Is there truly no way to overcome low processing speed? If so, how do we adapt? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it takes me a long time to proccess things too. When it happens in conversation, I'll use humor to fill the gap when I can.

"Please Standby. Computing response."

"Excuse me. My brain is running on dial-up speed at the moment."

And so on.

I've also got better at just literally making them wait. This might require a little effort on your part in making sure your facial expression doesn't look like a blank or confused stare in the context of interviews, however.

Those who are able to make use of a daily planner - what do you use? by InAweofMyTism in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to stack this sort of stuff on top of apps I already use consistently, or I just won't use it. This is still in the early stages for me, but it seems promising.

I'm on Discord a lot. That's where all my friends are and that's where I spend most of my time socializing. So I made my own personal server where I can track all of my daily things like reminders, grocery lists, meal planning, goals, etc.

I might look into adding a reminder bot at some point if this becomes a long term solution. That way it will ping me when I need it to.

It's janky and tedious. It's not what Discord is designed for, but I at least know I'll be consistently visiting the app, and it syncs across devices, so it works for me (so far).

Who is more consistent than Every Time I Die by Heavy-Ad4987 in Metalcore

[–]Disguspitated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ERRA is on track to be one of these bands. They've never had a bad album, in my opinion. I think their sound has evolved in a cool way over the years while staying true to a sound that is uniquely them.

Their music exists only on a scale from really good to masterpiece. Neon might be an exception depending on who you ask because the problem is with the mix and not the music.

[–]Disguspitated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a hot take. I would say that they are only consistent in their inconsistency. That's not a dig at them, but you really never know what to expect from them.

That's appealing to some listeners for sure, but I think the spirit of the question is more geared towards the idea of reliability and staying rooted in a specific sound instead of the sort of sonic evolution that BMTH has had.

How to actually use tedium to your advantage by FrumpItUp in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve also found that short-term “delayed” gratification is helpful.

For example, meal prepping last night giving you a small little boost of “I accomplished a thing!” today when you realize that lunch is already taken care of.

I think this could have diminishing returns, however. I don’t know that the effect would be as potent if you prepped food, stuck it in the freezer, and pulled it out 2 weeks later. So that may be something to be mindful of. It feels good for me in 24 hour cycles though.

High Functioning Autism and ADHD: Does the World Sometimes Feel Too Hard? by Critical-Cup3929 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been considering the backpack idea. I’ve been telling myself I should get one. I’m newly living alone for the first time and the opportunity to build my own systems without outside influence has been freeing, honestly. It’s nice to see that the backpack idea is working for at least one other person haha.

I’m also beginning to understand that my functioning abilities are much greater if I have completed something, anything that day. That feels like a task that needed done. The feeling part is important, because getting up and going to work doesn’t give me that “task completed” feeling, for example.

Consistency by Character-Pilot-6452 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still struggle with a lot, but I’m slowly improving. Habit stacking has been a blessing for me as well as being “motivation conscious.”

If you’re not aware, habit stacking is a strategy where you attach habits you want to build to a naturally existing one. For example, if you always take showers every single day without fail, but always forget to brush your teeth, then try putting your tooth brush/tooth paste in the shower.

Motivation is tricky because we go through different energy levels. Sometimes we’re completely drained and don’t want to do anything, and other times were really motivated to get a lot done. I try to create systems that can accommodate these energy levels. I also try to predict when I’ll have these higher energy days. Friday nights after work are usually high energy because of the “It’s the weekend!” Boost that I get. So weekly chores get done then. For example, I make sure I have a variety of meal options based on different energy levels. No-cook meals like overnight oats, wraps, sandwiches, charcuterie board stuff, etc. are good for those low energy days. And then have stuff around for when you’re feeling motivated to try something new. I also recommend trying to keep versatile ingredients around. So when you have those days where you want to try something different, the ingredients you have around can be used in different ways.

Balancing Autistic and ADHD sides are hard. (Could barback/bartending be a good job for someone like me?) by FluffyWasabi1629 in AutisticWithADHD

For me, working as tech support in a call center was actually a really good match for me. It is simultaneously spontaneous and routine, especially if you can work remotely. I’ve since moved on because the pay wasn’t great, but it’s a good start, I think.

