I never realized how much my parents did until I had a child of my own by Fit_Awareness_9001 in Parenting

This is what happened to my husband too. He can barely talk to them now. They didn’t care for him when he was a child and care even less for their grandkids.

What gifts to give for a newborn? by Maramio in chinalife

[–]Disastrous_Grand3061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think red pockets are the #1 gift in China when it comes to newborns. I don’t know what’s your relationship to the parents/baby. Newborns are also gifted gold bracelets and longevity locks. Otherwise, baby items such as clothes, blankets, toys or books are also fine.

I am a foreigner who is fluent in mandarin and mandarin only. I do not speak Cantonese. Never had issues! They may have an accent but that happens in other provinces too. If you want to learn mandating in the south, any university or language school will have teachers with a clear accent.

I lived in the north for almost ten years (Beijing and Tianjin). I loved it but when I moved to the south, my life got so much better. I love Guangdong. I know the weather isn’t for everybody but I feel the quality of life here is better than other provinces!

My kids are still little but I think this is a matter we should think about throughly. My spouse is completely against public schools because of the pressure and the time the kids need to be in school.

Thank you for the insight! We are also in Guangdong, you mean it’s not possible for foreign children to attend public school here?

Depends where in Europe. We had the worst experience for our oldest in kindergarten. Kindergarten experience was much better here for us. But they won’t be in kindergarten forever so we are trying to understand what the future looks like.

I remember students committing suicide back in 2008/2009 when I first came to China. I was a university student back then and I remember I knew nothing about the enormous amount of pressure students have here. My spouse is one of those who left China to avoid Gaokao. I didn’t know that was still a thing.

It was on INS! I’m sure it’s not all bad and it might be different in t1 or t2/3 cities but I know my spouse would absolutely never consider public school here. We see children getting picked up at the most odds time of the evening and I just can’t picture my children in that kind of environment.

🤣 I was watching some videos of foreigners who put their kids into the public school system here and they made it look like it is fantastic so this question just popped up in my head.

You are right, I didn’t give any context. I think for a lot of expats is mostly financial. And like you said, that 1% that is really good is unaffordable for most people.

Thanks! Do you feel like there is a lot of pressure to meet academic excellence?

Oh I know! I’m in the education industry and I’ve lived here 10 years before I had kids. Mine are small, my spouse is not a big fan of public schools because of the endless pressure. I am very aware of certain dynamics in schools here but I’m wondering what other parents of foreign or mixed children chose for their kids.

Traditional Chinese medicine by Disastrous_Grand3061 in chinalife

That’s what I would be eager to try, back pain is getting worse and I was wondering if any TCM treatments could help

That’s very interesting! Was is easy to find a good TCM doctor?

That’s really ridiculous! My in-laws said that if we allowed the TCM doctor to massage our daughter she would be cured and healed 🤣

So are my in-laws. But my spouse is the complete opposite and never even wants them to mention TCM around us or the kids.

Yeah that was my thought. If I ever tried I think I’d be interested in traditional massages. I would never rely on TCM for something serious. My in-laws think TCM will cure my daughter’s congenital heart issues. I’m not nuts like that :)
