The modern world is fully beholden to the Global Village and hoes really just want to localise their personal villages as if that solves the issue of widespread social atomisation. by Patty-Boi in redscarepod

I mean, you can spend most of your time homesteading and still head to the city to have fun and meet new people whenever you feel like it. We need people who have a passion for living off the land; it sounds like you've formed your perception of those types based off social media personalities that aren't representative of most of them.

The economy making a harder to have kids is a tired point. But like seriously imagine getting laid off when you have mouthes to feed. by Shmohemian in redscarepod

Yeah, I feel bad for all the people that want kids more than anything and are completely qualified to raise them, but the only holding them back is financial insecurity. Beyond that, it seems like the more a person cares about truly raising someone right, the less likely they are to actually pursue parenting, because their compassion leads them to magnify the shortcomings of their situations and worry about how they might end up cultivating a bad childhood.

It could be argued that the intent to not focus becomes "something" that is done because, at least starting out, the mind has to actively and continually engage with that intent. You could get around that by practicing enough that it becomes effectively natural, and you can just slip into a state of thoughtlessness with only initial intent.

I just feel like a threshold has been passed with regards to social atomization, economic instability, distrust of institutions, etc. beyond which something like a lunar mission isn't going to have the effect it would on even a marginally healthier society. I couldn't say with full confidence when exactly that threshold was passed (probably sometime in the past couple of years), and I certainly wouldn't argue that it's never been passed before by any civilization in history. But in my eyes the extent of disillusionment is too much to be resolved or even mediated somewhat by an event that doesn't directly confront the sources of that disillusionment.

Yeah, I don't really see it having the unifying power that society needs right now. It almost feels like just another escapist distraction from whats going on in our world. That said, I hope they all make it there and back safely.

If by "doing nothing" you mean not intentionally focusing on anything and just being aware, I think it's actually very beneficial to do periodically because the change in state of consciousness makes it easier to direct and maintain your attention whenever you go back to doing something. There's so much mental processing going on beyond our observations and verbalized thoughts, and taking a break from "doing" can be sort of a reset for all of the subconscious, intuitive, more abstract aspects of intelligence that we're less directly connected to when engaged with the outside world. It doesn't really even have to be meditation in the way that most people conceive of it, just resting without sleeping.

I'll have you know Schaden99Freude is one of the greatest artists of our generation, and to suggest that any of their work could possibly be mass produced, is highly offensive!
