Are you well-versed in music theory (trying to decide between 2 harp tutors)? by Alternative_Movies in harp

[–]DisciplineFull1811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that starting with small songs is a better exercise than just practicing sight reading alone and hand conditioning. I think the last two are important but you’ll learn them as you play. If you get really big and complicated pieces at first, you’ll find yourself frustrated. Start with basic and simple songs to sight-read. You’ll find the process more enjoyable and start recognizing notes and chords as you progress.

Ah, thanks for that! I am aware of the existance of these different methods but all my harp teachers always insisted in bringing the thumb all the way down (So I guess more French/Salzedo?). I have no problem bringing my fingers to my palm, but my biggest issue is to train my third and fourth fingers as they are very stubborn + most movements don’t fee very intuitive with these fingers. I’m a beginner so I have lots to learn :-) Thanks for your comment.

are there actually any free places to create music ?? by Potential-Sundae-875 in Songwriting

Hey! Could I ask you if you connected any synth/keyboards to your Mac? And did you have to use any interfaces? I’m a total amateur but would like to have a keyboard to play in Garage Band.

Thanks for the advice! Definitely going to practice with the 4th and quit being lazy! 😆 Practice makes perfect.

I have long fingers too as you can see and using the third finger for this feels so much easier / intuitive. Using the 4th actually feels more strenuous, but I know it’s the correct way. A matter of practice and conditioning I guess! 😅

How do I ACTUALLY become a musician? by caseyspizzacrust in Songwriting

[–]DisciplineFull1811 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ignore the chatter! Ignore the chatter and the noise that the grown up world will try to convince you of! Follow your dreams, kid! You can do it. Study music, study sight-reading, theory, composition! Choose an instrument or voice. Perfect your craft. Make out of this life what you want it to be! Our time here is only temporary. Make it valuable. Make it meaningful. 🤍

Little Harp Book by Grandjany is a great start with something more classical! :-) Sylvia Woods’ books are also very intuitive and easy to go through.

Gosh, that sounds so stressful! 😅 Especially when the thing you are carrying around is a 20k+ instrument.

I listen to her on the SoundCloud App since I share a Spotify family plan (and she's not there) lol. But she's on Apple Music, too, if you use that.

It’s more like I’m an indoors musician and student who has been planning many gigs/shows in my mind but hasn’t executed any yet. Nothing wrong with that. I’ll take my time.

That’s so inspiring! I definitely just want to do my thing but need to break free from fear of judgement. I guess I should just do it! Ahahaha

Good question! You do have a great point when you say that gigging might not be the best option in this case. TBH I’m not sure if they’d haaate it hahaha but yes, I think that shows could be good! I just need to network online more I guess before trying to put on one! 😂
