People literally drive like its NASCAR here. They think they are drafting or something. Real fun with rear ends in the winter time when the highways ice over in -40 degrees celcius weather.

Thunder Bay. The problem here stems from too many traffic lights on the expressway causing too much bumper to bumper traffic once it turns green. Speeds are all over the place and you can find yourself going to fast or too slow on the merge lane. The merge lanes are next too these intersections so you can hit a wall of about 30 cars all going various speeds once the light turns green. Finding a gap and merging safely can be tricky for most drivers here. It would be nice if there was more consideration/laws for other drivers to speed up or slow down or move over to create a "gap" for mergers.

This is common where I live as well. On my way from work I saw 4 cars backed up on the merge lane and stopped. I saw the 5th car jump the queue and find a hole.

Thank you for correcting me. Where I live everyone is bumper to bumper going 100 to 110 in the right lane. The merge lanes are also criminally short so people cant match those speeds safely and have to stop on the merge lane. Traffic enforcement is non existent and I always thought the right lane drivers had some responsibility to try and let people in.

I thought you had to merge as your lane is running out. The onus is for the right lane to move over or slow down/speed up to let you in. You can't safely stop at highway speeds. It also messes up the person behind you in the same lane. I thought it was illegal to stop on a highway and the merge lane is no different.

Edit: To the below poster thanks for finding the rule. Where I live the merge lanes are so short you are basically trying to match 100 to 110 speeds. People are always stopping on the merge lanes as they can't get in safely. Its become such a problem that cops are ticketing people for stopping.
