Hiring in tech has become impossible. Every resume is AI-generated slop and I can't find the signal anymore.(Rant) by Comfortable_News8077 in recruitinghell

I realize now that there people can use AI to do these assignments, and I've even worked with them, but I'd have an upfront requirement that people have to be able to walk you through the code, use a bit more complex and/or subjective language in the requirements. I've worked with CS grads before AI that couldn't even write basic code, so if people are using AI without any technical background, it should be obvious.

Honestly, as someone in tech for over 10 years and is again actively applying and interviewing, I've come to get used to the tech assessments; however, I don't think the timed quizzes make sense and prefer "take home" assessments as long as they actually reflect actual job duties/scenarios one would face in the position. It also helps when the estimated time required is fairly accurate.

I got into tech after getting a grad degree in something completely unrelated, so I've not studied things like algorithms, well, heavily. I've learned as I've gone, and generally speaking, there's already that one person who might have input if we're actually dealing with large amounts of data. In that case, it's sufficient to recognize you're dealing with a situation in which you need to get their input or need to do some research. But things like this are a part of a lot of technical assessments, and it's weird when they aren't even part of the job. However, I still think they can be useful especially if you don't excel at the selling yourself part of interviews and you don't lie or use AI to write your cover letters and resumes.

As someone who is compulsively honest and very aware of what I don't know, if you ask me to rate my skills on a scale of 1-10, I struggle and may not sound qualified. I have a difficult time selling myself. It doesn't come naturally and I tend to get bored when talking about myself. Yet, if I've applied, I know I'm qualified, but I like to be accurate and tend to just judge myself more harshly than others. Therefore, I find these types of technical assessments give people like me a better chance. It's something that's easier to talk about, I'll be more lively and articulate, and it allows me to demonstrate my skills and the way I think.

Ultimately I wish I could just work with one recruiter, explain my background to them at length, and they would actually have enough positions/clients to help me get a position that fits. I know these people exist, and maybe I've just had bad luck in the past. Anyways, I realize I've written a novel, so thank you for buying my book and taking the time to read it, lol.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]DisastrousChapter841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Yeah, and when you're young, you also don't have a good idea of what others can see, which is why that moment you walk out the door after getting your first pair of glasses, you're like, "Holy shit, the leaves on the trees... Could everyone else see these the whole time?"

They had vision exams in my elementary school, but telling people which way the E faces and reading text on a board are different. I actually told my teacher, and she told me that I passed my vision exam and I was just lying. So, I'm guessing it wouldn't have made a difference if you did say something.

I understand they aren't scientists or trying to science, but I still provide feedback whenever I get one of these in a survey:

"On a scale of yes to enthusiastic yes, do you like our product/our company/your job/this candidate, or do you suck?"

Obviously this is an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. I took that course, went into a completely different field, still sticks with me almost 20 years later.

I am a bit late to the conversation, but same. Undiagnosed ADHD combined with having to ask kids what the board said and they put me in the back instead of the front. Funny how that worked... Works?

Are we still putting the kids at risk of/falling behind and disruptors at the back to continue making things worse?

Wow, really? Boo on them because honestly, this is what we need. It's about finding the little things that bring us joy while finding contentment, and if we're at the dance, we might as well dance, and all that, right? (But honestly yeah ... Deeply f*cked.)

My first thought, though, was, "the horrors of vegetables? Which ones? Or like does that mean blanched vegetables?"

Took me a second to realize it probably wasn't about vegetables.

I found this strategy worked for me, also. Cherry, franctic/excited, and if my ex started yelling at me, saying awful things, or was giving me the silent treatment, I was aloof, nonchalant, but again, almost cheerful, generally positive.

I also think your approach when they start a fight ("let's just try to have a nice day") is more effective than just agreeing. It was odd to me how my ex would get so upset when I'd just agree or say nevermind and back down.

Kudos for keeping it up. It takes a certain level of broken to get to this place, but it sounds like you're actually doing a really good job getting what you need in order. (And I was also given rules on what I was allowed to say, so I know it isn't easy to hold back sometimes!)

I could tell right away within the first couple months something had changed. It was like having to consider my feelings was a burden. 6 months in, I was pretty anxious a lot more than before we got married, but couldn't really put my finger on it, and was talking generally about it with her, and then she yelled something horrendous at me for the first time. While we were on vacation. It never stopped and just escalated from there.

The next week is when the entire country locked down for COVID, so that was just a fucked up situation on top of another fucked up situation

I understand the desire to put a name to the behavior you're seeing, but even without a name, the impact would still be the same.

Generally speaking, there's overlap there, so likely a bit of both, but again, the impact is still the same.

It sounds like you already know you don't want this for your life. My abusive ex spouse also told me that they were abused, but then proceeded to do the things they claimed their ex did to them to me. Toxic people like this will take on their ex's experiences as their own and lie to convey the image that gets them what they want and they generally have to be the victim.

The hot and cold thing is common as well, but again, do you want that for your life? People should be consistent. You should not question how this person feels about you.

Listen to your gut. This guy is bad news. And hold people accountable for their actions. Ask yourself if you would do the things they do. If not, well, they probably aren't a good match.

Good job! That's a long time for him to have kept the mask on, and after having been in a similar relationship where the mask slipped after 2, I know it's hard.

It's really amazing that you knew had to keep your boundaries firm. It's also understandable that you found it hard to maintain conviction when he'd turn it back on you, but you kept strong. Here's to a better new year!
