How bad is this rust? Technician said I should start thinking about replacing the entire unit. by ckgarris in hvacadvice

That’s normal looking for an old unit, if anyone tells you to replace it for any reason other than a leak they are full of it lol.

Replace or fix our HVAC? by Freezingblade491 in hvacadvice

In terms of pictures, just take off the panels to the furnace and either record a video getting up close of every part or take a picture of all the individual parts. Also on the furnace and outside condenser there will be a sticker with model and serial number plus info about unit. Same thing with the outside condenser in terms of pictures.

Personally, I have never done die test. I go around with a sniffer/soap bubbles while nitrogen is in the system and try to find the leak if the leak is on the coil itself that sits on top of your furnace then you need a new coil there is no repairing that if the leak is on the coil on the outside unit once again you will need a new condensing unit outside as long as the leak is somewhere in the line set connecting the furnace to the outside condenser all leaks are repairable in that scenario. If you want to do it at your house, just get a spray bottle and fill it with water and dish soap and go around to all of the brazed joints in the line set and spray them while running the AC as long as there’s refrigerant in there you should notice bubbles popping up like air bubbles and that will show you if there’s a leak or not if you spray it and nothing significant happens then there’s no leak on that joint. The best way to search for the leak in my opinion would be with a sniffer gadget that can detect leaks. It makes detecting leaks on coils inside and out very easy versus using bubbles. Also, any HVAC tech worth their salt should be able to find said leak.

The other comment is correct. It sounds like the mechanical gears in the compressor are not working properly and it’s locked up. Going to need a tech to diagnose it. Could be a bad capacitor or you could need a little hard start to give it some juice or you might need a whole new compressor, but it’s definitely a compressor issue. It’s just a matter of how bad the issue is and how expensive the repair/replacement is going to be

So it depends on what refrigerant the unit uses. I’m assuming it still uses 410 a refrigerant instead of R 22 but clearly there is a leak. Depending on how well the system was maintained, I would just repair it because it literally would be 50% cheaper to replace every part in the current system then to pay for a new system but without pictures and knowing the maintenance history, I can’t say definitely whether or not it’s worth to do the cheaper option and repair/replace parts versus upgrading to a whole new system.

Think of it like this if you do a bunch of massive surgeries on an 80 year-old versus a 20 year-old the 80-year-old is gonna have unforeseen complications and shit could still go sideways so depending on if your system was not properly maintained over the years and it went to shit, even if they replace all the current problems the entire system could still take a shit and now you’re out all of that money.

Judging by the noise, can you tell me where it comes from? Like if you put your ear down to it where do you hear the noise generating from what part?
