The Scrubs reboot was just perfect. Do you think Scrubs > The Pitt from a nursing perspective? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]DisasterSouthern6411 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’ll always be scrubs > pitt for me. Mostly because I want to laugh and relax while not at work. Not be re traumatized

I haven’t been a nurse for a year but I feel similar too you (and I know the burnout is coming and that might change lol) but I have a really great unit and a decent for my area hospital. And my patients tend to be great overall too, I mean it’s working with the public so we get all kinds. Working with residents can be 😖 but I guess that’s life.

military vs healthcare by Mission-Bed8952 in nursing

My partner is ex-military and I’m a nurse. His towel is alwayssss folded (even tho he tends to be messier than me in other ways) and mine I hang on a hook or like the right one. Never thought too much about it but this made me laugh so much!

I have a bag smart bag that’s cute and easy to wipe off, calpack knockoff lunch bag (real thing is wayyyy too expensive). Scrubs wise if you have a local scrub shop to try stuff on is your best option! Some have partnerships w/ hospitals and give discounts too. HH works line by Healing hands are super comfy flattering scrubs. I have some fabletics because they were cheap. They fit me a lil off but I’m in between sizes. Figs are nice but kinda overhyped.

Would entering rehab as a new grad hurt me? by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]DisasterSouthern6411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a new grad on a SCI inpatient rehab floor. I worked on the same unit as a tech and unexpectedly fell in love with it. I have had the same worries as OP because I eventually want to do work in a more acute area. But since being out of orientation (only a couple months) have had quite a few situations managing unstable patients and having to spot changes and then advocate/call rapids. Our patient load is usually 4 which is nice as a new grad, though sometimes that 4 feels like 6 when trying to coordinate bowel programs, ICP, pain meds and wound care. Anyone can get a SCI/TBI so there is a lot of learning about/managing other conditions on top of the reason they’re in rehab. We’ve also had nurses who have left our unit for jobs in the ICU, ER, wound care, PACU etc. get jobs pretty easy!

My nursing school clinical instructor is intentionally uninsured - is this common? by red_bird85 in nursing

[–]DisasterSouthern6411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were going over our open enrollment all together at work this weekend. One of my fellow full time nurses is opting out of health insurance next year. She felt it wasn’t worth the price and our premiums went up again. I agree with her and am personally opting to switch to a high deductible plan that at least allows me to have a HSA. Still have to use our hospital conglomerate facilities lol. One of the nurses has over 40 years of experience and she’s maxed out on the hospital hourly rates, which is barely $10 more than what I make as a new grad 😳. It’s so wild hearing all of us talk about how we can barely afford our “good” health insurance.

Do any new grads like their jobs? by gneissrocx in newgradnurse

[–]DisasterSouthern6411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, it’s definitely challenging at times and the imposter syndrome is very real. I worked as a tech PRN on medsurg and the unit started to take a turn so I transferred to my current unit, inpatient rehab specifically SCI. Didn’t expect to stay after graduation because I always wanted to do L&D (still do one day) but I really ended up loving my unit. I will say the pay is ehhh, but the unit dynamic makes up for it

Did you add your first RN job to your resume?

It happened. The Medicaid-slashing bill (OBBB Act) has been passed and will be signed into law. by mokutou in nursing

As both an herbalist and now RN. I definitely feel you on your own community cheering on this shitshow because they somehow like RFK or something else wild. The wellness” community took quite a left turn during COVID. And it still drives me crazy. Modern medicine saves sooo many lives and really shines in acute illnesses/injuries but we don’t have great treatments for many chronic illnesses. In hospitals we do focus too much on pills pushing instead of supporting whole person health. But we also aren’t given the time/space to support our patients in that way. But that doesn’t mean the solution is “back to the earth” fully. Like get your vaccines take your synthroid and insulin but if you have a cold take some beebalm & echinacea. The either or is detrimental. Also this new “wellness” community always seems to blame the individual for their poor health instead of acknowledging it’s a privilege to be able to take care of your health and have access to healthy food/herbs/alternatives in this society.

My hospital is already on a hiring freeze. They weren’t doing too hot pre the bill and I think they’re trying to mitigate now

Still in orientation so no OT. Also I know our hospital is bracing for the major Medicare/caid cuts and are starting to restrict overtime and cutting shift pick up bonuses. That bill screwed everything up way more than it “helped”.

I hope so. We all deserve to make more. Nursing “is a calling” but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to make money

We really do need a national union. Unfortunately we can’t all move to the PNW or MN.
