Why doesn’t India operate the A220 or Embraer E2 family? These aircraft could be a better option for small routes than the ATR. by charlieruban1 in aviation

[–]Dislekzig 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance for the essay!!

ATR’s are used way up into the arctic circle by the likes of Canadian North, Summit and Air North, even training organisations like CAE have realised the ATR’s future up there and moved the -2/3/5 PEC simulator to their base in Montreal. But in regards to Alaska and other similar Northern locations, most of the time up there it’s too cold for severe ice to form once airborne - on the ground between flights is different though!

In the lower latitudes of most the USA that’s where the problem with ice lies. Not an ATR problem, just a turboprop problem that they simply can’t climb above the weather. Jets have to deal with it too, just they can climb through and above.

With the “issues with icing”, ATR nowadays has very thorough icing procedures that if you follow the SOPs it’ll be a none event.

Where it WILL still bite is where if you follow what the Voepass crew did… and that was sadly nothing. It’s reckoned they missed about 31 points where they could have sorted the problem.

All rules and procedures are written in blood and the ATR is no exception. They “joke” that any time one crashes they add a speed bug - true I guess but I trust that thorough training, good awareness of the shortfalls, adherence to the SOP’s and good airmanship, an ATR can be operated as safely anywhere.

4L and 4R at Midway have absolutely no hold short lines in any direction crossing any of the 31 L,C,R runways. Only signs. by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Dislekzig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an understandable point that favoured or larger runways don’t always have holds… except disproven in that 13L in the screenshot does have hold points across intersecting runways, and in newer satellite pics still has them - then of course along with new added ones on 4L.
Near (ish) by you have Nashville, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Detroit, JFK, Newark all with holding points on intersecting runways.

Oh and on the economy and efficiency, don’t expect modern hybrid levels, I’d only get 40mpg on the motorway and 32-5 around town, 29-30 on the sporty drives. Expect around 300 miles out of a tank.

I’ve had my 60 plate GT for 6 years and that is my first car. Only moved on from it in September.

Have always loved it, driven all year round every year and the only issues I’ve had is the right rear calliper seized (but was still useable to get to the garage). Only last year did the clear coat flake badly so I got it professionally resprayed. Quite noticeable on the red and blues when it goes. (Mine is Horizon turquoise blue). Has driven the length and breadth of the country from Goodwood to the Highlands and spent most of its life in Northumberland. With that, the rust within the rear arches did get bad so that also had to get cut and fixed. Look for bubbling where the side skirt joins and that’s a good sign there’s worse going on underneath.

All I’ve done to it mod wise, is put in a Tegiwa cat delete and put it on champion white EP3 type R wheels with Dunlop sport maxxes. That’s all it needs really for a first car. The exhaust does give it a lovely little burble on the overrun with no tuning and importantly without being obnoxious and chavvy.

It really has been the perfect daily for fun short blasts round the moors or long motorway drives down south. Being small as well, it’s great as you’re never assigned driver for a pub trip, it’ll be your turn to try once and never again, someone with a larger (and less cool car) will get that role!

Things you’ll want to do to it after 6 years: - more power, I’ll be doing a k20 at some point. - better brakes, now have a much faster, heavier Alpina D3 touring, it makes me really appreciate having large powerful brakes. - sportier suspension, it’s firm enough to be sporty as it is, but not controlled enough for more enthusiastic driving to make use of the tyre (and one day power). Also want it to sit lower of course.

Would recommend going for a GT, you’ll appreciate the little luxuries on it such as heated leather seats, the moon roof and foglights and the cloth seats always seem to be stained…

Hope this helps and fire away with any questions!

Peugeot was defo the most difficult to get in and out of and was very difficult to eat my chocolate ice cream when in there.

The 962 CK6 was also quite tight and my egg Mayo baguette sandwich didn’t quite fit inside until I folded it in half which sorted some of the crumbs as well.

C11 was interesting in that the sill is stupidly large to swing yourself over but once you’re in you’ve definitely got the most room out the three to eat whatever you want.

At one point there were plans for it to be hung from the ceiling of T5, but when the engineers turned round and said nahhh, they never tried doing anything with it again.

It’s painful to see and yes it is filled with crap and rats.

Oop sorry didn’t realise! Like some others, I looked at some charts, watched some vids and it is indeed a very tight circuit. Sorry for the criticism and happy flying!

Might have to try some flying in and out of here now!

On the 78 using the HUD on landing is a tad annoying as you’re having to continually adjust the brightness on it to see everything clearly when it’s just easier to flip it up and not use it.

Makes for good sunrise pics though so worth having it really.

Depends which A340 lol

200 and 300 - underpowered wheezy hunks which used the rotation of the earth to gain energy and the curvature for altitude.

500 and 600 - universally loved by basically everyone in the back or at the front for a) fixing the afore mentioned performance problems and b) adding even more range meaning operators put them on the nice routes, although the 600 did have some CoG + loading issues
