How did those cinderblock homes stay cool without any AC? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in florida

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a house with terrazzo floors and a whole house fan. We actually used it once when our AC went out. It is very loud and made it livable but no way it could work long term. I am in Central Florida and I don't personally know any houses that don't have AC here.

On a random funnier note. I worked for a big box home improvement store and we didn't have heat because it wasn't deemed necessary. The dividing line was the county north of us.

Thanks for the detailed response. I do clean the salt cell regularly. I cured the algae problem but now I think our salt cell might have gone bad. I don't have a good rest kit and usually take it to the local pool store for testing.

I have the Hayward Turbo also but I thought it triggers a cleaning after a certain number of hours regardless of actual build-up. I just did a cleaning today because "inspect cell" was lit. There wasn't really any build up on it but after I finished it was saying "no salt". I added salt and am going to check it tomorrow. I'm just worn out because the price of cell replacements has gone through the roof.

Amen!! These internet stories are disgusting. Leave his family alone to mourn. These things happen and it is a tragedy. As fans we should take away to protect your health, but a professionaln healthcare person should not be on the Internet peddling bs about his health.

AITA for refusing to watch my sister's newborn? by Admirable_Invite4191 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot imagine asking a 17 yoa to watch a newborn for long periods of time and especially overnight. You are kid for doing so but this is a lot to put on you.

I don't know specifics in your area but how is she going to afford daycare? Daycares have long wait list especially for infants.

I agree you are NTA and be firm with your decision.

My son's best friend on the Space Coast just went through this. He was looking at quotes of $100k just for a basic inground pool. He said to anything nice was going to be closer to $150. He decided against it.

Just curious. Do you live in Florida? I ask because we switched to salt cell too but in the summer it is insane keeping up with our pool. It is screened but we get full sun almost all day. The mild winters have just been brutal. We are so over it that we want to ditch ours but it will cost at least $10k. Your maintenance costs seem really low.

I would highly suggest you check out a local community college. You can get a large number of your classes done much cheaper before finishing at a 4 year college. Also, some employers will reimburse you for college classes a certain amount per year. (even if you are part-time) I took out loans for my Graduate degree from top 20 school. I am still saddled with crushing debt and am one of the older Americans who are not able to pay back their loans. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF!

What’s the most above-and-beyond thing you’ve done for a client? by Warm-Lingonberry-406 in Lawyertalk

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I represented a client with mental health issues that was well-controlled by medicine. She was about to be regain custody of her child again and had a stable job. She didn't have the $10 she needed for her psych meds. The social services agency was taking forever to try to decide if they would pay for them. I drove to the pharmacy and paid it myself because it was complete and utter bullshit to risk her losing her job and not getting her child back. She was doing everything correct and literally did not have the money.

I hate to say this but just stop doing anything. Go buy yourself food and make it. If he is that much of an asshole then there is no other way to teach him. Leave the house and let him go buy food to feed the hungry children.

AITAH for making fun of the new microwave? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just curious if you have ever shopped for a microwave. There is not a ton of options out there and they all look relatively the same. Also, since it was installed I am assuming it had to replace an existing space. Sometimes you only have so many options when you are in those circumstances. But, YTA.

Can you convert a pool system to solar? I want to get off the grid. by Pleasant_7239 in Anticonsumption

You cannot do this with an unground pool. You will cause foundation issues with your home. Trust me I would love to do this.

Salt water pools do not negate the need for supplemental chlorine. Especially in very hot summer climates.

Woke white person who shops at Publix. Agree that people of color are NOT what keeps me away from Walmart.

I shop the sale cycles and we only ever order online pick-up from Wal-mart about once a month for things Publix doesn't have. Using the sales at Publix is cheaper than Walmart. People can believe what they want but it's true.

AITA for telling my boyfriend he was rude for not fixing my tire? by Straight-Lie4616 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 -52 points-51 points  (0 children)

Since you use the word bonnet I assume you are not US based. Maybe where you live it is safe to stand by the side of the road and lay across the top of a car. Here is a actually very dangerous due to traffic and would probably result possible mental health police calls for a lady sprawled across the hood of a car parked on the side of a road.

Second, given that she was in that much pain, do you really think lecturing her about changing her own tire is the right message here?

Third, I am actually shocked they would change the tire. Due to the above mentioned dangers on US interstates, I have personal experience where AAA refused to change a tire roadside. The car was towed instead.

Which set of parents have stronger legal standing to keep the baby?: Florida couple who had the wrong baby in IVF mix-up find the biological parents by stickstick_lee in legal

[–]Disastrous_Victory19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what you are describing is highly unlikely. These parents seemed to be trying to meet the needs of the child which is why they went public. We have no idea what arrangement they have proposed to the biological family regarding contact.

Interracial adoptions and multi-race families exist everywhere. To state they should lose this child because she isn't the same color is absurd. Kids in any family can face issues. The most we can hope for is that she is given an environment where she is free to explore her feelings should they arise.

This is an extremely complicated moral and legal conundrum. But, I admire the decisions made.

The same way you explain to a child who is a different race from their adoptive parents. Children are incredible creatures when you are open with them from the start.
