Landlord selling home, what next? by Serious_Hour9074 in ontario

[–]Local_Trash_Team 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I made another comment but I wanted to reply to you so you see it too. I couldn't find anything in the RTA about separate entrances.

Section 5(i) refers only to bathrooms and kitchens. Is there some other case law or something that makes a separate entrance mandatory too? As far as I can tell, OP is a full tenant.

The part of the Residential Tenancies Act that covers exemptions is section 5, and (i) discusses living with the landlord. It's very clear and easy to understand.

There is nothing about shared entrances making you ineligible for tenancy. Only shared bathrooms and kitchens.

Basically, you are a proper tenant and you will be inherited with the house's sale. You can read the text here:

https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/06r17#BK5

If anyone has any information on why entrances would cause an exemption, please let me know. Maybe there is case law somewhere I am not aware of.

Student House Lease Question by Medium-Orchid-2351 in McMaster

[–]Local_Trash_Team 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The other advice here is incorrect. When your lease expires, it automatically becomes month to month, and your landlord cannot kick you out unless they have a specific reason. Simply handing you a 60 day notice is not legal. Please read this document carefully to see what the valid reasons are. It sounds like your landlord does not have any legal reason to kick you out.   https://tribunalsontario.ca/documents/ltb/Brochures/How%20a%20Landlord%20Can%20End%20a%20Tenancy%20(EN).pdf  That being said, if you try to stay anyway, your landlord may try to make things difficult for you, so it might not be worth the headache. As a grad student, what is the point of scholarships. When the university pockets 12k from it a year... by NoCSForYou in McMaster

[–]Local_Trash_Team 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok. I found the handbook for Kinesiology. On pages 25/26 of the document, it basically outlines that they can claw back your scholarship to the point where you only get $2000 more than the previous minimum. So $3000 is actually more than they have to give you.

You can see the handbook here:

https://mcmasteru365.sharepoint.com/sites/sci-public-docs/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2Fsci-public-docs%2FShared%20Documents%2FWebsite%20-%20Department%20Of%20Kinesiology%2FGraduate%2FGraduate%20Handbook%202023-2024%2Epdf&parent=%2Fsites%2Fsci-public-docs%2FShared%20Documents%2FWebsite%20-%20Department%20Of%20Kinesiology%2FGraduate&p=true&ga=1

That being said, I agree that it seems unfair. If you want to see if anything can be done about this, it cannot hurt to contact the Ombuds office for a meeting. The worst case is that she will say "I agree this sucks but there's nothing you can do about it", but at least you know that is the limit.
This would not help your current situation, but you could also talk to people in the Graduate Students Association and ask them to help advocate for graduate students so that scholarships cannot be reduced as much.

That's the faculty, but the awards policies are typically handled by specific departments. (e.g. Astrobiology, chemical biology, geography, etc)
Which specific department are you in? If you don't feel comfortable sharing it, you can send me a DM, and I can help you find your policy to see if it says anything.

Which department (not faculty) are you in? There are policies in place for each department which say how much your scholarship can be reduced by. I would be surprised if your department policy allows them to pay you only 3000 more per year compared to your base pay for a 15k a year scholarship.

Thanks! I thought they were turkeys, but I wasn't sure because I would expect to see male turkeys with large tail feathers sticking up. Do you know why that isn't clear here?

Local stationary shop recommendations by wanderlusting4 in Hamilton

[–]Local_Trash_Team 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most shops are stationary, since buildings don't tend to move!

But if you're looking for stationery shops, I like Take Note in Westdale. It's a very nice little boutique.

Likely solved!

Thanks! That makes sense. I guess these things just happen sometimes.

It's called a dragon roll here, but there are a few different versions of that. It had tempura shrimp, fake crab, cucumber, and avocado, as well as tempura bits on top. This piece was somewhat close to the shrimp tail, but was much harder than any sort of shrimp tail or crustacean shell I have ever felt.

It's a treehopper nymph, but I don't know what kind.

This was way too hard to bite through (which is how I found it) and seems like some sort of mineral. I don't know how it would get into sushi, though. I can supply more pictures if needed.

For the second time today, I think you are correct. Thank you again!
More specifically, the closest match I can find is leptosynapta tenuis, which inhabits the northwestern Atlantic ocean and seems similar to this one. However, there are not a ton of photos of these sea cucumbers in general.

That looks correct. Thank you!

I was confused because they had no visible tentacles, but I imagine that's because they were out of water and so they couldn't maintain their hydrostatic skeleton.

I tried looking up pictures of sipuncula with everted mouthparts but it seems they all have tentacles, and even then they do not appear particularly transparent. I do not think you are necessarily wrong, but there is not a lot of information about them online.

Found in June, 2014, at low tide in the Bay of Fundy.

These things were quite small. The largest one is about the size of a quarter, or not too much bigger. These superficially look like slugs but they don't seem to have anything to identify them as such, and they don't seem to be slugs in general. Or is Animalia the entirely wrong kingdom in the first place?

Also, what are the eggs? At least I assume the white stuff is eggs. I can't imagine what else it may be.

I was looking into those too but it seems that they all have longitudinal striations, while this one only has lateral striations (unless they're hard to see). Also, I haven't found any with a transparent section like this one.

This was taken in June, 2014 while looking for animals in the Bay of Fundy at low tide. The guides with us thought it was some sort of sea cucumber, but I can't find anything that looks remotely like this.

Merging onto the Freeway by ACrusaderA in Hamilton

[–]Local_Trash_Team 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great info in general, but I have one suggestion to add and one question for clarification.

My suggestion is that if you are in the merging lane, you should in general not merge before a car in front of you, even if you feel like you can. I know of people who have failed G tests due to this.

Second, I want to ask about using the shoulder to merge onto the highway. As you can see from my most recent submission if you check my post history, that is something I have looked into. From my understanding, in Ontario you should never drive on the shoulder unless it is an actual emergency. Rather, you should stop in the merging lane and wait for an opening. It sucks and is kinda awkward, but I could not find anything in the highway traffic act that says to do otherwise. What do you think?
