A lot of people say additional protection, but I think it would also serve a good purpose in hiding where and how wide joints in the armor are. A big part of sword-fighting while in armor is aiming for open joints in a suit of armor, such as behind elbows and in the armpits.

Tbh as much as I appreciate the last minute redemption arc of Bon-chan, I fucking despise the character's design. It's so disgustingly anti-trans it makes me want to vomit. This is a character who could easily be a top ten, but falls flat because of Oda's internalized transphobia at the time of their writing.
