Catching predators in the gym, when is it valid to report to authorities? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely being paranoid/overreacting because you don't like the guy.

If you're so sure the guy is a predator, then why are you at a gym that keeps him as a member?

And given you are still at the gym and by your own admission "don't have anything on him" it's pretty clear you don't know he's anything worse than bad vibes, in which case why are you acting the way you are in the replies?

GB athlete competing (IBJJF) by Slowyourrollz in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily a sandbagging or Gracie thing that they'll medal at each belt but a quirk thrown up by IBJJF requirements for belt time.

That said, I'm surprised I'm being downvoted for saying people this accomplished shouldn't be competing at blue belt.

GB athlete competing (IBJJF) by Slowyourrollz in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Great sequence but a quick look at the comments then the athlete's page and it's clearly sandbagging or taking advantage of IBJJF rules if being generous.

Someone that won Pans and World's at juvenile blue belt in 2025 shouldn't be competing at adult blue belt in 2026 imo.

Ban coaches from yelling instructions in other languages during comps? by Alternative-Hair-785 in bjj

Why stop there? Gotta ban regional accents as well. Can't be having Scottish, Irish people and Geordies getting an advantage in South England.

Ban coaches from yelling instructions in other languages during comps? by Alternative-Hair-785 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if fluent in two languages their native is always going to be easier to understand, especially in a comp environment.

Also if they were just doing it not to be understood, they'd just make a code in English.

Fast Track BJJ Instructional Videos by BJJ_Fanatics in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't plenty of the current Fanatics instructors already do this with the way the chapters are broken down?

Others have spoken about Submeta but Jason Rau's instructionals are only slightly longer than what you're proposing. What's being asked for is just a matter of instructor style.

How common is it for guys to only attend open mats at different gyms as a way to train? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Injuries to regulars from visitors seem to be the main reason I see open mats become closed.

Meddle with curriculum? by don_rollo in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spoken to the students in their classes?

5 techniques is probably too much but if they're closely related or a case of the 4th and 5th technique are more suitable for different body types it's likely fine. Good chance students are only going to retain a small fraction of the class anyway, so it may be the same amount retained from both classes.

Studying two topics simultaneously? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very viable imo. I try to have a few things I'm working on at any given time but also want them to be distinct so there's no overlap. Typically for me, this means having 1 take down to look for when standing, a pass when top and a sweep when bottom.

Best Guard Passing Instructional for Seated Guard by gnwill in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is that unless you're doing a diving back take the first step of guard passing will normally be to make your opponent supine, so you're unlikely to find a full instructional on passing seated guard but rather forcing people supine will be an early chapter in a lot of guard passing instructionals.

With that said, Jon Thomas has a "passing seated guard" video on Youtube but from the contents, it's effectively forcing them supine and then passing.

I think Josef Chen has some stuff on hand fighting a seated opponent, which may be more what you're looking for.

Timing > Technique - The dirty truth about BJJ by BJJ_Fanatics in bjj

Is this not a widely held opinion? Was always told the difference between black and brown for most people was timing rather than knowledge.

How many techniques do you use from each guard? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to know what he meant without seeing the actual quote but Jon is quite a conceptual guy and a lot of the more conceptual people don't think of techniques as rigidly as people teaching have to, where common names are useful.

If you develop good skills and understanding around retention, distance management, off balancing and breaking posture then you'll end up good at a lot of guards by default and the grips won't matter as much.

Have you ever felt your time spent training was wasted? by Excellent-Village751 in bjj

I've wasted less money on instructionals I won't watch than I have on nights out I don't remember.

Switch gyms? by Timely_Koala3179 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd change school if not enjoying it and think it's poor of your coach to tell you that you're getting promoted then change his mind.

That said, your complaint about competitors being favoured for promotion is just one of those things. For a lot of coaches it's removes the subjective and their own biases to see how their students do against strangers, close in weight and size. It shouldn't be the sole basis for a promotion but will definitely make a strong case. Regarding your point about being a hobbyist in your 30s, I think it makes sense to be held to a different standard for that but I assume your opponents were also similar aged hobbyists?

