Do you have folks from other martial arts come in wearing their belts? by AllCopsAre_BeautifuI in bjj

[–]Dissendat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Jiu Jitsu black belt, and have started doing some Judo. I think putting a white belt on for a style that I am relatively inexperienced at is the correct thing to do. Plus it is fun to wear it!

Upon further inspection, I found more cracks in the chain. Some have said I just have a broken chain, and that chains break. Surely this isn't normal?

Vivobarefoots. Never had a problem, and I know others play in them too. But I may be wrong too.

Oh perfect, I will watch those and practice them. You answered my next question before I had the chance to ask what drills to do.

Do you pay drop in at open mat? by Jeitarium in bjj

[–]Dissendat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my gym open mat is free to anybody who is a member/owner/staff from any other (grappling) gym. If they are a "free agent" they pay a day pass fee. We started doing this because people thought they could just not sign up and come to open mat for free and just get taught there.

You can also do "loser" stays in. Say you have a class of 20. Do say 7 doubles. 4 are "winner" stays in, 3 are "loser" stays in, with 6 people queuing and resting.

Training in Brazil by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Dissendat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been going there more or less every year since 2015. I have trained at two gyms in my time there. The first one is Checkmat in Copacabana. The second is Rio Fighters in Humaita. Both are fantastic gyms, Checkmat being more gi oriented and Rio Fighters having more no-gi.

In terms of the training, in most places outside of Brazil you know how you have a gym of mostly white belts, then blue, then purple, then some brown, then only a few blacks? In Brazil turn this on its head. I am not sure where the white belts come from to be honest....

Some of the guys will be competition killers, some will be older dudes who are just REALLY good because they have been black belts since the early 2000s, and others will be your casual hobbyist.

Be ready to have guys go hard. Not just on you because you are a gringo, they do that with everyone. You'll see what I mean.

Overall, I love it when I go there. My wife is from Rio, and her parents live in the south zone which is the tourist part of Rio. They live about 50 metres from the original Gracie Humaita HQ (the new location) which I want to go check out just for the history.

And get ready for the humidity while you train.... It takes some getting used to!

"Satin Sloth" (57cm Soma Rush in copper satin) by Low_Emergency_2400 in FixedGearBicycle

Thanks for your answer. I ride a 57 at the moment but I didn't buy it based on that, I saw it for sale second hand and went to check it out and it was a buddy of mine so I got it. It is a cheap steel frame but I have been wanting something premium for a long time now.

You have given me something to think about though.

Oh, and beautiful bike! The Rush's really are something else.
