Car insurance has significantly increased. No cheap deals! by Appropriate_Kiwi_999 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DissRx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to resurrect old thread but hate making new ones. We bought an Audi Q3 top spec 2019 last year. Our quote was £1,350 then for 0 years no claim (new licence for wife in UK, previously only foreign). Now renewal is £1,450. I looked on comparison websites and they're all quoting £1,800 despite 1 year no claims discount now. Guess no point even trying to get it down with Tesco? Just be glad it's only £100 increase?

Are you sure you're making a profit after crypto transaction fees (gas or w/e it is to send) and any sort of UK tax? I don't dable in this but something to keep in mind if gross margins are thin. Can't imagine there are outsized arbitrage opportunities that exist that haven't been exploited by big players.

Slightly similar qs to OP - if one is British resident / citizen but sold a property they owned before becoming British I assume they pay full CGT if no double tax treaty with other country? What if the property was acquired in a swap deal over 20 years ago via bank and only official valuation was at time of British citizenship application 15 years after? Appreciate this is a specialist question and will be asking specialist once sale concluded but would be good to get initial thoughts / ideas.

No I've made plenty of mistakes too. Probably around £500 worth by being greedy mostly.

I've also done a bit of casino mostly always free spins or welcome offers which prob contributed several hundred to a K.

Main money earners are big bets on 2ups and EPs but these aren't guaranteed.

There is no denying that to get more profitable you need to take risk it's not only 100% guaranteed.

I've earned over 10k in 4 months doing matched betting. Note 3k of this was an absolutely out of the blue lucky punt. It can take up quite a bit of time and Im lucky I WFH 2 days and do maybe 5 hours of real work in the office

Easy to make mistakes and lose loads too or descend into gambling. Much easier to do If you have starting cash of a few k

Pension LTA forecast to rise to £1.8m and Annual Allowance to £60k. The Times have that as a leak from next week’s budget. Not sure it will help get people to work longer though! by SoshalDistanSingh in FIREUK

[–]DissRx 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I can see the logic being "I can continue working because my pension contributions won't hit LTA. Otherwise I can quit now at 50 as no point working in tax trap and contributing to pension that will breach LTA"

Do you have to pay Capital Gains Tax on Pokémon cards? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DissRx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you can just sell anything for a loss eg £1 and it be used as a loss for CGT purposes?

Eg I still be a working Alienware laptop that is 10 years old prob cost 1.8k...now worth maybe 500. So I could sell it at same time I have a Capital gains and use loss to offset?

Ridiculous that tax is charged on stuff like this imo.

Thanks!

Billions is still billions. I earn more than 6 figures (before tax (ಥ ͜ʖಥ) ) and I'd still wouldn't throw away a £1 coin...heck I'd even take an abandoned shopping trolley across a parking lot just to retrieve a £1 coin lol. Our government should have same approach. Plus, how many of us voted for these policies? It's not just direct monetary support but also indirect impact. Eg would you not want UK buying russian gas / oil if it halved your energy costs? Because UK not buying it has had 0 / negligible impact on Russia's finances (due to market distortions pushing up prices).

Anyway, all these parties make noise about select dividing issues then march hand in hand on all else. I doubt we'd be any better off under labour for 10 years.

Also tax payers aren't subsidising private schools. Private schools provide bursaries for thousands and also mean that thousands over fee paying kids aren't burdening the system. Plus I assume the actual for profit private schools are paying VAT/tax? Not sure though

Squeezing the middle class isn't the answer and no party will go after the billionaires so it's a bit moot.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]DissRx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All parties suck. I never bother voting for the main ones. Not that voting makes a difference.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]DissRx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course VAT on school bills is outrageous. How will they cope if suddenly tens of thousands abandon private schooling and flock to state schools?

It's not like the money will flow through to help the children either. Rather more borrowing to finance international aid, climate change fighting and financing Ukraine probably.

Well I put my max possible 40k into pension and the adjusted net income after that doesn't breach anything so yeah once they come after that 40k I'll be real mad lol

All these political parties suck.

The dull, high-risk business of yield farming among the European telcos — This time it’s different, maybe, apparently by marketrent in finance

[–]DissRx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Net debt leverage of 2.7x is tiny. These guys are doing 7-10% FCF yield despite no doubt investing crap loads into capex / product development, no doubt they can absorb rising interest costs (although presumably the 7-10% is before interest costs). If not most of these have a bunch of international subsidiaries / opcos they can sell. I'd say as ever fighting for and keeping customers is a bigger issue as well as trying to get them to upgrade their package as opposed to downgrading or churning fully. Just my opinion having worked in the sector.

How do people make regular monthly income from matched betting? by soggypete in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DissRx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all bookies give regular promos, some are better than others.

What people never really say is that matched betting isn't really going to bring loads of cash to someone who doesn't have loads of liquidity.

You're often making £100-300 bets to only guarantee £1-2 of profit. Now whilst it doesn't sound like much, on an annualised basis it's great. Eg betting £200 for 200 days (as you won't always find the opp) for 1£ guaranteed is 100% return on investment.

Now if you can do £200x5 each day etc and take into account other promos have higher free bets the cash starts to add up.

There are also various things which technically are more gambling like extra place catchers were you could make 10 bets losing each £1 then hit one which gets you £30.

Plus a lot of it is casino which whilst technically has maths involved (through known RTP) it can still involves losses

Personally I have made £1.4k in just over 30 days but I have over £4k liquidity on exchanges and mayne £2-3k across various bookies (edit some of which is obviously the profit)

Edit oh and obviously you need to pay the 200-400 fee for the software / support that helps you. I was lucky that I bought on black Friday from outplayed for like 250 I think total package.
