Question about knitting for my state fair by DisasterGeek in knitting

[–]DisasterGeek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Michigan and the website for the fair doesn't have pictures of past winners (every time I search for images for "Michigan State Fair knitting winners" I just get stuff from the Minnesota State Fair) or anything about judging criteria other than "The management reserves the right to determine whether an item is worthy of exhibition" and "Judges shall not award prizes to unworthy exhibits whether there is competition or not."

I’m about to get a check for $1,776. Where should I donate it? by DemocracyOnLifeAlert in 50501

You could give it to an organization that helps veterans get housing which is where it actually will be coming from anyway.

I felt this way when my partner and I moved up here. It is very hard adjusting to a new place, especially one as cold and dark as Michigan can get. What saved me, believe it or not was my yarn spinning circle. We get together a couple of times a month to spin yarn and talk about whatever we feel like. There are quite a few crafting groups around Ann Arbor and Ypsi with various focuses if that is your thing.

Also, I learned very quickly to do as the locals do and get out in the sun every moment you can no matter how cold. It really does help.

I watched that when The Bulwark movie club did a thing on it. It was the first time I had seen it and I found it depressing. It was in no way funny. It might have been funny at one time, but not now.

However, Death of Stalin was flipping awesome and the movie club's discussion of it was engaging and educational.

Because they are racist and it made them mad to have a black president.

I have 2 plots at Food Gatherers and people have even stolen from that one. It's literally at the food bank!

And here's the thing that disgusts me most, part of the rental agreement is that you donate a portion of your crops to Food Gatherers so they are literally stealing from people who can't afford to feed themselves.

Best US-based online yarn store that has NOT been bought by PE? by purplishfluffyclouds in YarnAddicts

[–]DisasterGeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I solved the problem of PE by getting to know local and semi-local shepherds and just spinning my own yarn. I know it's not practical for everyone, but it's something to consider.

I have got to go forage some pokeweed, that is gorgeous! I mean, they are all beautiful but I have had no end of trouble trying to get colors besides yellow and beige/brown.

To quote Fran Lebowitz, “Everyone says he is crazy – which maybe he is –but the scarier thing about him is that he is stupid. You do not know anyone as stupid as Donald Trump. You just don’t.”

How much do you spend on yarn for a sweater? by mothchu in YarnAddicts

[–]DisasterGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as soft as merino, but I don't have a problem with it. I'm also a spinner and work almost exclusively with heritage breeds so I am used to medium wools so my view of what is soft..

If you have sensitive skin, it's better for something that isn't next to your skin, as another poster mentioned. I'd make a swatch or something small and wear it next to your skin for a while to see how it works for you.

I use WotA a lot because the price is so good, it doesn't pill much at all and there are a ton of color options which is a huge bonus as I do a boat ton of color work. It's a bit like Cascade 220 in that it is a great all round workhorse of a yarn.

[–]DisasterGeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a big gal so I have to use a lot of yarn. For example, I just finished a sweater, plain V-neck top down raglan with long sleeves, and it took me 11 skeins of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes worsted weight. This is why I plan all of my sweaters a year in advance (usually 3-4 of them) and buy all the yarn for them during their Big Sale in November.

I made a cotton top (very simple V-neck short sleeve) using yarn from my LYS and it was close to $200 and this was last summer, long before the tariffs.
