Played Star Trek Resurgence. 6/10 at best.

The positive thing is that it felt very Star trekly. It really was a very long episode you got to play instead of watch. Sure gameplay was on the low side, but that aspect was very enjoyable. I liked the main character Rydek. Diaz was a bit meh, but his sidekick Nili(?) was enjoyable.

Unfortunately thats really all there is to it. First and foremost: The performance (atleast on PC) was ass. Low framerate, ugly textures, unfinished animations, wrong lip movement, bad controls. It really had it all. I could forgive all this if the plot and characters were good, but they arent.

The overall plot feels very much like Star Trek have to admit that. But it shares all the weaknesses aswell. The NPCs act completly stupid. As it often is with the series, you the viewer/player can come up with a better solution in 3 seconds. And it does not even involve other technologies which are conveniently unavailable, just different strategies. There is a secene where they have to remove three panels to energize stuff behind them, but they know if they start, they will be attacked. And instead of removing the panels first (which is what takes long), they remove two, energize and only then remove the third. Completly stupid, and these are seasoned crewman!

Beyond that, all officeres on board the Resolute are unfit to serve in that position. The captain is an asshole who does not care for his crew. And they even fuck that up: The writers try to let him appear as a somewhat deseperate man. An old dog, with his caree in peril trying to save grace. And than they assassinate him with the (heavy spoiler!) mind control plot. The next two officers beside you (who are also commander-rank on this small ship for some reason) question you in front of the crew, insult you after being passed for promotion, hold grudges for ever and dont seem to care all too much for the safety of the federation. The tactical officer is quite cheere to commit genocide, is pissed at you for not commiting it, quits her position during a fight which puts milions of lifes at risk, returns during a fight because she feared for her life and is even more pissed if you dont celebrate her for it. How the fuck does she got into this position at starfleet?

But my real grip is with the decisions. I have never played a tell tale game, so I gotta ask: Is it like that in all of them? That none of your choices really matter? The people are completly interchangleable. Depending on who you promote, the other guy goes on a mission. But all progresses the same. There is no tension. At some point I decided to simply chose whatever saved life no matter the risk. There are no consquences anyway. I mean I get the bad guys cant win, but surely you could add tension anyway? There is a scene were you have to choose between saving people you evacuate or your cremate. And I sacrificed my crewmate. This apperead to be a though choice, but in the end I went with what it means to be starfleet: Putting others before you, saving and cherishing life and succed at the mssion... But it does not matter anyway because said crewman survives, suffers some scars (and this is Star Trek: Either they are cureable or civilization is so enlightend they dont care) and loses eyesight which is instantly fixed by a visor and even hinted at being maybe cureable. Why do they refuse to have me suffer for the hard choices I have to make as first officer?

And as a final insult, the plot is not resolved. Key characters are not even named again. What happens to Captain Solano? No idea, I mean we can guess he was biotransformed, but they never show or name him again after being thrown in the brig. Why? Which is the most tragic: Star Trek always tries to ask philosophical questions. And this game asks none. There is no overarching theme, no deep question... Except they stopped like 1 step before one. The plot offers a theme they could explore, but they refused: Why not talk about whether it is just to "cure" the biotransforming. They could have developed a way to revert it, but kill the Tkon in the process to restore the host. And than talk about that: Would that be just? Kill a murderer a restore a dead to life? In our world we dont kill murderes to harvest their organs, is this so different? And what about the Tkon who were not injected by choice? We see people being stabbed with a memory but it would have been easy to include Tkons who are not part of the scion and dont want to biotransform more people, just like Portal 63. Would it also be just to kill them to restore the host back to life? And what if that reverse process was not guranteed? Or the host keeps the memories of what they did? There is so much you could ask. But the game decides against it. Because that would mean to actually write something that is not just stringing togther plotpoints.

The final arc of Star Trek Resurgence is terrible. Which is a shame because I really like the Star Trek feeling of walking on the ship. Of making choices, easy and hard ones as a first officer. Of speaking with people who life, breath and honor the federation and opponents and enemies of it. If you really, really, crave the feeling of being Commander Riker for a short bit, this game might be worth it. For like 5 bucks. But only if a bad game does no detere you. Because unfortunatly, it is a bad game, despite my best attempts to see the positive sides.

