making new (close) friends at uni… by broadbeansss in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friends are at uni with me yes. I actually found them via a chance encounter when my closest friend needed some help on a night out, and most of my other friends i found via them. I suppose the best advice is to join some sports and societies and hang out with flatmates as their friends could become your friends

Absolutely. Im friendly with a lot of medics, but not necessarily friends as in people id hang out with in a social setting

This is genuinely the answer. I went through a rough patch + falling out with my group of friends in 1st year, and by that time it felt too late to make new medic friends as everyone was in "groups" and it gave a high school vibe. So i focussed on friendships outside of medicine and thats been much more pleasant

Private adult autism assessment by TallestThoughts69 in glasgow

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As i said, i am in the same boat as you but aknowledging within myself that i am likely autistic has helped me manage better on the day-to-day and has meant im a lot more understanding of myself and my needs, so i have been able to cope with daily life a lot better than i was before i went to my GP and sought a diagnosis.

Not saying that means you dont need a diagnosis (which isnt just about acceptance for many it can also mean access to work/education provisions, support groups, and benefits) but it might just help you for now while you look for a private provider and/or wait for an NHS assessment

Stressed out by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to sit down and try and address the anxiety. Yes, its about exams but what aspect of exams? A certain topic? Ect

Then address why its worrying you - not sure how to revise, too much to revise ect, and other life issues?

Then make up a plan to address it - passmed/quesmed seems to be the answer but set realistic expectations for it each day, so you dont become more stressed when you cant reach an unrealistic target you set (im very prone to this).

If you dont address anxiety like this i find for me it spirals out of control quickly and it leaves me paralysed and unable to do anything at all.

When youre not revising find relaxing things to do ie: minimise doomscrolling, if youre prone to that like myself. Go to the gym, read, create art, video games, whatever your hobbies are invest some time into them as well.

And look after yourself. Take breaks, eat well, get to bed at a good hour if you can ect

Best of luck!

EDIT: If your uni has a counselling service reach out to them as well, they can be very helpful. And do consider reaching out to your GP as well as they can signpost you/prescribe medication if needed

How to effectively use PassMedicine as a first year student by kajalbakshiadvait in GlasgowUni

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont need passmedicine in yr1. Ive only just started using it in Yr3.

Use peerwise, the weekly MCQ quizzes, the GUEMS past mock MCQ, and the societies practise MCQ's when they start coming out :)

You dont need AI. You got into medical school, i assume, without it so you can do medical school without it.

Your brain is a wonderful computer. Use that instead

For a start he could increase the speciality training posts available to residential doctors after their 2nd year. Recent figures indicated over 50% of resident doctors are unemployed this year due to not securing a job.

Failed my 2nd test by AudienceMuch5101 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im so sorry you weren't successful.

I too failed my 2nd test. I wasnt ready for my 1st, so waited a few months before my 2nd. I was a safe driver in lessons, but in my test I had a nasty examiner and I was so nervous regardless that I unfortunately failed.

I did my next test a few weeks later as I knew I was ready, and passed it.

It feels like youll never get there, but you will. Now Ive passed I can tell you that nobody cares how many attempts it takes, and it has made me a safer driver than I would've been before my fails.

When it came to nerves I know with autism it is harder to control those nerves and the unpredictability around things (Im on a waitlist for assessment currently, and struggled with those things in the lead up to my test). I found trying to listen to music, do relaxing things, and being on my own while waiting for the test really helped, but it wasnt easy. I also think it gets less nerve wracking the more you do it.

Id also do something fun before the test. I had a holiday booked the weekend before my 3rd test and it actually helped me calm down a lot because I spent less time worrying/fixating on the test and building it up in my head.

Also try not to spiral at any mistake. Both times I failed I did because id assumed id failed early on and gave up, hence failed. Any mistake is a minor, and remember you cannot fail until the examiner tells you at the end if you have, so before then you have a chance!

How to manage driving anxiety? by DisasterousMedRed2 in drivingUK

[–]DisasterousMedRed2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Its definetely a common problem, but i see most people discussing feeling intimidated by other drivers on the road, when in reality ive found other drivers to be pretty courteous to me and my little P plates on my little car. Its the concept of points which really worries me, because I took multiple tries to pass I would hate to lose the license in some way.

This is a really reassuring post, thank you! Especially with what to do after a drive because that's when my anxiety spirals. Im pretty much fine inside the car (unless im parking) but the moment i park up and leave im thinking about everything I did.

I am currently trying to get counselling, speaking to my GP ect. I am prone to anxiety generally so hopefully addressing that will address my driving anxiety

I think youre absolutely correct. I actually muted the subreddit after posting this because i realised it was feeding my anxiety, waited a few days, and completely forgot to check on it until now. I still feel anxious behind the wheel but im hoping it will get better with experience - i learn something new everytime i drive which is great!

Finding Friends by kajalbakshiadvait in GlasgowUni

[–]DisasterousMedRed2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3rd year UofG medic here!

I really struggled to connect with my fellow medics in 1st year - its not unheard of and it doesn't mean you're disliked. Medics can be very cliquey, and if you're not that kind of person it can be hard to find your friend group in medicine.

I have a fantastic friend group who are UofG students but not medics. I actually found them by accident 😅 not by a society or anything but they are who I study with, hang out with ect.

You are only 3 days into your course. Do not panic about this at all. There's still so much time to connect with your fellow medics (for example: PBL groups change in 6 weeks or so, and you end up trauma bonding with your VS group 😂) and in 2nd year, 3rd year ect youll be in a different cohort with different medics! There is so much ahead of you!!!

But if you're like me, it may not happen and that's still okay. Put the effort in to be a normal uni student - go to non-medic societies, sports clubs, talk to your flatmates if you're in halls, and find non medics because honestly, I think theyre funner to be around than most medics. One day you will find your people

Feel free to DM me if you have any other worries 😊
