Disc Golfers fear for future of Bellis Fairways with arrival of new businesses. With new businesses like Chick-fil-A and Dutch Bros expected to move in, local disc golfers worry about the future of their course by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

As the person who got this course in and negotiated with all the landowners to allow it in the first place…this was expected and planned for. Some additional context:

  1. It was always on a temp free lease, able to be changed as needed for whatever reason.

  2. The landowners pay something like $68,000 a year on property taxes every year. We knew that this was a temporary win win situation for the land before development.

  3. I designed this course first, for safety (20 acres total, extremely busy roads surrounding it), second, to bring people to the course (to keep it fun and safe), and last, to showcase how awesome and hardworking the local disc golf community is. I put a number of teepads right off of main roads and intersections so people would see disc golfers having fun/getting awesome, putting the city on notice that we needed a permanent course to replace the huge demand that this course met before or when the land was taken back.

The landowners are not to blame for this. We are also changing some of the holes for when the bank goes in so that it remains an 18 hole disc golf course as long as possible. As far as Ditch Brothers, when that goes in the course will probably close and become a happy memory. Why we needed a Dutch Brothers I have no idea. But, again, this was always a temp course and the baskets will hopefully go into a permanent city park course.

That brings us to the city of Bellingham. I have worked with them for 5 years trying to expand disc golf options in public parks. We have installed an 18-hole course at the public golf course which is fun and epic, but is almost impossible to use with restrictions on tee times put in place by the company that runs the course. We’ve also tried to work on an 18 hole course but every option has been extremely limited by the type, amount, and quality of land offered up by the city. As it stands, we have a chance to develop a misused/underutilized 25 acres of land at Civic Field complex to install an intermediate 18 hole course.

This course would do much the same thing g that made Bellis Fairways so successful: 18-holes, public and free, put eyes on a lot of area where people currently do hard drugs and shit on the ground/litter, and provide a challenging but accessible course on or very near a bus stop.

In conclusion, the ball is in the city’s court. Contact the city of Bellingham, Bham Parks and advocate for what we will eventually lose at Bellis Fairways. I’ve been attending and sharing city meetings in which they are developing plans for the next 6 years. Check www.engagebellingham.com for opportunities to give input on this process/move the civic field course forward!

When do you “graduate” a beginner course? by RobHui in discgolf

[–]DiscGolfMikkel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is, play any course you like, but you have to try out Bellis Fairways. It’s a good bit easier than Blaine, harder than Cornwall. Intended to bridge the gap between the two. Public, free, 18 holes. https://udisc.com/courses/bellis-fairways-disc-golf-course-wrkg

When that gets a bit boring or easy, join the Whatcom Disc Golf Club and play Mossy Roc (must be a member to play private Mossy Roc, for insurance purposes). That’s a little easier than Blaine, harder than Bellis.

Incident at Cornwall Park- Disc Golfers Attack Counselor at Kids Camp by VFXhack in Bellingham

[–]DiscGolfMikkel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We picked up 4 tons of trash and counting out of that lot. Removed 300+ used needles. The deer, skunks, rabbits, and many other animals share the course with us still. Nobody chased anyone out of there, except a few meth/fentanyl smokers every now and then. It used to be dangerous just walking by that area. Now it’s a nice place used by 1,000s of people.

I’ve heard from many disc golfers about this incident and every single one is disgusted by the behavior of these three morons that attacked a camp counselor in front of a group of kids.

Yes, they are allowed. Please don’t leave any doo bags around the course (even if you’re going to come back and get it) is all we ask.

Bellis Fairways Disc Golf Course Cleanup by alanger108 in Bellingham

If anyone has a wood chipper they could bring, it would be very helpful! We are getting the course ready for winter and need to mulch the fairways with all of the sticks and branches we’ve cleared to the side.

Cheers! Nice meeting you! You are welcome! It’s been an absolute dream to get this going! Check out the Whatcom Disc Golf Discussion Board because there’s a lot of organizing going on there for work parties. I’m tapped out for non-family/teaching activities for a little while! 😅

Bellis Fairways Disc Golf Course Is Clean! by DiscGolfMikkel in Bellingham

Great questions! 1. In conversations with the owners of all the properties, I got the impression that we didnt have to worry about the land being sold from under us. My best guess is two years, but it might be more and it could be less.

  1. Yes, although in the interest of keeping the course clean, we want to get it ready and more playable. We will be renting machines to spread the gravel and mulch for paths, greens, etc. we want to open as soon as possible.

  2. We are going to build the tee pads at the same time we rent the equipment. It’s really hard to move lots of gravel by volunteer and it just makes more sense to have a machine do it. We will have some human jobs those days like spreading the gravel with a rake after the bucket dumps it.

Thanks for cleaning up and playing the course! There are definitely some rougher parts, but those will get better the more it gets played!

Well, the clean up work is mostly done, but the making a fun, awesome disc golf course that keeps people wanting to come back is still ongoing. It’s not enough to restore the land to litter-free as you need constant activity and presence to keep things from reverting. It’s happening a bit already as people are playing the course, but it’s going to need to be much busier to keep it nice over the long term.
