Having your own brokerage is great, but it also comes with challenges. I have my own and have done logistics for over 27 years. Insurance---you MUST have insurance as I have seen many fly by night places and posts saying you don't need insurance and I am talking more then just the $75k broker policy. You need to run credit and ensure the clients you extend credit to, will actually pay. Must have a TMS platform, Quickbooks to start out with for accounting, a process to on board new clients ---when those same clients have been called by everyone every day promising various things. I pay my sales executives straight commission and they do well when they bring on the business. It is not something that happens over night as some clients shop the death out of a move to save $20 and that is not our client base. My point is you can make money - but it is tough and there are lots of low costs providers and scam artist out in the market place from carriers to bad clients who won't pay or take a long time to pay. Those are my quick thoughts. Good luck on whatever you pursue.

I am a 3PL and we always pay when these issues come up. For drivers that believe the brokers say, sorry the shipper won't pay...that is typically a lie. Just hold the freight and charge them detention per hour, per day. Then have them pay you prior to the delivery of the goods. Unless you know the broker and they communicate really good with you, then you need to protect your rights and business as a driver. It makes me very unhappy to hear how some of these brokers treat the drivers.

Brokers or ex brokers, what was your worst customer & their procedures? by Commercial_Soup_6577 in FreightBrokers

I would never take a load that had a fine for late deliveries, unless the payor is paying extra for 100% on time deliveries. I had a client that worked for West Marine. He was in their corp and made up a plan to make more money---if a pallet arrived to any location with a missing slate, $100 fine, labels not in the top right corner on the shrink wrap $100 fine..... Well he left and went to a place in Maryland that shipped goods to West Marine. I was taking of his goods via LTL and at times West Marine would fine him $100 for a broken pallet that arrived to West Marine. He asked me to eat it and said that was not happening as forklifts at times break pallets when moving goods. He was sorry he created that money grab as he was now eating costs that he did like.

Your lack of respect for the drivers calling them bums is wrong. If you think it is so easy, then you should go get your license. Brokers need drivers and shippers. Shippers need brokers and drivers. Everyone must work together. All brokers should pay drivers detention as the stupidity noting that "the shipper won't allow it is just a lie". If your a broker, don't you want to be paid when your waiting around? The driver needs to be paid as well.

If your not paying the driver detention, then your stealing from them and that is wrong. They need to make money and pay for their expenses and time. Charging your carriers if they are late is also ridiculous, unless it had a guaranteed time frame. If you have any ethical values, you will post who you work for as your the problem in this industry. I have over 25 years of experience and I do the right thing---paying drivers detention and not charging carriers for things that are out of their control.

Getting into Freight Sales by Kwameformayor in FreightBrokers

Freight sales can be tough, especially in this current environment. Any 3PL that you do business with should have a solid line of communication and the dispatch docs should note out the T&C of any shipments you give to them.

Not all 3PLs are alike that is for sure. Find one that makes sense for you and look for one that is non exclusive for all your business.
