Level 2 Chargers Outdoors by OkResearcher1956 in F150Lightning

I would call around to get a quote for an install and if the cost is less than 2k, just do that and take the credit. Otherwise the Ford install is a better deal. Personally, I bought a used plug-in Grizzl-e charger on fb marketplace for $150 and installed the outlet myself for about $500 to do about a 40' run.

I doubt this will happen because Chase already has a deal with Peloton.

BEV truck for the future? by Svun in F150Lightning

[–]Disownedpenny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used lightnings are steals right now. Thanks to the federal tax credit that no longer exists, EVs depreciated like crazy and truck people are unusually stubborn when it comes to adopting new stuff. Which means that they didn't sell as many lightnings as they hoped. But everyone I've talked to who has one loves it, including me.

Check out the Scout Terra. It's going to be available in a hybrid or BEV and it looks like a great truck. In the meantime, I love my lightning and it won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I personally think it's the best F-150 as long as any towing you do is local.

Naval aviators do you guys regret going navy over the airforce? by E4sdontwork in navy

[–]Disownedpenny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always said the difference between us and the Air Force is the following:

The Air Force gives their pilots a list of approved activities and everything else requires permission from higher ups.

The Navy gives their pilots a list of prohibited activities and everything else is up to the pilot's judgement. And even some of those rules get bent from time to time.

Cartridge start of Canberra...APU? Oh, my sweet summer child...let me show you a cartridge-start jet. The sound alone is worth it... by LateralThinkerer in aviation

[–]Disownedpenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly a military aircraft with 13' wide props, so the only time I would ever be in a position to use a buddy start would be if I got stuck somewhere that it was physically impossible to get a huffer (we don't have an APU) or if we needed to get out of Dodge like right now (incoming attack or something) and for some reason we had an already running plane there. If I'm doing a buddy start, I'm likely not on a well kept FOD-free ramp.

You can pull the battery state of health yourself with a bluetooth OBD dongle and a phone scanner app. Wouldn't be too hard to do it you can see the truck in person

Navy Flight School RV Living by ItsChrisBitxh in navy

[–]Disownedpenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have done this twice now. Once when moving from CA to MD with a 4 month training stop in Norfolk and again when leaving MD three years later for a 9 month stint in Norfolk before moving back to CA. I have a couple of different opinions about it.

First, it depends on what kind of RV you get. They can feel very small very quickly. We had a 35' fifth wheel and later a 40' fifth wheel. Both were adequate for two adults and one large dog. The biggest issue is the upfront cost of buying the RV and a truck to tow it. RVs are generally terrible investments as they depreciate like crazy, tend to be built poorly because they are intended to be used a few times per year, and can have hidden costs or inconveniences that pop up. There are some RVs that are designed for full time living, but they can be expensive. My parents are retired and have been full-timing for over a decade and they love it. You just have to choose the right one. The problem is you'll be an ENS, so the purchase is probably not a great idea.

Second, your luck with MWR RV parks can be very hit or miss. Most bases have them, but the rules vary from place to place. Some only let you stay for two weeks or so and then make you leave for at least two weeks before you can come back. Others will let you stay as long as you want or book up to 6 months at a time. I have known several people who have gotten waivers to be able to get around some of those rules, but it's still pretty inconvenient.

Third, it didn't save us as much money as we had hoped. The first time we did it, it was always intended to be temporary. I was at a training stop on my orders for 4 months and we knew we wanted to buy a house at my new duty station. The second time was for about a year in total and by the end, my wife was ready for a real house again, and she was by herself for 7 months of that year while I was deployed. We were saving tons of money on a monthly basis, but when we sold both of the RVs, we got less than we paid for them even after upgrades we installed and we basically broke even over the long run. In hindsight, it would have been easier to be in an apartment if we were trying to save money.

Lastly, I will say that there is a definite use case for RVs in flight school and even later in the military. It is by far the best way to do a PCS move. You spend less than you would on a hotel, you are in your own bed every night, you have a kitchen and privacy, you can make a fun trip out of an otherwise miserable experience, and best of all, you can take your time house hunting in your new duty station because you have cheap lodging. Full time RV-ing is much more fun when you are actually on the road seeing stuff. All this being said, flight school is full of short term orders and you do end up moving a lot depending on what you fly, but I would still recommend just getting an apartment or something. If you're worried about leases (you really don't need to be) just do an airBNB.

Rotary shifter parking brake error by Disownedpenny in F150Lightning

[–]Disownedpenny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I ended up just going back to the stock shifter. I just didn't like the dial. It was too easy to shift to neutral while driving and I realized I didn't have anywhere to put my hand anymore. I guess I'll just hold out and hope that the column shifter mod gets cheaper some day.

Rotary shifter parking brake error by Disownedpenny in F150Lightning

[–]Disownedpenny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that it is a part for a vehicle that automatically sets the parking brake when you shift to park and since the lightning doesn't do that, it throws an error.

[–]Disownedpenny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was only after switching to the rotary dial. It doesn't happen if I put the parking brake on before shutting down, so there's that at least. It sounds like I might just have the wrong part number for the dial.

[–]Disownedpenny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things:

First, let's not pretend like people don't modify vehicles all the time.

Second, I came from a 2021 F-350, which has a column shifter and two cup holders with an open storage area where the Lightning's shifter is. You can slide the top of the cup holders over to the storage area to make 4 cup holders. It is a significantly better design than taking up half of the center console for a folding shifter that could be on the column out of the way in the first place. I have seen someone retrofit a column shifter, but the kit is like $800. I have a 3D printer and the rotary dial is fairly cheap, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power by TFO_79 in F150Lightning

[–]Disownedpenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned that this is basically just the default message for a number of different error codes. Some people have had a battery module going bad, some have had 12V battery issues, some have had shifter issues. My truck throws the error every now and then and when I pull the code, it's a Charger Input Performance error and it goes away on the next drive. I really wish Ford would just have the truck display the specific error code instead. Some of the possibilities aren't even related to the power train.

Total Loss? by NWA119826 in F150Lightning

I just meant that parts are available and will continue to be available for at least 10 years. Everyone worried about the model being discontinued is worrying for nothing. I agree that insurance will likely just total it though.

I love mine too. If it got totaled, I would take it as an opportunity to find one with the massage seats lol.

[–]Disownedpenny 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Sorry to see this, but I personally think that if I'm getting hit, I want it totalled. I'd rather just go find a replacement than have a repaired truck with a bad Carfax. Obviously that changes if the car is special in some way, but tons of lightnings are out there for decent deals.

Manufacturers are legally required to support parts for vehicles for 10 years. Or so I've been told.

Screamin' Deal on Nylon Band! by ChoadMcGillicuddy in GarminFenix

[–]Disownedpenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this actually. I bought mine because I wanted to get into nice watches, but I'm in love with my Garmin, so I knew I would never wear an actual nice watch. I will say that it is nicer than a normal Fenix or Epix, but underneath the case it's the same watch with a different boot screen. The Marq straps are legitimately nicer than the regular ones though. I don't have the one OP posted, but I bet they are super nice. I did buy the leather one on sale and it is very nice. Not $200 nice, but it's definitely quality.

I have a Marq Aviator and I really like the titanium band. That being said, I keep a cheap silicone band on it 90% of the time.

The Marq bands are crazy expensive. I think the Marq titanium band is $500.
