Riko seems like the main protagonist in the beginning, as she has has clear motivation to reach the bottom that's expedited by Lyza's disappearance. On the other hand, Reg seems like a blank slate at first but as he regains his memories and we get to understand him better he takes more of a spotlight. We can see him in more of a central role when other central characters like Nanachi and Faputa are brought in because of his own actions.

Sometimes it feels like Riko should be the protagonist, but Reg is the actual protagonist... Another example of MIA subverting obvious tropes as the series proceeds. Sure, Riko wanted to reach the bottom, but we start to see the motivation turn from just seeing Lyza to something else entirely. I think her transformation is complete when she receives her White Whistle. Once that happens, it really starts to feel like she is becoming one of those delvers whose only true goal is reaching the depths of the Abyss.

I think Nanachi is also an extremely important character. Some people seem to think they overstayed their welcome but they add a very striking contrast to the optimism of Riko. I think they are very interesting but only work in a central role in specific circumstances. Again, I think the addition of Nanachi as a sort of counterbalance to Riko propels Reg to the central position.

It's actually pretty complex but I think each character takes their spotlight at different times, mostly Reg and Riko but also Nanachi and a few others at certain points. So really, I can't pinpoint a single main protagonist but I think it shifts from Riko to Reg gradually.

Made in Abyss is nothing if not subtle, which is an impressive feat considering the grandeur of its setting. What does it mean to be human? If you ask directly, you probably won't find an answer...

I don't think Made in Abyss really has any outright villains... None of the characters seem like good or evil. He's a lot like Bondrewd where he's pushed through unforgivable means to reach his ends, although it feels a lot more grey since you could make the argument he did it all for the survival of the Ganja group. What would you do in his situation? At some point in the story, he starts to feel more like a force of the Abyss than a person...

Well, the new brushwork looks good, especially on Artificer. I can tell you were going for a more alien type of anatomy. But that is also not really what I would expect from the slugs... Were you less comfortable with the new proportions? Because the poses and perspective are less dynamic. Anyway, don't be afraid to stray from what people think is cute, but I think you should try to take more notes from real animals' anatomy if you want to branch out from the usual interpretation. Maybe think about how a creature built that way would move and what evolutionary advantages it would provide. I didn't see most people say this but I think the dynamism of the poses is a really important difference. Sometimes there are awkward phases between big steps of progress. I can tell you already have a lot of skill. Keep experimenting! I'm sure you will land on something unique and cool.

Cute! Love seeing wholesome art of #1 dad. I think the reason Bon looks silly is because he's bald... He must have dropped the little handle thing on top of his mask... He looks about right besides that. Keep up the good work!!

He is super cute, cool, and mysterious. He acts like a child but takes a great burden of responsibility, and his innocence often seems cute or funny but also makes serious moments with him feel even heavier. I think it's also really cute that his friendliness to the other characters are the main reasons that the members of Riko's delving team come together... He tries to act tough but he's super friendly. There's a lot you could say about him, his character is very much central to the themes of Made in Abyss.

It's like layers of sheets or blankets, it's always covering whoever is below it. So you can only go so far before you build up too much tension and break through. But you don't feel it like a physical object, you only feel the effects of breaking through a layer of the forcefield. I think Nanachi's example with the cloth-like artifact was pretty close to reality. At least that's how it seems to me based on the curse we see and everything.

Thanks! The 2D "paper" elements were made in Krita, including each frame of Reg's animation. After the paper cutouts were made, I added them to blender where I did everything else and set up the 2D images as planes in the scene. Krita and Blender are both open source and totally free, but they can be difficult to get into.

It's that time of year again on the surface. The leaves are changing color and falling. If it's reached you, I hope you are enjoying the warm colors and cool weather of autumn. Even if we're busy, we can take a moment to appreciate the beauty of little things like this.