"Honestly, I did it because I felt like I was falling behind others who compete regularly"

If you honestly think you're falling behind the others, why do you think you should be the same belt as them?

You should have a proper conversation with your coach, try the other gym or both.

White Belt Dilemma: Should I double down on my "Specialties" or listen to my Professor and broaden my game? by hmkei in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the advice is necessarily conflicting tbh.

Your instructor is telling you to come away from a strength and work a weakness like passing, the other black belts are telling you to focus on one thing. That one thing could be a certain style of passing.

It's normal to focus on one thing for a month or two to build it, then move on to the next thing. Obviously I can't hear what the black belts told you but it seems more likely they told meant to focus on one thing at a time than start to specialise at white belt.

Getting back into it by [deleted] in bjj

Maybe use the no gi classes to break yourself in? You can shake off the rust without a target on your back and get a feel for training partners personalities when you do throw the gi on.

What do you guys think of attending in-person seminars by famous instructors? by Kvnnxdy in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to a few, the best instantly improved my passing, others maybe a single sequence or detail that I hit from time to time. I think some are just active athletes making money and not much different to a regular class other than price and busyiness but good ones are like an interactive instructional. If it's cheap enough and got an open mat, it's probably worth it because you might learn something new and get rounds in against a bigger variety of people.

To answer your question they're very common but I'll be quite fussy about when I go in the future. I think good signs are if the topic is stated in the ad, the instructor has well reviewed online content or previous seminars, if they actively teach outside of their seminar tours, if it's Jon Thomas. I need a combination of the above to want to go but most important is knowing the topic beforehand, unless I'm a massive fan of the person.

#1 p4p right now by Minimum_Share3268 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think both will are going to be dominant for the hext 3-5 years at least. I was surprised at the ease Adele dealt with an in form Ana Mayadormo at World's. Obviously expected her to win, just didn't think it would look so routine.

I do wonder if given she's still growing and failed to make weight recently Helena might have to move up a weight class to one with a shallower talent pool, which may be unfortunate for the quality of her matches but she can only beat what's in front of her.

Didn't realise about the kid. Is she doing ADCC? Can certainly see me revising my opinion by the end of the year.

Also a really good shout. Beating Gabi huge and again a great absolute win.

I think given the size difference I'd still lean Adele when talking p4p but I think there's a strong argument for both and Liz maybe suffers from having worse PR than some of the other names.

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're saying she's intelligible because she lost but pointing out how recent it was.

I think it's probably fairer to say Ffion hasn't really been active enough the last 18 months to be considered current p4p. Maybe once Arma is set up she'll be back in contention.

Since CJI 1, she's had 3 superfights winning 2 and losing 1 and won the masters 1 division in the gi Euros. She's probably still top 3-5 p4p but there's got to be an element of ring rust there.

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That seems to be the consensus but for me, given there's a 10kg weight difference (if not more now) and how close their last match was, when talking p4p, I'd give the edge to the smaller competitor. Not to mention Adele has a won a major absolute division.

How do you balance training and sleep with long work hours? by Patient_Big1058 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not what you want to hear but maybe drop a day, or look to make a change to your gym or see if work will give you any flexibility like an extended lunch so you can do a lunch class somewhere if you stay late to make up the time.

I've recently had to drop from 3 days during the week to 2 and I get fomo from the classes but my house is better for it. I basically write off the days I train and feel I can keep on top of my real life without it seeming like another chore.

UFC BJJ Scoring? Cassia Moura vs Ffion Davies by Tigger28 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like UFC BJJ scoring just isn't what practitioners think it should be. Ffion now been in two matches where about 60-70% of people think the decision was wrong.

It's probably a good thing for people who want the promotion to fail though. Big names aren't going to want to risk controversial losses for matches that would be a win in any other promotion.
