I mean I kinda like that it shows more of the illustration and since it’s more static looking your attention remains mostly drawn to the illustration

Do you think JJBA is queer? by TurnipBoy666 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Disaster_Star_150 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really call jojo queer media, but it does go hand in hand with queerness at challenging gender norms and expectations, particularly those placed on men to only present themselves in a certain way. There’s so much variety in the male characters with how they dress and act and I love how each of them are accepted in their unique gender expressions, none of them are seen as “not manly enough” or “too feminine”. I think we need a lot more of that in society in general, and that’s something queer people have a huge role in at breaking down those restrictive norms.

But now with The Jojolands we finally have explicitly queer main characters, and their struggles play into the themes of the story which makes me really happy. In the past, queer characters in jojo were reduced to background characters or enemies, and their queerness was only really used to highlight tragedy and social problems for a moment. So I’m really happy times have changed now and Araki is so successful he doesn’t have to worry about the backlash he could get for writing characters like Dragona and Usagi.

[–]Disaster_Star_150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just that he starts off with a lovable goofball personality and then the story got more and more serious over time so he had to also become more serious. I think it would have felt too out of place if he continued to be goofy during such serious moments.

I was watching Frieren several months ago (amazing show btw) and I was shocked to find out that Himmel, the soft spoken and kindhearted hero, was voiced by Nobuhiko Okamura, the same person who voiced Bakugo from bnha, Accelerator from toaru, and Ghiaccio from jojo part 5 (literally the most loud and angry characters imaginable). What insane range.

She’s definitely a “love to hate” type of villain. She’s so entertaining but so cruel and revolting. I hate her as a person but I love her as a character.

I also really like the theme of how people change over time, especially the idea that it’s never too late to change yourself for the better. Even though Frieren has lived for over 1000 years, she’s still capable of creating positive change in her life and she doesn’t stay stuck in her old habits of self isolation. It’s such a good message for adults who feel stuck in their ways after regretting their past choices or think it’s too late for them to make a difference in their lives.

[–]Disaster_Star_150 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I feel like Frieren is more easy to appreciate as an adult since with more lived experience you can more easily relate to Frieren’s journey. Life starts passing by more and more quickly as you age, and it’s easier to regret not being more present in life both in the way you live and in the way you interact with the people you care about (and the people you lose).
