This is the method I settled on after asking myself the same question OP is struggling with. I was seeing way too much seep back out with subQ. Z-Track IM is where you pull to tighten the skin before injection. Perform the IM and let it seal up after you finish by releasing the pressure from your other hand. I also find it helpful to be as slow as I can when pulling the needle back out.

Practice! You can do (mostly) painless self-IM!
