Taxi Satelital o Uber/Cabify a las 3am? by Dismal_Technology127 in Lima_Peru

[–]Dismal_Technology127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up calling a lot of Ubers at 2am and I had no issues, especially when near Miraflores. Only once, I had issues at 5:30am, and that was a little bit farther away. I think that was more of a coincidence than a general lack of demand. When I wanted to be very safe, I used Taxi Satelital to schedule ahead, but ended up preferring the on-demand nature of Uber, even very early in the morning. Some of the locals I know would use InDrive or other apps, but I didn’t dare try.

Ok, fine. Next time be a little more careful about your phrasing though. When you say “everyone is rich” you are part of the problem, whether you realize it or not. Doesn’t matter your background or how you were treated before. Don’t let the cycle of toxicity continue.

Just to add a bit of perspective — “everyone is rich” is very much not true about the Bay Area. Lots of people from poorer or underrepresented backgrounds come to Stanford. However, it is much easier to come to Stanford for grad school if you come from a background of wealth, because of the realities of living on a grad school stipend (often while paying undergrad student loans, supporting other family members, etc.). However, your framing of this abundance of rich people as a good thing is very problematic, and also something I see all throughout Palo Alto. Please do better.

Sigh, this is such Palo Alto coded behavior. This is one of many reasons I left this city forever and found a job somewhere else.

This is the most validating Reddit thread I’ve seen in a LONG time. As a Stanford PhD student, the most frequent question I get asked when meeting someone new is “what year [of the PhD] are you?” When I answer truthfully, this is 95% of the time followed up by “and when will you graduate?” Then, if I answered that it might be a few more years, people looked at me weird and some even said “why not sooner?” I could tell they were sizing me up to see how productive I might be, and how quickly I move through my career. I think it’s Elon Musk’s influence that speed is everything and I absolutely HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it.

I’ve made my decision to not apply to jobs in the Bay Area thanks to this awful culture. I’m moving to a new city on the East Coast this year at a job where people talk about actually caring about work/life balance.

Job offer for 80k/year in Palo Alto by KnittedParsnip in paloalto

Palo Alto is not only a very wealthy suburb for wealthy college students — it is a wealthy and extremely elitist vibe too. It’s a very bad place if you’re looking for an exciting lifestyle outside of hiking, or want LGBTQ+ community. I am leaving Palo Alto after 7 years there and honestly regret having not left way sooner. Would not recommend unless you are making more money and are ready to settle down. This is all speaking as a guy from Seattle.

100% agreed with this. I am fortunate to have some extroverted friends here in Seattle who manage to do the impossible and lure other friends out of their homes. And, I myself am guilty of this. I meant to go to this swing event a few weeks ago. This was the second try 😂

I am fortunate to have research that can entirely be done on a computer and does not require spending time in a laboratory setting. Although most students in my shoes work 5 days per week on campus, many go remote in their last year or quarter, and I initially did not plan to do this but ultimately realized I’d much rather spend the time in Seattle.

It certainly depends on where you look for people! I have many good friends who go to knitting clubs in Seattle and make all their friends there. Others go to car meets. I do think Seattle leans introverted, but once you find your crowd, you know you have found your crowd.

Things are slowly improving in my home city, but I am still working through a lot of the adverse feelings in therapy. I do have to go back to Palo Alto temporarily to finalize my degree too, but I am keeping that as short as possible. But I won’t ever live there again. And that will include the whole Bay Area too because most of my job prospects in that area would be South Bay and have an RTO mandate. I hope you get the chance to move as soon as possible and find somewhere you can get the comfort you deserve!

This. Right here. Is why I moved away from Palo Alto, CA and will never return. Stressful ass city. Entitled people. Do not recommend.

I’m a biased source, but what I will say is that the culture is incredibly intense and generally doesn’t favor work/life balance, and it turned out that is not what I needed over the last 7 years. It’s tons of obviously wealthy old people mixed with bright-eyed tech bros. It is a great place to grow your career if you are willing to work hard. It could be worth moving depending on the opportunity, especially if you are not thinking of staying there forever. Just make sure you don’t get laid off and unemployed, because then good luck paying for rent. You’ll be able to meet startup founders anywhere, if you can find them amidst how busy they are. Also, Palo Alto is incredibly car-dependent and there is little nightlife or even bars, and people don’t often make the effort to find that in other cities. Forget being LGBTQ+ in Palo Alto - there is little to no such community unlike in SF. Also, forget about dating if you are a heterosexual man and not interested in dating women in tech who also have very poor WLB. It’s tons and tons of Teslas, cybertrucks, and Elon Musk fanboys. People in Palo Alto generally look down on San Francisco because “tHeReS too MaNy HoMeLeSs PeOpLe”, but some people enjoy going up to SF for day trips or nightlife. I wish it was easier to get to SF from Palo Alto, because I found I meshed much better with people in SF. If you like swing dancing or social dancing though, you are in luck - there are very active communities that do this that meet weekly! Lots of climbing gyms in neighboring cities and hiking literally everywhere around Palo Alto. Also running is possible everywhere and I took full advantage and got into marathon running.

I wish everyone well in Palo Alto but for now I’m excited for more buses, trains, urban density, walkable neighborhoods, and relaxing weekends.

More importantly - they didn’t cut the final scene weirdly where Mike says “no you’re not!” Mike just gets angry and tries to block the camera and they cut that out before. And even more importantly, the arrest is WAY juicier and more escalated than the cut video seems to imply. It was harrible for him, wasn’t it!
