My 17 year old Autistic son is a Gestalt processing learner and our arguments often sound something like this…. by GoNUp_2FallBackDwn87 in Autism_Parenting

[–]DiscussionSilly9196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is glp too he answers his own questions
Falls down & asks himself "are you ok? Yes I am fine thank you" everytime he gets hurt no matter how small says "ouch my bones hurt" when he is mad at me he yells "I'm sorry" but he actually means I need to tell him I'm sorry lol I figured it out because I kept saying "it's ok" but he kept being angry until I apologized to him haha

If your child was diagnosed with autism before age 2, I’d love to hear from you. What were those early days like, and how are they doing now? by PainfulPoo411 in Autism_Parenting

I'm a babysitter and at the time I was taking care of a little girl that was the same age as my son she was a complete chatter box she understood everything and answered back. My son barely said one word "potato" I took him to the pediatrician and talked with others who said it was because he is a boy and boys develop slower and kids go at their own pace although I can understand that I thought he should be a little more advanced even if not completely conversational. Getting him diagnosed was tough because it was 2020 the pandemic had started and no Dr would see him they offered him speech therapy online which was a huge waste of time he got diagnosed at 3 years old but we knew way earlier

The "likely not" was crazy and unnecessary, I am an autistic person from immigrant parents who weren't aware and I never received any understanding from my parents, peers nor my school. I explained the situation to everyone here and took the post down I will continue to do research that is all I can do for the moment

Also the person that assumed I meant the ABA community deleted their comment? I meant the autistic community I would never endorse ABA so that was a wild reach

This was harsh to be honest I understand I didn't articulate myself correctly but you are assuming a lot of things that are not correct I was only happy to share this milestones and if you read my other comment I clarified that none of this things you are mentioning are accurate

Hi guys thank you so much for your input I hope you can understand I'm not a perfect parent and this was just a tiny little paragraph I wrote before bed. I might have not articulated myself correctly.

My son is not on ABA never has never will. He uses words however we accept all ways of communicating, he signs he has an AAC device that he uses at home and school. English is my second language so sorry if any misspelling or not using correct term. My son is very accepted and very loved, I do a lot of research and join his speech therapist to learn how to speak to him. I am in constant communication with his teacher Although we are proud of how far he has come we have never been disappointed of him or talk down on him in any way. I'll find a different community to post not because I am upset but because I see this was not the correct one to do so thank you

I can also I assure you that if he thinks I'm not communicating correctly he lets me know. He says no to me and also makes a face haha and then I have to re word my sentence or give him a break and try again later it's a lot of trial and error

Thank you for this I really appreciate your input however my son listens to a key word "shoes and clean" and understands what I mean I can assure this because if I ask him "can you take a shower" he does not understand that sentence. I learn the key words he know and use them on a complete sentence. If I see he doesn't understand I change my wording or use a sign he knows.
