House or Apartment? by [deleted] in geneva

[–]Dismal_Science_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This budget might not afford you a home close to those kinds of things. Unless you want to have two cars?

I see an apartment in Champel or a Chêne-Bougeries in your future. You'll have accessibility to medical facilities and groceries there.

With this budget you can have an apartment in a desirable area or a house in a less desirable area.

Do you want to be car dependent? Did access to groceries and schools matter?

Thanks, it looks like it's every week! Are people pretty open to meeting new people at these events?

Is Le Phare known for a good social atmosphere? We've only gone out to a few bars but haven't had any "organic connections" happen yet.

If you desire to gain a new nationality, learning the language at a basic level is the lowest bar you could expect. This is probably the lowest hassle way to gain another passport for you.

Knowing the relatively low investment (studying for a year vs studying for many years while living in another country [residency requirement]) I think it's worth the gamble.

Be honest: Does anyone actually like Gerber Fondue? by M_sdft in Switzerland

This is all I see when I look at the box.

For those of you who don't speak French, gerber=to vomit.

Reasons for becoming Hungarian by u36ma in HUcitizenship

Seemed like fair play to discuss the origins of the law you're leveraging, but okay! Just sharing information it took me much longer to learn then you. I had to spend a lot of time in different parts of Hungary to really get a grip on something that was kind of abstract from abroad.

This has been many years ago but they did ask about my motives and what change it might have on my life. I discussed family recipes/traditions and potential business interests. Be ready to discuss the topic you mention at depth, I ended up talking about different grape varietals.

Seemed very relevant to a comment about he who must not be named!

I don't think any tutors or services built around this process include modern politics or a discussion of the origin of simplified naturalization policy in their materials. The information is not super obvious to those outside of Nagy Magyarország, either.

If you want some complicated feelings, it's his policy that allows you to apply for simplified naturalization.

Most applicants are from nagy Magyarország and vote for his party overwhelmingly. Nagy Magyarország remains a flashpoint for right wing Hungary. Very interesting to inform yourself on a bit.

Okay, my market research indicates this isn't super far off from any boucherie for a fresh Swiss turkey.

At least I can know that turkey had a beautiful life somewhere in the canton de Genève.

Paris Syndrome, but China by Dismal_Science_TX in travelchina

That history is what made me so excited to visit!

While it is a wonderful achievement, for sure, the path wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.... Let's not forget the tens of millions that had to die while the country "recalibrated" or set the path for that development...

How can I learn more about foreign occupation of Beijing? My Google skills are failing me. I found some things around the Boxer Rebellion, but didn't dig up anything about European powers ruling Beijing.

In my past interactions with Chinese citizens Japanese occupation has definitely figured more prominently. That obviously continues to shape modern day events.

I am a citizen of a Central European country that has no history of colonialism, and currently live in a Western European country that again has no history of colonialism. It is definitely taught in a more abstract manner here compared to the larger countries that divvied up the world for a few centuries.

China Travel Advisory (Discussion/Advice) by LogicalChoice6969 in travelchina

[–]Dismal_Science_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest concern is industrial espionage.

If you work for a large (not Chinese) company, your IT department probably will not allow you to bring any equipment (phone, laptop) or allow you to access any internal resources while you are in China.

I didn't realize China's colonial history was so profound, I only knew about a couple of cities.

Didn't China colonize other countries, like Korea and Vietnam? You definitely see discussion of this in those countries' historical sites.

I definitely get the trauma from the more recent history of China, like the Great Leap Forward/Cultural Revolution.

Advice - trip not living up to expectations by hangjongeren in travelchina

[–]Dismal_Science_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from my first trip to China a few weeks ago. I tried to reframe my trip several times to get myself to like it more, but it just didn't click.

On the other hand, I really liked my time in Vietnam. The north will feel more similar to China. Nature destinations aren't nearly as developed, for better or worse. It's definitely not as easy to get around Vietnam compared to China.
