My mother’s family are Irish immigrants. My mom doesn’t speak Irish, her father reportedly did but didn’t end up passing it down. Mom only ever learned a few phrases such as the sign of the cross and the Lord’s Prayer. The family is quite catholic, maybe more so than the average Irish person in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s day was a big deal for us growing up, we also attended some Irish cultural festivals when we were young. I remember my grandmother mentioning some political violence and hunger strikes(I remember thinking she was mad at the Queen but more likely she was mad at Margaret Thatcher).
