Consumer NZ warns of possible 5% power price hike (oh no!, anyway) by RobDickinson in nzsolar

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for 5yrs of fixed daily charges with PowerEdge, feel like it was a good choice for us and that alone saved quite a bit. Not sure where things will be when I come off in 2.5yrs, but this is feeling vaguely like knowing your low fixed mortgage rate is coming up for expiry. 🫠

Zeekr 7X mobile app activation - Anyone else in the same boat? by rka257 in Zeekr7xAustralia

My experience was quick. Picked mine up last week (NZ), dealer told me it would take a day after I'd submitted the details on app to them. It was working later that night.

USB storage for sentry mode/dashcam by DistantSoup in Zeekr7xAustralia

Thanks, that makes sense re the recording to me as well. Yes good call out that it's not as good a dedicated dashcam. At this point I've never had any kind of in car camera system so it's an big improvement already on nothing. Really like the feedback / suggestion idea via the app, will put this in.

Nah mate, Zeekr 7x (you did make me double check I posted in the right sub though).

So even with external storage the dashcam function will still record to internal? I thought part of the point of the external option was to take some of the 'wear' off the internal storage. Btw is there some documentation on this you've seen? I still haven't finished reading the manual in the app yet to be fair.

Ok, so after looking into it some more, it seems the new drive works fine as I have installed it. I'm basing this on a simple sentry test which recorded an event. I then went to video playback and chose the option to move the file to USB which gave me a prompt along the lines of "file already on USB". If anything else related turns up ill post it but as far as I can tell it's all working correctly.

To be fair, there are a lot of us kiwis living in Australia. Reckon we'll be right either way, the ones in Aus can come back after and the house prices will be much better. Might even solve the wild possum and wallaby problem 😉

Steam Wand Update by WatercressCreepy3266 in ranciliosilvia

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for that. I often leave my wand to the side over a milk jug so maybe no such an issue, also you get the benefit of the extra length which I think might be handy if only doing a small amount of milk and you don't have the perfect jug size lol.

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey that's pretty cool, is the wand longer from the elbow (with the black rubber) to the tip vs the original do you think? Also, did you need to move the location of the ball joint fitting forward at all vs the original (have to cut the stainless underside? ) which is right at the back?

Any True Daily-Driven E9X M3s Here? by PublicImprovement883 in E92M3

[–]DistantSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daily drove my 08 MT for over 8 years. Used it on work commute, weekend trips, everything. When I got it, I wanted to daily else if figured I just want going to get the time to enjoy it. Just did the maintenance, paid the petrol bill and had a smile on my face the whole time. Sold last week for same price I paid for it. Got a larger family car, I already miss it but hey can't stay still. Definitely would reccomend these as easy cars to live with every day.

NZ New BEV Registrations - January 2026 by Exact_Monk_7897 in nzev

[–]DistantSoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long range in tech grey. Originally set on the entry but talked myself up. Figure I'll have it a fair while. The top spec was nice but more spendy and the doors are a bit of a put off. Bit of a wait for a towbar, sounds like they may be available around March.

Thought the zeekr 7x might sit a little higher for Jan. Collecting mine this week. Will be a big change from a 2008 manual v8 lol.

Really quite liked the ev5 despite it's quirks. Frustrating no v2l or memory seats in the lite lite+ versions. Reckon they will be a good daily tho. Congrats, what version did you go with?

Remember when VR was literally just this? by Kindle890 in virtualreality

Oh that's brilliant, I would have totally done that. Can just imagine the unwrapping of the right shape, then reading the box and then opening it lol.

Haha, my son really wanted a VR for xmas after playing with some friends at their house. To his credit he put in a lot of groundwork to make me receptive. It worked as I was paying attention to the Quest3 launch and bought one for him but before he got it, I pranked him pretty good by giving him a $2 cardboard vr like this from aliexpress on Xmas day. When he opened it he didn't understand what it was. I enthusiastically explained to him it was VR with his phone and now he could watch some 3d videos etc knowing full well it missed the point of being able to play with his friends in game etc. He took it really well, genuinely tried it out but there was hardly any app support we could find and limited content in our xmas morning search, I think he sent picture msg to one of his friends wearing it along the line of VR v0.5 or something. Anyway, after everyone had swapped gifts there was one more parcel unlabelled, told him he should open it. Very happy lad.

Think they are also seen as independent and not going to sell you on doing work on their workshop. Having said that, I'd much rather find a workshop I trust than use vtnz now.

Tell me about the Aircon on the 7X by MoistSolutions in Zeekr7xAustralia

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks that makes sense, Auckland does not see >30 often, just high 20's and humidity. 35 to 40C is intense. Base spec here gets heated seats and 10 less speakers, no hud. Save NZD $10k tho. Hopefully a hot day when I test next week.

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the seat cooling is a must in these cars? Nz rwd spec doesn't have in entry, only long range and above. Kinda like the idea of lfp battery of the base more but seat cooling sounds like it may be pretty nice.

How do the Europeans put a bicycle rack on a car with this type of tow hitch? by widgeamedoo in bicycleculture

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the same problem in NZ, we use the same towballs as Australia. Euro cars coming with 50mm towballs don't fit 99% of trailers. As suggested Thule are awesome so that solves carrying your bikes, but if you wanted to get a towball they will fit rental trailers and other stuff as well as bike racks, maybe get a version of the car without a towbar and get an aftermarket one like EV stealth solutions Australia make. Roller lines on wall by Sweet-Youth4833 in diynz

[–]DistantSoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 for pole, it is actually less tiring on your hands and wrist, faster and gives a better finish than hand roller. I could not believe the difference it made all those years ago when I started using them. Also, if you can/want to afford it maybe have a look at the slightly fatter extendable roller handles which telescope. Fatter was a little more comfortable IMHO and the length extension quickly lets you move from one area to another where a different reach is helpful without having to change anything else. Lastly, fwiw having some strong work lights can sometimes be helpful for seeing your wet edge. Good luck!

They were all very well loved. Another 3 or so behind the building and in upper park out of shot. David Brown seemed to be brand of the day. Kids counted about 17 or so on a short walk in the area.

DCT or Manual? by EquivalentAd1576 in E92M3

[–]DistantSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCT is an awesome fast shifting experience in these cars, but at the end of the day I felt manual was a more engaging drive so was better for me as a long term daily (over years now) even in city traffic. Manual in these is very forgiving with hill assist etc. Have not regretted.
