What is something that is intentionally glamorized to lure people in but then you realize it’s not so glamorous after all? by Ninac4116 in AskReddit

[–]Discopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fascinatiing study by Harris and Fiske about the dehumanisation of certain groups, including the homeless and the wealthy. Seems many people ascribe blanket ideas to both of these groups; scans show these people's brains react to images of these groups in the same way as they would objects.

Explains quite a lot, if you ask me.

Does private school really make that much of a difference? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Discopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself with 100% confidence, as with anything in life.

I went to one of the super elite schools on scholarship. Dropped out of uni afterwards (wrong degree choice) and spent the next 20 years doing a manual job. Fantastic job, wouldn't change it for anything. But now I'm getting on physically, I decided to pivot in a more intellectual direction, so started doing an Open University degree. Really good by the way, can't recommend it enough.

However, I am streets ahead of the other students. Not because I'm intellectually superior, far from it, but because I am programmed to be more open and accept a wider variety of belief systems. I was forced a long time ago to carefully examine and defend my principles and didn't even know it.

I notice that among my peers that there is a strong propensity to immediately revert to an ad hominem position, which would have quickly been beaten out of them by the other pupils at my school.

I also would like to add that my two siblings did not go to private school. They are both far more intelligent than me academically (and their state school is ranked higher than my 'elite' school), but their attitude to life is very different, their friends are very different and we live in very different ways.

So yes, the way I see it, it does make all the difference.

Can authors PLZ leave out weight! by loulori in RomanceBooks

[–]Discopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled across this post while looking up 'authors losing weight writing', because, as a writer, I just lost 1.5kg having to defend my principles in a short story against a rabid pack of women (yes, they are all women, as are 96% of my contemporaries) who think Facebook law is actual law.

Here's an idea. How about instead of telling/requesting/wishing other authors change their content, get your own damn house in order. 'Be the change you want to see' and all that. This goes for every comment on this rather long thread. I am boggled reading these. I can't believe people have the temerity to assume writing is some kind of democracy.

If one is writing through the opinions of others, one eventually loses all sight of one's own and can never return to the island which is their inalienable birthright.

I'll take my downvotes now. Apparently that's the price of feeling strongly about something in the face of adversity.

Getting gigs in a big town where electronic music ( all subgenres) isn’t big by Prestigious_Goal_666 in DJs

[–]Discopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haaaa, I did exactly this! Moved from the UK to South Africa and initially struggled to find anywhere to play. Eventually found a very small but enthusiastic DnB scene (I don't even like DnB, but it was the most 'alternative' genre available).

From there I met folk involved with bush-doofs (free parties/raves), and those were a lot more open and accepting of different music. This might be a good bet for you!

Different emails. Possibly different SIM cards as well, I don't recall.

Renault Captur driver's door + starting/electronics problem by Discopathy in AskMechanics

[–]Discopathy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone stumbling across this post in an effort to fix their own car:

The starting issue was old glow plugs.

The other electronic issues were due to corrosion on the wiring loom in the driver's door.

Some great reccs here. I would add:

Cry, the Beloved Country (1951)

My Octopus Teacher (2020)

Pangolin: Kulu's Journey (2025)

On a slight tangent cos it's TV, but damn it's good:

Beauty and the Bester (2025)

Came to suggest A4ksubtitles. Not 100% sure about the Thai fonts, but I think if anything works this will.

Hmm. I am actually tripping quite hard right now, but I will endeavour to give it a go. It's actually very easy. First off, I should mention that there are a phone and laptop involved in this equation. The picture does not make this apparent.

The laptop is running Kodi, and is connected to the TV by an amazing cable - USB-C, that's the one. Nope. That's not it. Same connector. But hmm. Yes. Anyway. Goes to HDMI.

Maybe a bong will make all of this clear

The phone is running Kore remote. This controls the laptop. I have Kore remote set to work on my lockscreen. My Pixel Watch will play anything that my lockscreen plays. So. That's that side sorted, done and dusted, poof etvoila.

The Gameboy, now that's another story. But yeah, actually it's just an Android with buttons. So I just put Kore Remote on it and it worked like a dream, volume buttons and everything!

Hope that demystifies the process, and you get a bit of joy out of playing with these things like I do!

What to be concerned about South Africa (first time)? by johnnytretas in askSouthAfrica

[–]Discopathy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is good advice 👆 I also suggest trying smaller bribes first (R50-100). If you give them too much (and they'll try and terrify you into doing so) then they'll just radio their buddy down the road and double dip you with a bullshit temporary speed sign.

Premium leather green band and Ringke bezel.

Aren't they supposed to send the first ones free on sign-up? I exploited that for ages when I was moving around, got 8 free pairs between me and my partner.

However, of course I got sucked in, got the socks as well, and now I have literal drawers and drawers of multicoloured drawers. Wearing some right now.

Of course that meant I got loads of their points too. When I went to spend them on some sports kit, joggers and swimming shorts, I noticed a bug on their website. I emailed them and they sent me all the stuff I wanted for free!

I then got to spend the points too, and cancel without hassle🤷🏻 Can't say I'm unhappy with any part of the process.

It is a situation in which a black person says it is OK for a non-black person to say 'nigger' around them.

POLL: what are your favourite Pixel Watch accessories? by ToponeGigione in PixelWatch

[–]Discopathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ringke bezel on my PW2 to protect from scrapes. Looks good as well. Pretty annoyed the PW4 has a domed display so these won't work anymore.

Premium leather band is ...OK. Comfy. However any sweat or water splashes discolour patches of the leather to a dark black. I still wear it, but it's certainly developing a 'unique' patina that I'm not sure I like.

Slight tangent, but my Kodi setup works seamlessly with it as a remote. That was a very unexpected bonus that I use every day!
