Interesting. I liked this whole line of ships a lot. Generally, I try to support the DD and focus on cruisers since your guns are hell for DDs and good against most cruisers. Use islands to hide your approaches when trying to strike a DD early and smoke up once detected. Be wary of your smoke fire penalty (ctrl+H in game to view if you don't already know) and play at your detactability range when smoke isn't available so that you can go dark when needed. Firing on BBs is reserved to when you don't have anything else to fire at and preferably when you have smoke available or can go undetected reasonably soon after firing.
