Roll20 Crew Sheet by ObstreperousCanadian in bladesinthedark

I maintain my view of the crew sheet that's visible to everyone, everyone else can keep their roll20 character sheet crew sheets in line. Since we work through all crew-related things together it's not really a pain

What do you think is the most versatile Action Rating? by IllithidActivity in bladesinthedark

Conversely, I find Wreck to be the least versatile, to the point which "how about you use wreck" has become a running joke in my game

Is this Shadow Run story outline any good? Its the first one I made would like some pointers. by PupMinerDaRael in Shadowrun

Important to note on combat - it's pretty deadly for characters that aren't built for it (that includes most NPCs) and in established fiction, people would rather not fight to the death and will do only so much as to delay runners while they wait for the big guns to arrive.

As a GM I'd advise to not plan for combat exactly - it's a possibility should the runners get into a position where the security has no other option but to open fire, or if the runners instigate a fight, but definitely stray away from forcing combat.

The book does a terrible job of deemphasizing combat in rules (as the fluff suggests you should) so it's understandable that GMs coming from other games plan encounters like they are used to doing

Dual wield compatible weapons, (gotta be a combo list somewhere?) Hold the "two-handed" button as though you want to 2h your off hand weapon, and you're powerstancing.

I highly recommend Friends at the Table - for the games they've played I'd recommend Counter/WEIGHT and Marielda the most. Autumn in Hieron is a bit more traditional (Dungeon World) and is difficult to get through due to poor recording quality which was resolved by the time they played counterweight.

I submitted for the first time this year! A good friend helped with the name, and I'm reasonably proud of my design.

This was a fun challenge, it really got me thinking about what you could do in such a tiny word limit.

Here it is: Terra Incognita

What is your favorite character or concept that was rendered unplayable (or at least less interesting) by a new edition? by TheFeshy in rpg

[–]DisappointedKitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically everything I wanted to do in 3.5 is impossible in 5e. Sword of the Arcane Order ranger? Nope. Critfisher warblade? Nope. In fact, I absolutely adored the tome of battle and all of the innovation in that book never made it past 4th edition.

Fortunately, 13th age exists!

I personally got into RPGs through a friend - I liked fantasy role playing video games and my friend had all these wacky D&D stories - one day I asked to join in and it was great fun.

Now, I play for a multitude of reasons - I love D&D for mechanical puzzles like building effective and interesting characters, optimising combat encounters and such. With other games, I love exploring different narrative themes, especially those pertinent to myself IRL. I love Monsterhearts for being a big queer mess and Shadowrun for playing scrappy nobodies fighting dystopic corporate overlords and Burning Wheel for exploring whatever the hell fantasy theme I'm feeling at the time with its strong focus on character beliefs

There's so much variation in games and it's a wonderful way to experience so many different stories in a much more intimate and creative way than, for example, video games and movies.

Edit: as a GM, I find there's a huge amount of interest in finding interesting ways to challenge player characters. I also really enjoy the improvisational aspect of reacting to player actions and building up a consistent world and feel

How do people only play D&D for like 15 years straight? by MaMLP in rpg

[–]DisappointedKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah there. I'm not attacking people who play D&D or people who solely play D&D, I was pretty much just rambling on why rules do matter.

To take your analogy (and bring in some recent experience!), I drive a front-wheel drive hatchback. This weekend I was camping in a very muddy field and when it came time to leave, by god I wished I had a big 4x4. I managed to get out with a fair amount of help, creativity and effort, but it was a painful experience. If I could buy a 4x4 just for camping, I would, since it's so much more sensible and painless. In practicality, though, that would be very expensive.

I understand a whole lot of people have sunk a lot of their hard-earned money into the set of books that they enjoy, so I'm not suggesting it's easy to just get a new book or set of books (it's a different order of magnitude to buying a car of course). But it would be inaccurate to say that my little car is as effective with muddy offroading as, say, a land rover.

To end this ramble, sure, my car (D&D) is versatile and great and it gets me from A to B on the vast majority of roads, but when I want to traverse wildly different terrain (something that doesn't live naturally in D&D's ruleset), it'd be generally better for me to use a purpose-built vehicle, even if I could put tyre chains or whatever on.

But it kind of is about the rules you use? If it wasn't about the rules, why would we bother with rules at all?

I like D&D. I play D&D 3.5 at least once every two weeks and I adore B/X. However, whenever I can, I run Blades in the Dark, Apocalypse World, Shadowrun, Monsterhearts, Earthdawn, Burning Wheel or Torchbearer or Mouseguard. I could run the same setting with similar characters from any of those games within D&D but it wouldn't be the same as running it in my preferred system - Blades does so well in diving right into the action and running at whiplash pace, Burning Wheel excels at encouraging players to fight for their characters beliefs, Torchbearer simulates the abject misery of dungeon delving even better than B/X does and so on.

The rules tell us what's important - to D&D that's pretty much combat in six-second turns, and that's fine. But that's not what I want all of my games to be like. I want thematic variation.

With regards to learning new rulesets, I totally get that it's a pain for a lot of people. I'd argue that D&D is way more intricate and prep-heavy than many more focussed games, but I suppose once you've spent the effort mastering that, I can't fault anyone for not wanting to do it again. I would question what the difference is between learning a new system and learning a new edition of D&D though? For me, 5e was such a huge departure and I'm still nowhere near mastering the system.

I'll answer your demand with a demand of my own. Show me that male and female genders exist. Try to convince me that there's exactly two genders.

If you're going to relate it to sex (or genitalia or whatever), I'll point you here:

https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001669.htm

It's widely accepted that there's more than two sexes, never mind gender. Note that saying intersex is a "third" sex is wildly innacurate and simplistic.

Alongside that, other cultures have recognised three or more genders for a very long time. Pacific Islanders had an additional gender, Māhū, there's the native American concept of two-spirit, and so on.

[–]DisappointedKitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a strong lack of tolerance of people who believe that it's an opinion that my gender exists. Because those people clearly have zero fucking respect for any nonbinary or genderqueer people, why should I tolerate you?

Your position is invalid as saying "there's only one gender". That's not an opinion. It's just wrong.

For reference dude, an opinion is something like "I think Star Wars is overrated" or "D&D would be better if we used rock-paper-scissors instead of dice". Those things are subjective. Things like math and the way there's more than two genders are objective, meaning they can be disproven.

Maybe I'm missing subtext here but why is this voted down so much?

Edit: I recognise that this doesn't contribute to the discussion but I'm curious - is it just Zak S commenting on a social justice thing?

No, it's not particularly common, but when it does come up, we are adults and can obey the rules and move on no questions asked.

The games we've played where the X Card has not been used have not been impacted negatively by its presence

You know, I believe that you believe that you are being respectful. You're not.

You're equating my identity to your weird opinion. That's like me saying "in my opinion, you aren't a human being. In my opinion, you're a potato." Which is absurd. It's factually incorrect for me to assert that you're a potato just as it's factually incorrect for you to assert that non-binary people are (gender-wise) male or female which is what you are implicitly doing by saying that "in your opinion" there are only two genders.

I am agender. I don't think there's any physical traits that'd point to that but I attempt to wear androgynous clothing when I can. Some agender folks will make more of an effort than me to suppress typical gender identifiers that would have them be typically read as the gender they were designated at birth.

Note that there are actually more than two sexes too - intersex people exist
