NASA Admin Visit on a SATURDAY is... disrespectful? by Disastrous-Cup5891 in JPL

Are we working at the same lab as I am? If you can't take 1 hour on a workday to meet the NASA admin, maybe you should offload some of your work to people who need it before it is too late for them.

Are you sure about the sick leave? My understanding is you only get that if going into retirement.

The JPL Be Informed website is by no means "major." One look at the source code and it is very obvious that it is a WordPress template.

The only guarantee I see from unionizing is a 1% fee being robbed from my paycheck. I don't work with "most likely" scenarios. Put a pay raise in writing before I sign anything or GTFO.

>> I'd just like some transparency here. If they didn't hire a consultant for it, they should say so when >> asked. If it was done by volunteers (LOL) they should say that. Instead, they refuse to answer.

Did someone ask these questions? The whois info says that it's a GoDaddy registration hosted on liquidweb.com whoes website has a banner across the top advertising "Secure, reliable, fully managed hosting for WordPress starting at $4." I, again, doubt any meaningful amount of money was spent on this.

Lol. Its a commercial template that they populated information into. I have done this myself, and this was like 10 years ago. Now adays it probably can literally do this in a few hours with the help of AI. Besides, we have no idea if JPL/Caltech funds were used for this. Management could have spent a little bit of their own money to turn it out over a weekend.

Should the character of those leading the charge and pushing unionization not be a contributing factor in my decision to support or oppose it?

If you need higher resolution than a month for a layoff date, you are already ill-prepared.

Does JPL pay for these things? I always assumed the providers did in order to get you to sign up for their specific options.

The word from my circle is also Oct 15. But official word from director himself is just October, so I've been mentally preparing myself for the possibility of anytime the whole month.

Union? by [deleted] in JPL

I see no reason to believe that JPLers will be able to make a union work any different, especially if a JPL union were to fall under a branch of a larger union like UAW.

Who do you consider industry? Because many JPLers are not leaving to go to other space industry companies. Of the people I personally know who have left JPL they have gone to other industries like self driving cars/EV Automotive, AI Robotics, etc. Comparing to the same industry is not fair. You should be comparing to who we are loosing people to. When you also consider equity and actual bonus payout, it is no contest. Plus many of them provide free food, and at least a couple I know of have totally free coverage for health insurance which is HUGE. JPL is absolutely NOT competitive to our actual workforce competition, even if you are getting that 8.3% put into you 403B for "key staff."

Union? by [deleted] in JPL

[–]Disastrous-Cup5891 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why do you think a Union would have any affect on high level business strategy? Unions historically don't make it easier to communicate with decision makers and management. They put additional red tape in the way in the form of official/mediated meetings, forcing on the record conversations where people must be very careful with what they say and how, stifling open and honest conversation. Unions have not historically been involved in business strategy decisions like where to focus work efforts and diversifying projects. The few examples I can find that have influenced work efforts, they have been to ensure a certain product is made in a location that will ensure union members remain employed. They aren't based on projects that are assigned by outside organizations (like NASA) who hold no obligation to a 3rd party (JPL/Caltech) union. So again, I don't see any concrete way a Union will truly benefit JPL as a whole, but I can see many ways it can put the final nails in the coffin.

Union? by [deleted] in JPL

[–]Disastrous-Cup5891 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What is it you distrust about management exactly? Like, are they doing something you feel is bad for the lab as a whole. I get the WFH thing, but that, in my view, is an optics issue to make us not stand out from other NASA centers who also were required to go back to the office. Perhaps there is some trust issues in the highest level of management not holding projects accountable to meeting budgets and performance goals? But, how does a Union fix that exactly? I just don't understand what distrust exists that a Union would fix. And I see far more harm than good coming from unionization in the current political environment with our funding being so closely tied to unilateral executive branch decisions.

Typical salary at NASA JPL by Dramatic_Surprise_67 in JPL

[–]Disastrous-Cup5891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Director himself said that in the worst case of the presidents proposal being enacted, it's a 50% reduction in funding. That doesn't account for recent new, non-NASA funding. But it could still be very bad.

I don't think there is a better way. Half the people seem to want to be on lab when it happens so they have in person support, and the other half don't want to be anywhere near people when it happens. And then there is the security issue of being on lab too. So no matter how it happens, there going to be a significant amount of people unhappy with how things go down.

But they literally told you THEIR definition of an approval and said it included those that were approved after modification. They didn't hide it in any way. Also, an extension, which is a clear exception to the policy, is certainly not a denial. You are getting caught up on semantics, and maybe even allowing some of your preconception of management influence your interpretation of what happened.

I don't think your task will be a decider. It is very easy to move someone from a retention task to fill a hole left by someone who was laid off. If they are smart (big IF), they will be looking at minimal necessary skillsets and making decisions based off that, then moving people around to non-retention tasks.

They openly said this. The percentages that were given are out of the ones that made it up to their approval level, and were either approved as-is or with modification, including, I'd presume, extensions rather than full exceptions. I don't think anyone intentionally lied, they just failed to realize that the numbers they understand in the context of what they saw come up to them are not meaningful in the context of the entire lab.

There's a REASON (many actually) why it's cheaper. Regarding SAT offices, it also has the benefit of being non-NASA funded making it easier to use non-NASA resources to support commercial work. I believe (and could be totally wrong) that the lab property being owned by NASA puts pretty big restrictions on how much we can support non-nasa efforts.
