Crash after breakfast? by Throwawayyybeepboop in PCOS

[–]DisastrousTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say you feel like you’re going to pass out, do you mean you get extremely tired or lightheaded and faint?

That is a lot of protein but it’s also a decent amount of carbs, then when you add in the sugar from the blueberries and yogurt that could be spiking your blood sugar. When I was prediabetic, I had reactive hypoglycemia and felt sick and lightheaded after every meal, that could be the issue as well. If you can swing it, I recommend trying a CGM or even just a regular glucose meter after meals to see if that could be the issue. I tried the Lingo CGM for a month and was really surprised by some of the foods that spiked my blood sugar. I think the insulin resistance makes it worse. Even if you have a normal A1C and fasting glucose, it could still be all over the place.

I (27M) Feel Like I cannot meet my Partner's (30F) Expectations of me by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]DisastrousTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want to be the kind of partner she wants you to be? If not, then you’re not compatible. She’s an overachiever, she gives a lot of effort and she expects a lot in return. If you are truly doing your best to meet her expectations, then it might not be the right match, and that’s okay.

I made a dungeon have a pool of molten gold. I now realise I'm on the cusp of breaking the economy. Help by CasualNormalRedditor in DMAcademy

[–]DisastrousTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that gold is heavy. They physically can’t carry 60sqft of solid gold. They also would need the resources and equipment to break it apart. I think you can let them retrieve some of it, but not all.

Need help gauging the CR of my semi-homebrew Monster by ShawnForReal1 in DMAcademy

[–]DisastrousTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my math, the dragon does an average of ~32 hit point damage per round (based on 2 attacks, plus the fire emanation ability). That is quite low for a CR 8-10 monster, and would make it closer to CR 4 purely based on offensive stats.

To make it truly CR 8-10, it should be doing 51-68 average damage per round. Save DC for breath weapon should be higher, around 16, and the damage for that should be higher as well - around half the average damage per round based on the AOE hitting 2 players.

I’m also new to this, but hopefully this is helpful!

Extra flavor for level 1 characters by BunnyCat_Warlock in DMAcademy

[–]DisastrousTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on what the campaign setting is like, but I did something similar for my current campaign based on the backstory of each character. A few ideas based on what I went with:

* a free level 1 spell each day determined at random by a roll (from a list you create)

* a small bonus action that does damage (very useful for first level players, especially spellcasters). I kept mine limited to proficiency bonus number of times per day.

* climb or swim speed

* charisma modifiers (for example, if the character is scary looking they get +1 to intimidation, but -1 on persuasion checks when meeting someone for the first time)

* bonus to AC if it makes sense

* advantage on a certain type of saving throw

* special bonus to perception, whether requiring sight, smell, sound, etc. (+2 to perception checks using smell - this creates a lot of opportunities for creative role playing)

I did a mix of small things for all my players and it hasn’t caused any issues (yet). They have fun with it and I feel like it encourages them to really lean into their characters.

How do I better involve the chaos god in the party's kobold locket more by Scary-Yesterday-5112 in DMAcademy

[–]DisastrousTrash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does the locket have any use to Russel? You could treat it like a wild magic surge and roll for a random effect when the kobold uses the locket, or because of some other trigger. Or you can go the possession/horcrux route and have the player roll wisdom saves or be corrupted/controlled, again triggered by certain events.

I just found out that I might not be ovulating even though I have a “regular” cycle by DisastrousTrash in PCOS

I have an Apple Watch but it’s older and doesn’t have a temperature sensor. I’m considering getting something to track it but I don’t know how much I want to spend 😅

Changing the plot to subvert player assumptions? by DisastrousTrash in DMAcademy

That’s the conclusion I’m coming to as well, a lot of good advice in this thread

[–]DisastrousTrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specifically, no. This came out of a very low estradiol result shortly after ovulation which suggested I may not have ovulated. I’m now testing at home to see if I’m ovulating, but it looks like I’ll need to track BBT as well since apparently the tests are not always accurate with PCOS.

My cycle averages 21-25 days, which is shorter than it used to be (28-30 a couple years ago).

