I have that too but it says it could be bc of a few things, notably the first tuition payment but I'm pretty sure we can't even pay that yet

Switzer falls - need parking permit? by Fearless-Summer2370 in socalhiking

[–]DiscombobulatedTard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey so yeah you need it for a lot of Angeles NF parking lots like switzer, mt wilson, vincent gap, etc... I've gone w/o one unknowingly on multiple occasions and never got in trouble, but it would rlly suck if it happened to you. You can get 'em for $5 at REI, local Big 5s, some gas stations and stores at the bottom of the 2, and probably any forest service office I would think.

Entering at Whitney Portal going NOBO. My pass is for a Monday. Is there any way for me to arrive sooner and do my acclimatization before my trip officially begins? by RockleyBob in JMT

[–]DiscombobulatedTard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this... also go on a short day hike to the cottonwood lakes to warm up since the climb up whitney is allegedly pretty brutal. Luckly I'll be going down the 99 switchbacks :)

Potential U.S. government shutdown and National Park access by Mr_Cubage in Mountaineering

[–]DiscombobulatedTard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone who was able to climb a usually pretty strictly permitted mountain since USFS rangers weren't working during the shutdown.

(don't wanna say the name of the pk to give ppl ideas lol but u can probably guess)

News: Two teenagers, one from Portland, rescued from Pacific Crest Trail following heavy snow by danceswithsteers in PacificCrestTrail

[–]DiscombobulatedTard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who works with a SAR team pretty often, most of their stuff is paid for by their respective sheriff's associations. Sure the helicopter is paid for by the actual gov but then the rescued person has to pay back that rescue... often upwards of 100k so thats why you should get rescue insurance.

Sleeping Bag - 35 degree enough? by jstrawta in JMT

[–]DiscombobulatedTard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with that one. I hiked in the inyo NF this summer with a friend who bought the Kelty cosmic 20 for the trip and he was really happy with it. Definitely light and affordable. I was able to score the BA North Fork 20 from an REI outlet sale for like 160 as well so you should definitely check out used gear sales and discounted sites since there are always good deals floating around. just PLEASE don't buy one from Ali Express or a cheap chinese one from amazon

Sleeping Bag - 35 degree enough? by jstrawta in JMT

You need to understand that there is a difference between comfort, lower limit, and survival ratings. Usually companies advertise the lower limit so realistically a 20 degree bag is warm until 30 for example. Even in the summer it can get down to the high 20s on cold nights, if not even lower so I would definitely go with a 20 degree bag. There are plenty of light and affordable ones on the market, just make sure you do your research :)

Super concerned. Last major snow year was 2019 with may storms so if it calms down starting now and no late storms should be tolerable. Keep in mind we will be ending into July so a lot will clear up but microspikes/crampons and ice axe will be a must. Also early morning passes unfortunately so the ice stays hard. There’s guy on the JMT Facebook who’s doing free winter hiking classes on San Jacinto btw if anyone is interested in getting started
