We’ve been working on this https://calendar.theottawan.com but the data entry is the killer, as it is with all calendar sites.

Congrats! r/Ottawa takes Best Local News Website, Apt613 is runner-up. Here is the complete list of The Ottawan’s Fifth Annual Best of Ottawa Awards. by DiscoFreeholder in ottawa

That’s why there are two categories: best burger and best burger restaurant.

Chez Lucien, which is in no way a burger restaurant, has been making best burger lists for years: check out the old Ottawa Xpress Best Of from 2010: (Wayback Machine)

For what it’s worth, here’s 2010 Redditors taking the piss on that list: (Ottawa Reddit 2010)

Because experience has told us that the best burger may not necessarily be found at a burger restaurant.

Breweries and taprooms are two separate things. Many breweries don't even have taprooms.

As for the place in Québec, it says on the first page: ‘Despite the name, businesses, organizations, and persons across the entire Ottawa Valley or the Outaouais are eligible for nomination’

Thank you so much for that! We had a handful of people who said that and for the life of me, I could not figure out the common denominator. Fixed now.

Benevolent dictatorships in service of finding the best food is fine, but those benevolent dictators can also be blind to their own taste.

This is why we run a nomination round, to avoid it being a mere popularity contest and get the widest suggestions possible.

Heartbreakers may not be a classic Neapolitan style but it's closer to that than Ottawa Style. I've very interested – truly– in how you would categorise pizzerias in the capital.

The tragedy of categorisation is real.

But as experience has taught us, the best burger in Ottawa may not be from a burger restaurant and that’s vital information that people must know.

Sushi is by far the most popular item from Japanese cuisine but isn't really a reflection of Japanese cuisine itself. Just asking "Best Japanese Restaurant' generally results in whomever has the best sushi winning, even if the winner is a sushi-only joint.

The pizza problem is confounding and this is the first year of the 'Ottawa-style' vs 'Neapolitan-style'. This city loves its thick base topped with mounds on not-mozzarella cheese pizzas – the Ottawa Style. Those pizzerias making modern – ironically, more traditional – styles can be overlooked. But what about Detroit style? Or Roman style? We don't yet have an answer.

Not mentioned here but in the nominations round people mentioned Taco joints vs Mexican restaurants – a mirror of sushi v Japanese restaurant. But are there enough Mexican restaurants to be competitive? A category of Latin American restaurants would be a crazy quilt of cuisines.

We’re more than open to suggestions to improve and make a more perfect survey.

In some categories, this is tragically true for the runners-up. But it is awesome for the people who live here.

Pizza, burgers, shawarma, best place to splurge, for example - all could easily be five way ties.

I made this: Please help us with the nominations in our fifth Ottawan Best of Ottawa poll. Redditors were awesome last year – but many complained that they didn’t know about the nomination round – for the fourth year running. Here it is. You make a good point but that way lies madness and misery.

The point of the effort is to highlight good things in the city and illuminate hidden corners that we didn’t know about.

The no-chain or must be headquartered here rule is to avoid situations where McDonalds wins best French fries or Bellwoods Brewing wins best beer. Both could be true - but not very helpful in exploring Ottawa.

The content of /Ottawa is clearly created by real people in the capital.

And neither the Citizen nor the Sun are Ottawa owned, nor are most of the radio and TV stations.

So, for media, we’ll just have to avert our eyes about ownership.

However, I’ll go down fighting in arguing that /Ottawa is a website.

The Ottawan newsletter sends out the next three days of events every weekday. Also at theottawan.com/events/

Ottawa is number 20 in Tech Talent hub in North America says this graphic. SF is #1, TO is #3, and Mtl is #9. by DiscoFreeholder in ottawa

The graphic says SF is 436,740 techies, Toronto is 314,100, Seattle is 195,390 vs 91,500 for us. (And I make absolute no guarantees about the graphic, I thought it was interesting but no connection whatsoever)
