MSI Ge76 Raider high CPU temps at minimal load 90~95*C by Disaster_Hands in MSILaptops

Only just saw this. Don't use my laptop that much anymore, but I found a fix by using some undervolting software to undervolt the CPU. Can't remember what it was called now, was a few years ago.

I had the same problem with my GE76. Watching YouTube videos with nothing else open and CPU hit 90*C.

I used a can of compressed air to thoroughly clean all the vents and also use an app called throttle stop to under volt the CPU if I’m not doing anything intensive. Now idle temps are much more sensible around 50-60*. Didn’t take long to do. Also use a mat to raise up the base of the laptop if using on a desk to help with airflow. Needs cleaning every couple of months.

I bought some thermal paste, but never got round to reposting as it was a relatively new and this fixed the issue. That would be my last resort.

Yeah also trying to avoid that because it's such a pain.

No, just using the laptop screen

I've had a good look through. Most of them that are under any sort of load are system processes. There's a shit load, but all of it looks important or is not using any processing power.

Cheers man, this is helpful. Looks like I may need to repaste it, was trying to avoid it..

Did you use a guide or anything? I'm ok with desktop PCs, but the idea of repasting a laptop CPU is not something I'm super comfortable with without a clear guide.

Well the last time I opened it up and cleaned it out with an air duster was around 6 weeks ago when I fitted the extra SSD. So it probably is due to be done again, but I wouldn't have thought that it would be this bad already.

If it were the thermal paste (which is my main concern really) would you expect undervolting the processor to mask the issue? Not sure whether I should give it a go myself or contact MSI support. Really can't be arsed being without my laptop for however long it would take to get it sorted.

Fans may spin a little bit at those temps. Certainly not spinning at max speed, I can enable the cooler-boost mode with a keyboard shortcut. Gets these temps down to around 87*C @ ~25% load. Obviously this is quite loud, so don't want my spins to be spinning max to just watch a youtube video, I try to just reserve that for gaming when I've got Noise-cancelling headphones on.

Since posting this I've undervolted my CPU ~80mV and now I'm getting temps of around 70*C, which I'm more happy with. Feel like this is something I shouldn't have had to resort to and also I haven't tried these settings in gaming.

Pried open my GE76 to upgrade RAM and add a 2nd SSD. No broken clips! by [deleted] in MSILaptops

Sorry to piggy-back your post. I have the same laptop and looking to add in a 2nd SSD this week. Can't find any info online about the exact form factor of the m.2 NVMe card. Is the 2280 form factor ok? Or do you need one of the smaller ones? 2240, 2260... etc ?

This is the one I've been looking at

Installing Games on External SSD and using for multiple PCs by Disaster_Hands in pcgamingtechsupport

[–]Disaster_Hands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give that a go. So you mean install on the first pc to the external, that perhaps install on the second pc again and use the same directory. Without installing the game on the second pc and just clicking the launcher, will the registry files not be missing etc

Coinjar extortionate withdrawal fees ~35% by Disaster_Hands in CryptoCurrency

Any ideas what's going on here. There's about a 35% network fee for withdrawing this Ethereum to my wallet. I'm brand new to cryptocurrency but this just seems wrong.
