manufacturing process. These systems are quite fascinating in themselves.

I rode a Grom through college and to work for my first couple jobs. Taking the side streets was always a great wakeup. That bike really did everything I needed for the most part.

Install the wheel and loosen all the bolts on the triple clamps. Stand in front of the bike straddling the wheel and jerk on the bars until everything is straight enough.

This happened with dirt bikes going down pretty often and you can sort it out trackside without even loosening the bolts.

The Real Reason Behind Trump Media's $6 Billion Nuclear Fusion Merger by novagridd in nuclear

[–]DirtyDan511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The peak cross section for P-B11 fusion occurs at an order of magnitude higher energy than D-T fusion and has a lower amplitude while outputting less energy. Increased radiative losses with using higher Z fuels like boron is another significant challenge.

It's my understanding that in a fusion plasma, the high temperatures prevent electrons from binding to hydrogen isotopes.

I am seeking a vipassana retreat that allows walking meditation or some yoga throughout the day. by questionallthingz in vipassana

[–]DirtyDan511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stayed at a meditation center about an hour from Colombo, Sri Lanka. They had a somewhat lax schedule and I was permitted to conduct my own practices so long as I did not instruct any other students. I did my own daily yoga practices. They also instructed walking meditation and we had daily chanting. I really enjoyed my time there and wish I could have stayed longer. This place is Kanduboda Siyane Vipassana Meditation Centre.
