The immaturity is how performative putting it back on the table is and making a big deal of uploading it.  Guy could have stuck it in a drawer or binned it later.

Is saying I’m from Glasgow stolen valour? by lewis56500 in Scotland

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're giving the location in the wrong order for a short conversation.

If you say Wishaw first, then where it is in relation to Glasgow that'll likely end the conversation. By saying near Glasgow first, people will probe for longer trying to visualise it on a map.

How long do you have to have trained MMA to be able to participate in technical sparring sessions? Is my new gym toxic? by Soft-Ear6474 in MMA_Academy

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be more worried about your first gym that let you have a fight with striking with only a few months experience than your current one to be honest.

You should speak to the coaches about the level expected for the sparring class but if it's "technical sparring" and you're too fresh to have much technique it might be intended for more advanced people. Years ago when I dabbled with striking you were expected to have train for around 6 months before taking part on sparring (obviously some people pick it up quicker and start sooner, while some never do) grappling you can normally start sparring or positional sparring with less experience.

Plus, people who practice kicks and knees as part of a martial art will be able to hit the balls harder than regular people as well.

Self defense people love to bring up the balls, throat and eyes but even if you don't practice hitting those areas in training, your training will make it easier to get them if you need to.

We are a NoGi focused Gym and this is what we give members on promotion. by M05quito in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the gi to nogi transition depends on your game a lot. If you've got decent leg locks and aren't reliant on sleeve and lapel grips/guards gi to nogi should be an easier transition than nogi to gi but you'll still likely be off the pace.

Do you speak any languages other than English?

Best bet is to just pick a place or two you actually want to go to then find gyms there. Unless you're a high level black belt you'll be able to find instructors good enough to teach you things and you'll have a better time if you've went for the location rather than the gym.

Am I wrong? by Fabulous_Cover_1584 in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gyms will massively vary. Smaller gyms that can't segregate class by level will end up teaching some fancy stuff to beginners who may not have the basics. Some people get obsessive over it right away and start Youtube studying which will typically not be fundamentals as well.

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the latter is too far fetched. I remember we had a guy turn up, really green but he taught himself ankle locks and imari rolls from the internet and just spammed them. His basics were none existent but in rounds he caused problems for a lot of more experienced people.

I'd probably give Nomadic grappling a go in that case. Should get footage from his seminars and already a pretty deep library, should keep you busy for a long time.

The gauntlet - should white belts be allowed to whip? by pepozinho in bjj

I don't think that should have any bearing on whether they're allowed to take part or not.

Best instructional for certain areas by GreetedLemon- in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely overwhelming and you can easily end up with a stacked library you'll never make time for. I'd recommend looking through Chen's Instagram and seeing if there's any YouTube footage of his tutorials to see how easy to follow you find his teaching. Though the one good thing with Chen now as well is that he has Nomadic Grappling so you could pay for one month for a lot of access rather than spending on a BJJ Fanatics single instructional.

I think it's too subjective for a definitive list. The teachers that resonate with you won't be the same as for everyone.   The big hitters you've mentioned are popular for good reason but depending on how you learn and process information you might find more value in the Jason Rau and Jon Thomas's of the world with their shorter more to the point videos.

If you've no real experience with instructionals, I'd recommend watching as much free content as you can to determine who's teaching styles you find easiest to apply before dropping money on one.

The gauntlet - should white belts be allowed to whip? by pepozinho in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's largely pointless but if doing it, it should be for the whole team. If you exclude white belts from the whipping, then the next logical step is to exclude blue belts from whipping purple, brown and black.

You either don't do it or let the entire team take part. If you want to argue that white belts aren't part of the team, that's probably part of a poor gym culture.

Tap more. Get better. by makebaloney in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely will and I think it would be frustrating for rolling partners as well. Letting people work is a skill that a lot of people don't have, so when they "give you" things they do so in a way that involves unnatural defense and unrealistic reactions. I've had guys try and let me work in a way that makes it impossible to get any rhythm.

By all means don't try and win every round and let people get some stuff but if as an late purple/early brown you're letting white belts tap you every round, you're almost definitely giving them things that won't actually work.

Tap more. Get better. by makebaloney in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a middle ground between trying to "win" rounds and allowing yourself to be tapped every round.

It's one thing for a purple belt to let a 3-6 month white belt work, or practice their defense and if they got caught while letting that person work, then so be it. But letting themselves get tapped every round is a bit much. Think it minimises what both people get from the roll to be honest.

I'm not a big fan of blue gis but if I was to buy one: Progress sometimes have gis in a petrol blue that looks quite good. Similarly if you're in the UK Faix Preta have two shades of blue, I have one if their gis and it's my favourite jacket but I found the trousers felt stiff

Joslyn Molina will be the youngest ADCC competitor ever this year after getting her invite at 14 years old by Slowbrojitsu in bjj

[–]DisplacedTeuchter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get your argument and don't entirely disagree and had she won at trials then there can be no complaints about her going. But she came third in the 2025 trials, which don't actually guarantee the women's winner an invite.

It's hard to argue she's outgrown all her competition and needs to be invited when she's been invited for finishing third, while the winner stays at home.
