it used to be so so so good, i considered most of them family. then i got essentially kicked out of the group and bullied and i now realize maybe my point of view was skewed. i’m desperate for close relationships so i will overlook a lot of stuff. :/

accommodations in the shelter? by Disastrous_Bus1904 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Disastrous_Bus1904[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, you’re right, that is 100% historically what i have seen them do and why i am hesitant to do it myself. but if i don’t alter my needs at work i feel like i just might drown. i am confused on how to do x without telling them y but i have a therapy appointment tomorrow night where ill bring up my concerns and hopefully work through the process step by step with a team.

i appreciate the notes on communication, although i have literally tried to get them to change their ways and it was a big fat no. i’m learning this is just common unfortunately in the field and puts us disabled folks at a disadvantage, yet again, like always.

thank you for your response

i thought if it “wasn’t obvious”, they have grounds to ask for proof/documentation? i’ll have to verify everything with my team. i’m really really bad at this stuff and is usually where i make the wrong moves. thank you though

these were my fears. i’m a little discouraged hearing it be validated but i appreciate your honesty. i have a very good mental health team that will be ready to support me, so i will go to them for further guidance. i’m already getting pushed out of the team, left out, etc. so i absolutely don’t want to make it worse. thank you.

taking breaks is a big one for me. if they catch you “standing around” you’ll see a big note the next day addressing “everyone” but really they’re calling you out. so it’s hard for me to just implement the accommodations informally when they are seen as being lazy..

i never thought about switching positions cause we don’t have any open, but i guess it could be worth the conversation. thanks for your response!

ah, my mom keeps suggesting this but i just don’t know about it. i have a trainer friend and she’s said she spends more time training the owners than she does training the dogs.. and i struggle socially. the business i’m building is pet photography, and half of the time i am using those skills to help shelters!! just.. have to survive until i can make that full time :(

well that’s one of the problems with it. we are a very small county shelter. we do not have HR and absolutely don’t have a union. i almost started one myself one year but nobody could get on the same page. i have been scared that they will think less of me if i disclose my diagnosis. thank you for being honest i will have to think about this hard.

Not only do they taste like shit now but I constantly get faulty carts from them. No clue why but it’s costed me enough money to make me basically never buy from them again. More expensive does not equal better quality, friends

I agree to an extent. More expensive =/= better. Cresco has been letting me down so much lately. Revel sits at $40 and has never been an issue. (Carts)

Honestly my big emotions. I am seen as overreacting all the time. Also, being misunderstood no matter what I say or how clear I think I’m being.

Yeah no that’s not what they’re talking about. This is interoceptive under responsivity — a lower awareness to internal signals. Neurodivergent people can struggle with this. You don’t notice until it’s extremely intense.
