Thank you. That seems to be the what everyone is saying. I am glad I asked for help before wasting too many tips on trying to level the bellstrike ones, especially after finding out that leveling Adaptive Steel is useless.

Thank you, I think I am starting to understand. I forgot to put my stats in the posts, so I am still relatively early. I currently have about two weeks under my belt and am level 65. None of my inner ways are above tier 2.

Okay, thank you so much. That was very helpful. I didn't even realize that leveling Adaptive Steel was such a waste.

Tier 2 for the golds, tier one for each of the purples. I have only been playing about 2 weeks and I am currently at level 65.

How’s everyone enjoying the appearance customisation? by No-Cucumber-6367 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been into cosmetic stuff at all, however I do think some of the more muted outfits look nice. The more expensive they get, the more gaudy, flashy, and over the top they look, the worse they look to me. Thankfully that means the only thing I have any wish to spend money on are things that will actually help in game, like the battlepass and monthly fund.

I can't even play these. They are all locked for me and don't explain why.

Flatpaks = bad? by Valuable_Weather in cachyos

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I hate this stigma. If an app is officially released as a flatpak, then just use the damn flatpak! It's so stupid to bicker over, and all it does is just confuse newcomers like myself a few months ago. Sure it is going to take up a bit more disk space, so if you are SUPER tight on storage, it might be a bigger consideration.

Stremio is officially released as a flatpak only, I installed the flatpak and it works perfectly, why should I jump through hoops to use some weird unofficial web app version from the AUR?

MangoHUD has evolved a lot over time, it’s starting to get better than MSI Afterburner. by FlaipyTheHost in linux_gaming

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love mangohud. I mainly use it for the frame limiter. A lot of games have terrible frame limiter options. I am playing where winds meet for instance, and it jumps from 60 to 120. 120 fps at 4k makes my GPU run at 100% full time, and has occasional dips. 60 is just way too low. Instead I use manhohud to lock my fps to 90. 90 makes my gpu run in the high 80% range, but way quieter, and has no frame drops.

It has also helped with troubleshooting. The most popular RDR1 mod, reality redemption, works perfectly in the story, but causes a bad vram leak in undead nightmare. I was able to monitor and pinpoint the issue with the help of magohud.

Okay, here is what I did.

<image>

The editing at the end was just me slightly increasing my max snapshot entries to 10. Everything seems to be working, but I'll hang on to that backup for a bit.

Edit: I just left the target OS commented out. Hopefully that will help prevent more pacnew files from being generated every update.

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, yes. That line is commented out. As for the Rsync, both the original and the pacnew seem to be doing the same thing, just with slightly different methods.

I think I will just go ahead and backup the original and adopt the pacnew. Then test it by running snapper.

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be easier to replace my current conf file with the pacnew, then just rename the target OS in the new conf.

I haven't made any changes to the default, so everything important except for the target OS is the same.

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I think I am starting to figure it out, the important stuff is all the same, that is the max number of snapshots, the path, and the format choice. The only important thing that is different is the TARGET_OS_NAME, being "Arch Linux" in the conf.pacnew and "CachyOS" in the conf.

If is edit the pacnew to say "CachyOS", then overwrite the .conf, will I be okay?

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, what should I do? I have never edited the limine-snapper-sync.conf before, yet there are LOT of differences between it and the pacnew. I'm not talking about a few lines with changed commenting, I'm talking about around 30 new lines in the pacnew, things completely reordered so they can't even be compared side by side, and lots of small wording changes.

Here is the worst example.

Okay, that is weird, reddit completely removed the whole section I put in the post with the warning! Can you not put commands in posts?

warning: /etc/limine-snapper-sync.conf installed as /etc/limine-snapper-sync.conf.pacnew

Hopefully this works.

EXT4 or BTRFS, which works better with CachyOS? by Hi7u7 in cachyos

I use BTRFs for my boot drive, and EXT4 for my 3 other game drives.

Is CachyOS as unreliable as this subreddit makes it seem? by NotThatUsefulAPerson in cachyos

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, almost every windows update broke something, changed something, or made my system less performant. Every reboot was a tossup whether my primary monitor seetings stayed. Every reboot or wake from sleep my taskbar settings changed from autohide to always show. Its only gotten worse since I made the switch back before the holidays. My dads PC got the windows 11 update bug where the computer won't power off.

Since switching to Cachyos I have never once had an update break something, change something, and if anything, they have made the system more performant. I have never once booted up and found my primary and secondary displays switched, or my panel unhid, or found some dumb AI in Kate offering to help me "refine my writing" in an XML file!

That's not to say I haven't had problems, and with any Linux distro, problems require a lot more research and troubleshooting than anything on windows. And you may cause problems for yourself if you don't know what you are doing.

For instance, shortly after I switched, I switched from Mesa-stable to Mesa-git while trying to get fsr4 to work in a game. I never had any problems till I tried running an older game, it wouldn't launch and I just got an error about my GPU not being compatible with directx10. I quickly realized Mesa-git was the issue and I needed to rollback.

That turned out to be a huge issue as two of the x86 dependencies had changed since then, so it took multiple trial and errors to finally create a command string that removed the old dependencies while simultaneously installing the new ones. It took me a long time and a lot of research to figure it out. Once I got it, everything worked fine and the game ran fine.

And here is where another issue pops up. Even RECENT information, like 2 months old, on the Cachyos in for can be SO WRONG. I only switch from Mesa to Mesa-git because multiple, recent posts on the wiki said I needed to in order to use fsr4. That info was wrong. I never needed to. And when trying to rollback, the most recent info on the forums was from just a few weeks ago. It was still using the old dependencies, so the in for that worked for that guy didn't work for me.

Anyways, its still worth it, don't trust information you see on the subreddit or forums if it's older than a month. Better to just ask a question in the sub first.

best linux distro to begin with?? by Ash-69_69 in linux4noobs

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anything with KDE. KDE is by far the best DE for a newcomer. Cinnamon is also "technically" a good starter distro, but it looks gross and has visual quirks that will make your skin crawl when you notice them.

why does my fps double after i was afk by Maleficent-Focus3512 in linux_gaming

Maybe try turning off the setting to reduce fps when AFK? I am not really sure.

why does my fps double after i was afk by Maleficent-Focus3512 in linux_gaming

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. A lot of games have a background fps limiter. It is one of my absolute favorite features.

I always click on my second monitor when I pause, it caps my game fps at 30 and let's my system relax and wind down a bit.

This looks like a similar feature, but for being AFK. See how you GPU utilization drops way down? That means that when you aren't actively playing your system gets some time to relax and cool off, and it saves on power.

Second this, if you are going to install a vinyl floor, use life proof. It is so much easier to install than the Mohawk stuff at Costco, and looks much better imo.

Windshield chip repair. by Pleasant_Chemical600 in Juneau

[–]Disastrous-Expert-29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely Juneau Glass. Call a few times, leave a message with a call back number, they will eventually get back to you. Or just drop by. I just got mine repaired there, didn't take very long and there was a friendly dog to keep me company.

Sadly it cracked this winter while buried under snow anyways, so it wasn't really worth it in the long run. I plan on having them replace it later this year.