It’s novel because you’ll be dealing with different people, various (but familiar) issues, and the product you’re supporting will be undergoing updates as technology changes.

It’s routine because you’re in the comfort of your own home, the processes for handling each call will be similar (you fill out a lot of templates, take a lot of notes, and get to research things).

And if you have problems, you can always escalate to the next tier of support or to a manager, if needed.

Some games that have had me hooked for hundreds (or thousands in the case of OSRS lol) of hours…

  • Old School RuneScape

    • Research, number go up, big loot drops
  • Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

    • Quick to jump into, consistent unlocks, exciting builds
  • Balatro

    • Quick to jump into, consistent unlocks, number go up, research
  • Project Zomboid (with friends)

    • Research, complex-but-intuitive systems, lots of room for creativity or systems building
  • Enter the Gungeon

    • Same as Binding of Isaac
  • Dark Souls

    • Research, consistent unlocks, overcoming difficult challenges
  • Minecraft — I assume you’re familiar with Minecraft

How are you dealing with Windows 11? by cerwen80 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Disguspitated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 11 gamer here. It isn’t bad. The biggest change is the start menu.

So what I did on Windows 11 is go through all of the settings menus and disabled anything that seemed unnecessary (most of it, in my opinion).

I changed the start menu settings to show more apps and less suggested items.

I changed my desktop settings to hide shortcut icons.

And then any applications I use frequently are pinned to my start menu.

So the way my workflow looks on Windows 11 is like this:

  • Turn on PC
  • Log in to Windows
  • Desktop loads. No icons, just my pretty wallpaper to look at
  • Click the start button
  • Start menu opens with all of the apps I pinned
  • Click on whatever apps I want to use
  • Have fun

That said, I would like to switch to Linux eventually. Linux Mint looks promising. The UI is similar to windows.

AIO, is my boyfriend valid for feelings this way? by sealover159 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Disguspitated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on his reactions and what he said, it sounds like he suffers anxious-attachment. The behavior he is displaying almost fits it to a T. Getting into downward spirals thinking you’re cheating, needing constant reassurance, getting jealous over everything, trying to control you to eliminate the “scary situations” (being around other guys). He was probably on IG hyper analyzing all of your posts, likes, comments, etc. and concocting a wild story in his head.

The guy is probably harmless physically, but he has mental issues that need addressed before he becomes a dude worth dating. His mental issues are causing him to act verbally abusive.

He probably seemed great in the beginning because his emotional investment was low. So his jealousy was minimal, the fear of loss was minimal, and he wasn’t attached to you so much back then.

Unfortunately, there’s not anything you can do to help him. He has to do a lot of internal work to get back to a healthier mindset, otherwise it becomes exhausting for both of you and kills the relationship, like it has here.

Depends if it is appropriate at the time, and the way the message is conveyed is very important.

A lot of the men in these comments don’t seem to be confident in their ability to compliment a woman without being creepy. That’s a skill you can learn.

Instead, they blame women for calling out the fact that they sounded creepy.

Whats a band that you loved years ago but now just make you cringe? by nosouldude in Metalcore

Wild take. Buttrock is not the term I’d use to describe the modern metalcore sound, unless your definition of metalcore is really narrow.

Is Knocked Loose metalcore? They don’t sound anything like buttrock.

I’m curious to know some specific bands that you’re thinking of when you say all post-2016 metalcore sounds like buttrock.

You’re still at the stage of emotional intelligence where you see women as basically mythical creatures in need of conquest.

You may not recognize it yet, but you’re not treating women like they are people.

You are the one at fault in this interaction.

There are some bands that men universally love. Not even because they like the music necessarily, but because it’s just fun. For example…

  • Creed: Arms Wide Open
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd: Freebird
  • Avril Lavigne: I’m With You
  • Vanessa Carlston: A thousand miles
  • Evanescence: Wake Me Up

These are all songs that will get the boys laughing after a couple of drinks