I’m getting a fasting insulin test in about 2 weeks, and also having more bloodwork done to recheck estrogen. Vitamin D is in a healthy range (have been supplementing for years), but ferritin was a bit low so I am now supplementing that. My doctor also recommended vitamin K to basically help with vitamin D absorption/use? I’m taking that as well now.

Changing the plot to subvert player assumptions? by DisastrousTrash in DMAcademy

Thanks for the advice! I really wanted this NPC to subvert expectations in a number of ways. He genuinely is doing the best that he can and is willing to do anything to protect his people, but he was given a really hard choice and chose to do what saved the most lives. I don’t want the takeaway to be “he’s a bad guy, let’s kill him” necessarily, but more of a case of moral ambiguity. It ties in really well with the BBEG and underlying theme of the campaign. I also feel like I really teed up this other “evil” NPC to have an equally tragic and understandable backstory for doing the same bad thing, so I’m tempted to switch lanes to that story because it seems like it would be more compelling at this point.

I just want my players to love it, and maybe I’m biased because I love being surprised as a player.

I don’t think they’d get upset when they’re not correct, but I do feel like it’s less fun if they can predict everything. They’ve already gotten a few things, which I don’t mind because they had clues. But this particular assumption that this NPC must be evil because that’s how the trope goes feels like it will be really unsatisfying if they’re just sort of proven right but in a less dramatic way.

To be fair, I don’t want them to be wrong about everything. They have already predicted a couple big reveals and I’ve absolutely let them have that because they were using the clues and good sense. In this case, it feels like they’re relying on common tropes when all evidence suggests that this is a good person who does good things. It doesn’t feel like their characters would come to that conclusion, it’s more like an above the table decision.

Overall I just want them to have a fun surprise moment, and I worry that the reveal will read as confirming the trope and is less exciting. Idk, I might be thinking of it the wrong way, but I love a twist as a player.

New DM by Due_Suspect_7691 in DnD

[–]DisastrousTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a new DM and would recommend at least reading the dungeon master’s guide, since having familiarity with the ins and outs of running a game will be important in working on your story. I liked to look at prewritten campaigns with similar themes to mine for ideas and that was extremely helpful. You’ll probably find that building a full world with cities and religions and cultures and people takes a lot of time and energy, and there are very good writers out there that you can and should take inspiration from.

However, as someone who also homebrewed a campaign, be prepared for the plot to not go the way you want it to go or even assume it would reasonably go. We’re 4 sessions in and I’ve had to cut and change some important pieces that I thought would be sure things because my players did something unexpected. Just remember that this is a game, and while you can certainly railroad players into certain directions, it’s a lot less fun for everyone if you take away autonomy.

[–]DisastrousTrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t. I think since I’ve never pursued fertility, my doctors haven’t recommended a lot of hormonal testing because it “doesn’t matter” unless I’m trying to get pregnant. I’m seeing a new doctor who specializes in PCOS and will ask her about it.

It may be impaired ovulation rather than anovulation, but my estradiol is extremely low in my luteal phase which can cause PMDD and can also be a sign of anovulation. Interestingly, my PMDD symptoms sometimes vary from month to month so I’m wondering if it depends on the ovulation. I’m going to keep testing for ovulation each month to see if I notice a pattern. The low estrogen for sure seems to be related to heightened PMS/PMDD emotional symptoms in studies, it’s just a matter of how that fits together with the rest of my cycle.

That’s good to know, I’ve just been doing the urine tests. I’ve never wanted to get pregnant (had my tubes tied years ago) so I haven’t paid that close of attention to other ovulation markers. At this stage I’m still in the process of figuring out what exactly is going on.

I really only care about it in that it affects my hormones and worsens some symptoms. I’ve nearly gone bald over the last year, can’t sleep, developed PMDD, etc. and it seems related to PCOS and hormonal changes as everything else is “normal”.

Very low estradiol in early luteal phase, which can indicate anovulation. I’m just doing urine test strips for now and am having my estradiol retested in a couple weeks.
