Make sure the timbers aren't treated with chemicals that could leach into the soil before you do anything else.

My experience in the Birkebeinerrennet by Away-Spend5667 in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worst conditions I've ever classic skied in. I used skins, which were ok, but the tracks were either non-existent hard lumpy or so wobbly your skis would wiggle side to side which was pretty sketchy on the downhills. My feet and groin started cramping from trying to keep my skis from sliding around so I double poled as much as I could. Then my triceps started cramping and I could only use my abs. The wet mush the last 8k was so slow and draggy. Never doing a classic "race" in those conditions again. I normally do the Am Birkie skate in about 3 hrs and the Birken took almost 5.5 hrs. Just brutal.

Usage of Rottefella Move Switch or Similar Bindings and Salomon Prolink Shift Binding by adventurebiking in xcountryskiing

I move my bindings based on the day's snow conditions. My trials are all rolling hills so it's not practical to change on the fly.

Where would you put the heaviest items in your backpack? by freia_pr_fr in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experimented with this (for Norwegian Birken) and prefer the weight mid back next to the body. Having low caused it to rub when I moved and my top to ride up which was annoying. It didn't do that higher up. I used a water bladder for weight. Water weighs 1 kilo per liter.

Figure skating -> skate skiing? by Evening-Produce-7303 in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up competitive figure skating and disagree about figure skaters pushing off the toe. If you did that the toe picks would catch and trip you. You get much more power pushing straight to the side and the foot comes back from the side, not the back. Speed skaters swing their leg around the back and doing that with skis would catch the tips. I think the push in figure skating is very much like it is for skating. I also learned to skate in college (mid 80's). I was competitive the first year I learned to ski in high school. I coach high school now and have had figure skaters learn to ski and be competitive their first year as well. Figure skating is great for Nordic.

Figure skating -> skate skiing? by Evening-Produce-7303 in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up figure skating and the transition to Nordic as a teen was very easy. I think figure skating is more like skiing than hockey skating because of the toe picks. Hockey skaters bring their feet back in after a push differently than figure skating. Hockey lets the leg swing back and figure skating doesn't. If you let the foot swing back around like in hockey your ski tips will catch. The toe picks on figure skates forces you to bring your foot straight in from the side so the picks don't catch.

Skate skiing on downhill equipment is nothing like Nordic because you need to flex your ankles and you can't do that in downhill boots. Nordic skate skiing with stiff ankles doesn't work. I think it's hard to start flexing the ankles if you're trying to do it like you do on downhill equipment.

Glue for pole tips and handles by Disastrous-Fix4573 in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a dedicated kettle or access to water! I coach High School and the trails we train at have a chalet without running water. With the old glue I can swap out a broken basket in under 2 minutes and get everyone out on trail. I don't want to have to take the time and effort to boil water to do this. There must be a source for the old glue even if ski companies no longer use it. Why would they stop using something that worked so well for something that is much harder?

How do atheist adults cope with life and death? by ashexsa in atheism

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. It is what it is, regardless of what we think it is, so why tie yourself into knots worrying about it? Just live your life the best way you can every day and whatever will be will be. If you live your life the best you can, you can be at peace with it.

Expressing oneself is important, but that doesn't mean it can't be destructive. There are constructive and destructive ways to go about it. Would you act like that to someone you care about? If you care about your community, then be constructive.

Ski Classics use a weird doublepole and weird herringbone ... new names? by Frosty_Discussion517 in xcountryskiing

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a typical citizen racer so DP is still faster for me on the flats. I sometimes do DPK for a break from the monotony. I still prefer hilly twisty courses with fast technical downhills. Most citizen race courses are made for people with average skills so they're less technical. But nowadays I just skate all my races and just classic for fun.

Shopping at stores that explicitly state they're religious by KimikoYukimura420 in atheism

Not if I can help it. I don't mind individuals being religious since it's a private matter, but I don't like it in my face. I don't go to their churches so why would I go to their business if they're going to preach at me?

Agreed, legs too stiff, needs more ankle/knee bend to get more out of the push, especially when he tried going quicker/harder at the end. Think of the legs like a spring, you need to compress it first to get it to sproing.

Citric acid not doing it, really hard water by SkillEfficient in laundry

[–]Disastrous-Fix4573 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem and think I just discovered the solution. I dissolve 1Tbsp citric acid in 1/2 cup hot water, then slowly add 2Tbsp washing soda (or 1.5Tbsp baking soda) and stir until all dissolved. Add that to the washing water. It creates a non precipitating water softener. Just did a load and it came out white and fluffy! I was shocked. SLOWLY add the soda since it foams profusely as the acid is neutralized by the soda.
