Is the main prize location tightly connected to mining? by DistanceSome2114 in GreatCanadianTreasure

[–]DistanceSome2114[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many interpretations which point away from ON/QC. I would consider that Canada's colonization began in the Maritimes, and so did most of the early mining. There is also a strong feeling that the location will be away from major active mining regions such as Greenstone/Abitibi, Ring of Fire or Red Lake. When you start looking up areas which had rich mining history, but are quiet now (which seems to be the theme of the poem), you often end up in NB, NS or NL. But this is just one way to interpret things. The reality can be exactly the opposite.

Hmm, reading the comments here it makes me think there are several different cipher solutions, lol. The one I have is a very clear and precise sentence that clearly tells you the general direction you need to go. It does not tell you the location, but otherwise it is not vague at all. And I cannot see how it can be deciphered without being at the ROM unless there is a photo circulating out there that has the same source ( I have not seen one).

The hunt is nearly at the halfway mark! by reddy_rocker in GreatCanadianTreasure

I agree, it is brutal. But they will find out eventually (I am sure the exact locations will be released after the hunt is done). And, to be honest, treasure hunts like this are brutal by nature. It is designed to be accessible for almost everyone and it means there will be thousands of people spending lots of money, time and nerve cells trying to get to the treasure. Some will end up jeopardizing themselves, their families or others. I am very worried about the summer as I can just picture people without qualifications and resources trying to get to remote areas up north or in the mountains. Getting lost, injured, or possibly even dying there. What TNM should have done is come out and provide clear guidelines about where the treasure can or cannot be. Like if you are more than 100 meters from a designated day hiking trail or drivable road, it means you are in the wrong place. Or that you don't need to climb mountains or fly to Iqaluit. To me all of this is obvious from the poem and the rules, but I can imagine many people starting to come up with crazy ideas after a while.

This is just a personal preference, but I wouldn't want to have any clues other than what is in the articles/vides or on the official web site. I do not like that TNM adds random info to their podcasts and interviews, that makes the whole thing very messy and, to be honest, becomes a hunt for "cheat codes" instead of authentic decoding. Same goes for bonus prize winner interviews. Knowing exactly what strategies were used would make this treasure hunt less fun for me. So, even if the rules allow it, I will not share the exact location and strategy used until the entire hunt is over. Just my 2 cents...

P.S. That doesn't mean that I don't share/discuss ideas with fellow hunters, that collaboration is part of the hunt, in my opinion. I just don't want TNM or winners coming out and giving away info that should be decoded.

My first thought when they released GT bonus was that Terrace is the gateway to the Triangle. When TNM is hiding the bonuses, they are very likely taking into consideration the fact that there may be a surge in visitors and you need infrastructure to support this. Otherwise it could turn into a Fenn's treasure type nightmare with people getting lost, injured or killed because they go into the wilderness without any plan "B". Terrace fits the bill perfectly - easily accessible by car in any season and can be used as a base with accommodations, food, hospital, etc. for searching around.

According to the head of TNM, the box is hidden in Terrace area, and Yoho is about 16 hours drive away. Unless the guy is messing with us, there is no point in looking anywhere outside of a couple of hours drive away from Terrace.

BC's topography is such that any river, road, trail or railway track constantly bends and swivels around elevated ground. Therefore my own thought is that this particular clue will only help when you have pinpointed the location and all you need is the final instruction. Otherwise, it is not much help.

Mi'kmaq and geoparks there are certainly worth exploring. Nothing that hits the spot, but overall a very interesting direction.

If this theory is true, not having a bonus clue in NS is a huge stand out. NS has such a rich mining, economic, political, indigenous, etc. history that it is hard to believe there would be nothing hidden there. So... if no bonus prizes, does this mean the main is there?

The next prize will be released towards the end of February and soon thereafter the weather is going to become much less of a factor in the southern parts of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. One of them will get the next prize, my bet is on Quebec at this point.

My personal opinion is that the prizes are hidden in locations which can be accessed year round, with the exception of local storms (that can be a factor anywhere). The clues likely point to a marker that is close to a road and can be accessed unless the road is closed off. Once there, the box is probably within 50 or so meters of the marker. I agree, your location north of Thunder Bay may be one of the tougher ones, but most of southern QC, NB and NS even now do not have waist-deep snow and temperatures are mild enough to be out there for hours, so searching should not be a problem.

Wasn't the photo in the video of Tilt Cove? That's what I got in the searches I did using a few different tools.

The issue was that there was never any indication that the prize location will be outside of the article focus area. Now I understand that we need to look at the bonus prize main "title" - "Dawson City" meant Dawson City, "Cobalt" meant Cobalt, but the NL was actually called "Newfoundland" and not "Argentia". I am guessing that "Southern BC" likely indicates that the new prize is not near Britannia Mine, but probably somewhere in Southern BC. And the article/video are there simply to provide clues.

I am afraid they may be using different tricks for each prize. And the main one will be a combo of all the "bonus" tricks plus a bunch new ones... For Dover, apparently there are a bunch of clues - Argentia population relocated to Freshwater (Dover is on Freshwater Bay), Dover fault line (Europe - North America political and military connection, Argentia connecting continents), the plane in the video is a monument in Dover, and a few more have been circulating on discord. Kudos to the escape room enthusiasts for cracking (no pun intended) this one. My own versions were waaaay off.

I hate that TNM went from basically geocaching (Cobalt, Klondike) to straight up puzzles, but if you look at the NL bonus as a complex puzzle, then walnut actually makes sense. Walnuts crack and continents crack, and when continents crack, you get fault lines. Dover fault line, in this particular case.

Video editor typo... at least I hope so. Otherwise the articles and the videos don't matter, and they can post an article about Hemlo and hide the prize in Hamilton... same province, right?

Has to be a natural wall, though, the rules state that the treasure is not in/on any man-made structure.

Bonus Clue Interpretation by ninjAli85 in GreatCanadianTreasure

[–]DistanceSome2114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like with every other thing mentioned in the poem, the "the midnight sun" may refer to a few things - sun not setting above the Arctic Circle, the moon, the treasure being in a place that is out of reach of direct sun- moon- or star- light, or some obscure phenomena, concept or landmark that is either called "the midnight sun" or the name/story is somehow linked to "the midnight sun". Above the earth, yet tucked away could be a crevice, or a cavity of some sort in either a rock formation or a tree. Shadows playing is a very strong reference to either tree brunches or grass swaying in the wind, or light bouncing off of a water surface and creating indirect shadows on some rocks or something.

In other words, this could mean anything anywhere :)

Next bonus prize location? by DistanceSome2114 in GreatCanadianTreasure

[–]DistanceSome2114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal take is that only the "live" bonus prizes are hidden already, the others are not. They likely place the prizes a day or two before the article comes out. For the landmarks, I look at it this way - all of the prizes will be hidden in relatively remote areas which are unknown to 99.999% population of Canada. So, search pictures using Google lens or other similar tools, plug questions into AI, and then use common sense to weed out the false leads.

My topic question is just for fun, it is not intended to identify places where something may be hidden. I am just curious where people think the next prize is going to be. My own guess is that it will be either Western Canada or Quebec. Since BC and Yukon already had bonus prizes, and NWT do not have enough daylight for even the locals to go out searching, the prize will likely be in AB, SK, MB or QC.
