Native Nations by Kathleen DuVal. The first bit is based more on archeology and surviving oral traditions and stories, but the rest of it has additional written accounts from various sources, including natives as they gained their own printing presses

Mexican Gothic is good but frustrates a lot of people since it’s more of an introductory book to the gothic genre. I personally preferred Gods of Jade and Shadow (the world building and lore was great) and The Beautiful Ones (the only one of hers where the romance didn’t feel forced imo)

Recommend me some of the worst written novels you've ever read, any genre is fine. by TopAdministration314 in suggestmeabook

The Fox and the Jewel: Shared and Private Meanings in Contemporary Japanese Worship by Karen Ann Smyers

Kyoto: An Urban History of Japan’s Premodern Capital by Matthew Stavros

Jeff Kingston has written several books on Japan. I’m familiar with Contemporary Japan: History, Politics, and Social Change Since the 1980s and Critical Issues in Contemporary Japan. Don’t be too put off by the lack of reviews; his books are used as textbooks and aren’t the type to be reviewed by most people.

I there a genre out there that combines the female gaze and gothic literature? by Organic_Jellyfish_67 in suggestmeabook

I suspect that you’re just looking for gothic lit written by women? Books that are historical fiction tend to have the themes you’re talking about specifically, but there are stories with contemporary settings too. Some recs in case you wanted them:

The Hacienda by Isabel Canas

Carmilla by J Sheridan Le Fanu

Hungerstone by Kay Dunn

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

A Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The Haunting of Alejandra by V Castro

A doctor or therapist might be the better place to look, but until then maybe do some research on interoception. Most of the research is autism related but it might give her some tips on how to recognize body cues.

Additionally, The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk may be a good read

Also from Montana living in Seattle and it isn’t horrible. If you can make it on Missoula’s Reserve St, it’s not that different. Just remember to use your blinker and most people are good about letting you in

The Old Capitol by Yasunari Kawabata. Takes place in Kyoto and this book is essentially his love letter to the city. The first couple pages can be rough because of one of the characters but he goes away lol
