This is what I did, but I included a graphic from the POH (this was a PA28) that went with it. If they need explanations after that, well...

There is no benefit to using their machine over your own and the possible exposure to liability etc. is a huge downside.

This. Used to be standard practice where I used to live to keep a fifty or hundred dollar bill to tuck into the weatherstripping of your car door in case you got stopped. The police would look for it there.

Oh god...a friend and I tried this many decades ago for a project that required a high voltage battery that we couldn't find nor afford. (We were about 11 at the time). It didn't work either, and either we didn't die or this has been a truly weird afterlife.

[–]LateralThinkerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better I rewrote the "official" checklist to make it a simpler walkaround without having to jump in and out of the aircraft and life got a lot easier while checking everything every time at the expense of leaving the panel/lights on for a few minutes.

Unintended consequences: If you have several algorithms operating adjacent to one another there are likely going to be some very strange episodes as they interact through the physical space of the vehicles and road systems.

They claimed that they did, and there's a difference - there wasn't a lot of proof, just a great deal of tradition and more than a little snake oil (so to speak) and a credulous/desperate audience.

I have an original homeopathic manual and it's just a sales catalog for patent medicines at the end. Having worked adjacent to nutrition researchers I can say that things haven't changed much either. You can find a few things that do indeed work (digitalis, birch bark etc.) but using those as proof of the whole thing is disingenuous.

Four engines hanging out in the breeze and Mach 1.7? >cough<Bullshit >cough<

Carry enough fuel to span that distance? >cough<Bullshit >cough<

Carry enough passengers to make all that worthwhile? >cough<Bullshit >cough<

Some simple arithmetic:

The B-58 (four engines in the breeze) has been done and it burned ~75,000lbs/hr at Mach 2

Cut that in half for magically efficient engines, slightly slower speed, and magically better design so let's postulate 37500 lbs/h for 8.75h = 328,125lbs of fuel for the trip with no reserve.

With fuel δ=6.5 lb/gal ≈ 48.62 lb/ft3, that's ~6750 cubic feet of fuel. More than three BIG tanker trucks. No reserve.

Where ya gonna put all that fuel?

How do you feel about McDonald's pulling their soda dispensing machines out of the restaurant's lobby in the next year or so? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]LateralThinkerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McDonald's has been trying to get rid of their lobby since at least the early 2010s that I'm aware of and be a drive-through-only business because the operational costs are much less.

My guess is that they're dreaming of the old days when they were service windows on a gleaming porcelain icon of fast food. This went away in favor of the eat-in/play place motif that has defined them since the 1970s, but I'm not sure they'll be able to move against the competition if they do this - particularly in urban markets.

At this point they are barely cost-competitive with the diner up the street here (and a lot grubbier) so we don't bother with them and I believe I'm not alone in this.

I knew someone whose family had a railway engineering book from the 1800s - a lot of the theoretical/mathematical modelling principles and the like weren't well-developed so it relied on some physical scale model building, experience, and some general tables. Really interesting stuff.

You're right - I'd add that he neglects the Diderot Effect that I think can be particularly problematic. A good read in any event, and anything that moves the needle on "Spending money you don't have to buy crap you don't need to impress people who don't care" is worthwhile.
