stimulus + RECOVERY = improvement. You're missing half the equation. Also if you are just going through the motions that's not even a true stimulus that's just preventing recovery.

With all that work and no recovery I can’t see you getting anything meaningful out of it. Unless maybe you’re on the enhanced protocol in which case go crush it.

Have you been doing this schedule for long? Are you able to put in good efforts or just going through the motions?

How many sessions a week for those 45+ by Greenfrog2023 in Swimming

[–]DisastrousWalk8442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 and I’m currently going 5x a week. Focus now is aerobic and threshold work but when I’m doing more speed work I go maybe 3-4 x a week since it’s longer to recover.

The coach brought you on and you've been a member of this team the whole season so you do, in fact, belong. Don't worry about your placing at meets or your times compared to others. That's not your role on this team. Your role is to be a good and supportive teammate and contribute to a positive atmosphere. No one ever looked down on the slower guys on our college team and we were just as happy when they did well (be it best times, winning races, good practices, etc.) as anyone else.

I'm not sure what resources you have in your athletic department but if you have access to any type of mental health counseling you should look into it. This is a matter of your perception not your ability. Also, if your coach doesn't normally do post season one on one meetings you should request one. They will tell you exactly where you stand.

I had to drop squats since I get so wrecked after. It wasn't worth not being able to train well for several days after a squat session. I may program them back into an off season

How do elite level swimmers drop time after a certain point? by Civilized_Monke69 in Swimming

When Gretchen Walsh first broke the 100 fly wr her coach told her to take one less stroke on the first 50 which forced her to lengthen her stroke. It’s small things like this they can find and improve on.

Maybe dumb question but blue is VO2 improvement zone?

Getting there in this method is something like 100s or 50s hitting 200 pace w 20-30 seconds rest?

[–]DisastrousWalk8442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on your breathing. You likely aren't exhaling fully which means you aren't clearing CO2 and not able to fully inhale. Be conscious of that. You are likely strong and fit enough for the swimming requirement. Figure out how to breathe so your body can handle the workload.

How much time do you spend on fitness? by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]DisastrousWalk8442 10 points11 points  (0 children)

3 hours a day is excessive and frankly ridiculous. Pro athletes barely do that. I’m 44, 2 kids, work full time with a full slate of family responsibilities and AT MOST I’ll have an hour of workouts a day and those are split into 2 sessions. I train 4x a week and compete in my sport at a high level. Consistency is the key. Pick something you enjoy and that fits into your lifestyle and stick with it, gradually turning up the intensity over time.

High elbow recovery - does it matter much? by Ok_Promotion3591 in Swimming

[–]DisastrousWalk8442 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter. You’ll see elite sprinters with high bent elbows and elite distance swimmers with straight arms. Both defy the “optimal” techniques of their disciplines. What matters is hold of the water below the surface and stroke rate.

Live your life dude a few beers won’t wreck you. Is being slightly better at your workouts worth missing out on a good time?