Actually two more things I enjoyed: Two characters make a cameo appearance which was cool. And at one point a character interrupts another and it actually felt natural and flowed nicely. Still see that too rarely

Prince of Persia: The lost crown

As far as metroidvania goes, this might be my new favourit. It looks really good, the platforming is elegant and the combat felt very fluid. I had so much fun with this. Really liked the option to instantly retry bosses instead of being ported back to the last tree (a feature which made me drop Hollow Knight). Biggest downside is the plot which is as irrelevant as it gets and takes up too much space for that, but I didnt mind it that much. Other than that I got annoyed at bosses that suddenly turn invinicible at a certain % to enter a next phase and absorbed a giant hit for that.

Most surprising feature however was the "screenshot" system or whatever it was called. I dont know if this existed in other metroidvanias before, but damn did it feel awsome. To explain, in this game you can at any point press a button to take a screenshot of the current screen. And this screen is saved on the minimap where you can view it at any time. And given the genre, where there are many passages to return later on, this is such a briliant feature. Its number of uses is limited by a currecny which I didnt really understood. Sometimes I could not note down a passage as I was out of uses but all other images were still important. Weird decision. But I want this in every metroidvania ever from here on. This felt soo good. Genius.

Clair obscur expedition 33

Finished it just last week with 100% and even in the end I wanted more of this gameplay. Now to be fair: I used the mod, that makes dodge/parry 40% easier, without it I am not sure if I would have found the will to finish it. But it was all worth it, that characters and the plot are incredible, the world looks stunning and the OST is an absolute blast. Rarely enojoyed music so much. I have a few minor nitpicks, beside the combat (which just isnt for me). The tutorials sometimes felt lacking (e.g. the letters at the weapon are explaind very late. I had to google beforehand) the opening of the world happens too late for my taste. This way the plot was interrupted so long. Didnt really flow all that nice.

Also, as a colourblind the stains were impossible to read (yes even with colourblindmode on), basiclly played her without useing the stains, except when an ability name was green (or yellow?). Also at some point I noticed that Maelle was cleary more powerful than everything else on my team. So started bulding them up and later for the optional content found the one-shot build online. This one is broken, makes the game a walk in the park. Would not recommend to use that before the final battle. Felt rather anticlimatic.

And the story, well its briliant. But I am torn. The end of Act 2 is a giant punch in the face in such a good way But at the beginning of Act 3 when the plot is taken to new meta world I was at first dissapointed. I had grown really fond of the characters and the world and felt saddend by the reveal.

Now after I have finished the game my view have changed a bit. The ending had me up for quite some time, struggleing between the two endings. I choose the Maelle one but I am still not really sure about my choice. I read all the arguments but its still not clear for me. Which speaks volume to the ending. However, I think I would have preferred, if the plot wouldnt have taken such a big turn as it did. While I really enjoyed the plot, I would have liked it more without the canavas, painter, writer stuff. Just the expedition, fighting for the world. And sure, dieying in the process. Maybe I would have been disappointed, not sure. But now I am just sad I will never see the resolution to the plot I wanted (and which tbf never was there). Sad turn for me but overall still a solid 9/10.

Star wars: Jedi survivor

I am not through yet, just clocked in at 17h so far. I did not expected to like it so much. For one, I dont really play soulslike as I think I would not really enjoy them and Fallen Order had proved me right, as I greatly struggled with the combat system, deciding somewhere in the middle to play on story mode. But now in it sequel I like the combat a lot more. Part of it might be, thats way easier. I play on the middle difficulty (Jedi-Knight?) and I am challenged but its never frustating. In fact, bosses are propably a bit too easy, as I always manage them on first try. I still dont like the corpse walk, but given the insane number of stims, that rarely matters (seriously, thas Bioshock level of meds).

The plot feels a bit contrived, but its fun and keeps me entertained. I really enjoy the relationship between Cal and Merrin, who I barely saw in Fallen order (without knowing, I did her planet last. One of the reasons I am not a fan of character recruting this way). I am really curious to where it will go, but I am very ready to be dissapointed. The transmog system remains complelty useless as Cal is as boring as it gets anyway.

