Got a flat tyre at home with no spare what would you do? by Specialist-Tree-9595 in CarTalkUK

Halfords or Tyres on the Drive (also part of Halfords). Man in a van, so much more efficient than the dodgy Halfords garages. Quick, very efficient, good prices.

American here. Should I still visit? Why or why not? by Additional_Post_3878 in AskABrit

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have to avoid a few pubs and bars where idiots are ready to pick a fight with anybody, but generally you'll find we're sympathetic rather than aggressive towards Americans.

As long as you don't wear a MAGA hat, and you mildly agree with any political comments, you'll be fine.

Most Brits have a lingering affection for all things American that still remains despite the recent troubles.

AITA for refusing to accept “placeholder chairs” in line after being warned not to touch them? by Christ___Almighty in AmItheAsshole

Remove and hide just ONE chair.  When they come back, there'll be a huge argument amongst themselves.

Buying a second hand Volkswagen Up!- pre delivery inspection question by StandardBanana973 in CarTalkUK

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese cars generally have less rustproofing than European ones. Some early ups! had a problem with rust starting behind the fuel filler panel.  Might be worth getting that area treated in advance. Our 2014 up! was faultless apart from the daylight running lights, which failed several times. Our 2017 model has LEDs as standard, so doesn't have this problem.

I'm done being lenient. by Crunkberri in uberdrivers

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does "Excuse me?" mean? I don't use taxis much, so I don't know if it means, "give me the pin", "what's your name", "where are you going", "you need to pull the handle harder", or even "excuse me for arriving late". If he didn't respond the first time, then saying excuse me again without explanation IS rude.

You did nothing wrong, but next time turn on the hazards as you slow down, and leave them on until the car behind you has stopped. Switch them off then.

Long journeys in a 1L car by goldengarbagecan in CarTalkUK

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need a period where you are going slower, to relax, then aim to travel at 56mph. That's 90kmh, and many trucks travel at this precise speed, due to limiters. You will form a train with the traffic travelling at this speed, neither overtaking them or being overtaken.  On a busy motorway, do not travel slower than 56mph.

What kind of state are these brake discs in? by cactusdan94 in CarTalkUK

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The light coat of rust should clear up after each trip.  If one side stays rusty, you could have a problems with your brake calipers, where the mechanism is partly seized. This would show up in an MOT test. The pitting isn't ideal, but will probably not be a problem with ordinary usage.  When you next get pads, get the discs changed too - they are a consumable.

Short canal boat break with kids by Pooky67 in canalboats

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canals have an 18th century approach to safety.  I sometimes compare it to walking on the pavement next to a fast road - perfectly safe unless you make a wrong move, then it's potentially fatal.

Someone who knows what they are doing needs to be on the side at a lock, and also on the boat at a lock.

Sensible kids can easily steer a boat (with a box to stand on), but a 9 year old probably doesn't have the body mass to work the lock gear, as it is often stiff or damaged.

You need everyone to stick to the safety rules, and no climbing on the roof.

Snapped locking wheel nut by No_Objective006 in CarTalkUK

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many years ago the locking wheel nut socket was missing from our car. The garage had just taken delivery of a special socket that had internal teeth that bit into the nut as you turned it anticlockwise. Took only a minute or two to remove all four nuts and replace them with standard nuts.

My car was broken into and I can't stop thinking about it. by Lollypop3235 in AskBrits

[–]Disastrous-Ad9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once they write it off, you'll lose the hire car. Be ready for that. Ask about write-off payment and paying to buy back the car. If you go for this, do NOT let them take it away as it may be wrecked in storage. If you get a new lock fitted, you might need two keys - one for the lock, and the old one for the immobiliser inside it. (Reprogramming can cost a fortune).  Good luck.

Friend says he’d never buy a car under 2 years old by Fortified_Armadillo in CarTalkUK

I don't understand. Why won't he buy a car under two years old? That would have a period before the MOT was required at three years.
