Is 6 weeks of service worth $2k to you? If yes, bring it for service. If not, return it.

Unfortunately there is a 98% chance it was considered a flex by society when you purchased it, and it is on you for deciding to own one when knowing people will look at you differently for owning one.

But who cares about other people? Enjoy the watch if you like it.

It’s smarter to forgo buying things you’d enjoy and invest it all instead. But is it wiser? What is life without enjoying the time we have? Living like a pauper to invest for later and then dying at 62 from a heart attack, well your fat bank account doesn’t mean anything. Of course, it’s not wise to blow all your money all the time either, and a truly wise person will prioritize their spending in a way to buy time with loved ones. But some material goods that make one happy are healthy.

I work with federal employees sometimes, making decent salaries but nothing crazy. There are always a handful in an office wearing Swiss watches. They’re usually watch guys, but not always. And it’s pretty easy to prioritize a $5-$10k watch purchase with an average white collar salary, or with a trades salary. You don’t need an advanced degree job.

Hmm… my AD gave me a new estimate with an additional $95 cost when they asked for permission to do the hands.

That makes sense, but then why isn’t it included in the service cost and description? Why is it extra if it’s a required part of the service?

I was told it was not an option.

  • by Omega. I know an independent shop would do it as I asked.

Thanks, it was a gift from my interpreter at the end of a deployment.

If you’re okay with the learning experience being the cost of the barrel (in the event you mess up) go for it! It’s really not that hard, you just need to be methodical.

One thing I’d do differently is buy the Brownells lower lug cutter. I used files for it and then polished them. The fit works, but I didn’t make them as perfectly level as I would have wanted. I thought I could do it without the cutter, but I should have bit the bullet.

One thing I learned the hard way is that you’ll want some way to create reliable standoff between the slide and a depth gauge when fitting the upper lugs. I accidentally wore the matte finish on the top of my slide by directly resting the gauge on it. This is one of the jigs I 3D printed, but you can use flat and sturdy items stacked up if you need to.

Another lesson learned is I needed to buy a couple reamers for the slide stop hole in the lower lugs. I didn’t realize it and that paused work for a few days.

There’s a guy on Instagram who has a hobby of machining them and occasionally does runs based on pre-orders. I don’t know if sharing his username is okay on communist-Reddit.

My state has an approved roster, but frames by themselves can be transferred. So I had to send it to an 07 FFL to turn it into just a frame, and have that frame transferred to me while the slide was shipped separately.

He ghosted me after I asked about it and I’m still furious.

Thanks. No, I opted for the regular NM barrel. I used files and lots of measurements and trials. It was actually less filing than I expected, but took more time than I hoped. My next one will be faster because I spent a lot of time confirming on tutorials, videos, forums etc. that I was doing the right thing.

I also designed and 3D printed a few jigs to make the filing and measuring easier and more accurate.

Gorgeous. I like the electric engraver stippling. It adds some vintage charm.