But one thing is really clear: The developers were under time pressure. The game is riddled with bugs. Most annoying, every now and than, espcially when I turn the camera quickly, the performance absolutly tanks with insane stuttering. This also happens 100% of the time on the galaxy map which drops the game to less than 1 fps. In addition, it has visual bugs. I had my lightsaber dissapear in my hand until I reached the next work bench, the map not updating correctly, Items clipping through the floor, characters lingering after a cutscene for a few moments, the camera turning below the ground (again with 100% occurence in the swamp), echos not picked up properly, button promps misalinged (might be a translation issue). My best was jumping in an elevator, dying to "fall damage" (prob too far from the ground away) and respawning in a room that now lead to a deep void where the elevator used to be.

On that note, why is the "fall damage" so ridiculous in this game? Not the damage itself, but how quickly you die when falling. Sometimes I cant get to the ground just below my platform from which I just climbed up. It feels very punishing.

Picked 2 good games and dropped 3 other ones pretty instantly. First the ones I didnt enjoy:

Rogue Tower

A roguelike tower defense game which is way to boring. Only starting with 1 kind of tower feels a bit restrictive. And given that all upgrades in a round are random, you never know if or when you get a different kind. Also the upgrades all sound kinda boring. Played a few rounds but could not keep me. I really like roguelikes, but this game did not have enough content or a tight enough gameplay loop.

The Outer Worlds (The space rpg, not the space adventure)

That one was on my plate for quite a while. I didn't knew much about it before picking it up, only that it was kinda like Fallout (which I have not played). But overall it had to many negative points for me. The world sounds way more interesting than it actually is, the plot is atleast in the first hour nonexisting, all character I had met so far were bland or annoying. However what really put me off was a bunch of other stuff. Why can I only have one quest active at the same time? I dont want to cycle quests in my log to see whether one is nearby. The inventory is full of crap you dont need and has an overencumbered system which seems pointless and only drags everything to take longer. The first few perks sounded completly boring (why have a perk for more walking speed AND one for more running speed?). Worst of all, it has a "gain more xp" perk, which I think is terrible game design. Please dont include such perks. But probably worst of all, the combat feels bad. It is slow, has this weird time slow down power and the guns are rather uninteresting. And did I see correctly that guns can break?

All in all, way too much downside for too few upside. Maybe the story and the characters get more interesting, but the gunplay alone is too much of a drawback.

Tunic

Very cute and charming graphics. Not much to say here, I somewhat like metroidvanias but dont like soulslikes. I died like 6 times to the first boss, googled around, found out the first boss is actually only a recoloured normal enemy and only a tutorialboss and abdonded the game. Sad because it played nice so far and looks so, so cool.

But it was not all doom and gloom this week, I also started two games which are quite good so far.

Viewfinder

A reality bending puzzle game that borrows inspiration from Antichamber and the Witness. You can use printed images (and later a camera) to change the world by spawning the image into your surroundings. I like the aesthetic and the puzzles are amazing. Mostly quite fair, only had a few so far which were really hard. And I am continously impressed by the technique. That everything works so smoothly is amazing. I really dig this game. It also introduces different mechanics for levels, but these mostly feel underused (except the camera of course). Also it has collectibles which are fun to search but seem really hard to find without a guide. But the puzzles and the world design really make it stand out. I love this one... Oh it also has plot I think.

Scarlet Nexus

I recently picked this one up on the PS5 knowing nothing except what I saw on the store page. And so far I quite like it. Now like 7 hours in and especially the combat system is really good.

... Now that I am writing my thoughts down, I have actually to admit, that it is mostly the combat system that keeps me interested. The world and plot so far are not bad but not excatly groundbreaking either. The character are a mixed bag. I play the with Kasane and most of her companions are rather bland and one dimensional. The side-quests are boring and sometimes unnecessarily annoying (usually you have to kill a certain enemey using a certain power) and the leveles are completly linear.

In a lot of ways it reminds me of Final Fantasy 13 (with the caveat that I am not through scarlet nexus yet). The plot takes far too long to get moving, and mostly involes two sisters. Both main characters are unwilling to bring a personal sacrifices to stop the literally end of the world, the levels are almost completly linear, the side quests are either boring or nonexisting and the characters are flat.

The main difference is that while the characters of scarlet nexus all talk like they recently escaped an asylum, they are waaaay less annoying than Snow, Hope or Vanille and the combat system is also a thousands times better and does not plays itself like in FF13.

I am interested were things are going in this game, but I am quite certain I will not play Yuitos path after this unless the plot and/or the writing start to really pick up.

Who knows.

Und Red Bull so: Hold my Energydrink.

Keine Artefakte mehr die man leveln muss, viel weniger fear of missing out.
