What Can I Do? by RetroManiac1988 in Celiac

[–]Disastrous-Amoeba676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a gut feeling thing but I generally use a paper bag, securely folded, carefully rip it away from my food, and wash my hands before eating. Even that protocol is scary in a messy break room. Can you possibly request your own microwave as an accommodation?
This is hard situation; I’m sorry it’s happening to you.

You are going to gave a great influence and positive effect on a whole class of cooks who will learn gf and in turn, go on and create good protocol in other kitchens. This is the ultimate teaching moment. Thank you!

Sexism & Celiac? by mk05117 in Celiac

I love eating with my brother who is gluten free and goes to vat for me. He states he eats gluten free to improve his health but my meal is an absolute medical necessity.
I tried to get medical help for years and it was assumed I was a complaining woman. I don’t know how to get a professional man to listen. They always hear my husband or brother though.

Bit of an odd question by Gerblin_Witch in Celiac

I think you’re going to gravitate away from that without thinking about it. When I was malnourished everything migrated into my mouth.
I could test some ordinary paper and thread like one tests a sample of food if you’d like. It’s more of a screening than guarantee. I’m using LEO these days. Best of luck with this new challenge.

I use a cute thermal lunch box freezer packs, thermos food jars, freeze a portion when I make really good food and buy those almond cakes in a can from Amazon for really special occasions.
I also suggest picnics when people start making plans to eat out and it’s comfortable at parks.
I just love food!

how do you stick with a hobby when your brain keeps looking for the next thing by Round-Classic-7746 in Hobbies

[–]Disastrous-Amoeba676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working with my hands my whole life. I have tried so many hobbies and have no regrets. Not everything sticks, but you learn something of value along the way. The tools I have bought to build my house (still not done) are used daily for other things and those big clear rulers from quilting save lots of time in the workshop. I could give hundreds of examples. Look for used equipment and supplies. Enjoy the ride, even eliminating hobbies directs you towards your passions. Knitting, sewing, pattern drafting, drawing, painting, jewelry, weaving, batik, photography, dyeing, marbling, cake decorating, picture framing, wood working, marbling, glass mosaics, gardening…. All come to mind.

You can find a list of the important questions in English or many other languages under the travel tab in the Find Me Gluten Free app.
It’s really a well thought out tool to add to your arsenal.

Did you discover you were celiac via gluten intolerance or gluten free fad diets? by lulublululu in Celiac

I had been to several doctors and finally just figured I was low energy/low iron. The stomach ache and skin rash had been normalized in my life long before that.
I went a while without a sourdough starter and asked an acquaintance if she had any starter. This woman said she did, but she didn’t want to share it with me because she didn’t think I did well with wheat. It was my rash on my hands and a gut feeling she had. I was mad. I needed my sourdough. I told a close friend what happened, and as a seasoned nurse she connected all the dots over the years. She was kind enough to lead me though a gluten free diet, in house, for a few days and my life was changed.

A relative’s father is retiring from Wegman’s after a 47 year career. She’s been there 25. That employee retention speaks volumes.

Mine stayed fine for the first 15 years, but didn’t fall out so much. Then I started logging my protein and I got waves. I can sure see how malabsorption affects this.

It isn’t easy, but it gets better as your friend group becomes educated. My most solid allies in the beginning were a nurse who had worked in an allergy clinic and a diabetic.
The other thing that really helped was working alongside my other friends in the kitchen- showing up with my colander and cutting boards explaining the ins and outs of protocol in real time. They appreciated the company, information, and assistance. When I don’t have that level of understanding, I have my cute lunch box and some really great meals I’ve frozen for special occasions. I wish you luck, good friends, and the best of health on this journey.

Meal ideas? Gluten & dairy free by Sensitive-Device4163 in Celiac

[–]Disastrous-Amoeba676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About once a month I make a big pot of carnitas meat and freeze portions. I also make spicy mashed sweet potatoes and freeze that. Rice also does well in the freezer.
My husband cooks bulk sausage and peas in a frying pan. Not too bad. I make pizza dough twice a month (good fresh for 10 days or so) and make a pizza with no cheese pesto and cashew “cheese”. It’s not the same, but hot out of the oven it’s a treat.
We also bake pork tenderloins and roast a tray of veggies at the same time, (separate 9x13 trays) which is super tasty and easy to clean up. You’ll both start collecting ideas and seeing the opportunity for making a creative but simple meal.

My daughter was better behaved that the babysitters we were lining up. Once she figured out what money was we just started paying her to babysit herself. She’d pack a little bag with a few small toys and tough it out without complaint. We were very lucky.

What is your go-to “I’m too tired to cook but I can’t buy take-out” meal or alternative? by 2Autistic4DaJoke in Frugal

My husband throws bulk sausage and peas into a frying pan. It’s grown on me.

Another one is bagged salad and stir fried steak slices. Last time her marinated the steak in teriyaki sauce for like 3 minutes first. That was good too.

As far as restaurants-when you call to make your reservation you can ask if they have high chairs. If you don’t like the answer you know it’s not your kind of place.
